first off, just want to make it clear i'm not singling you out, but i've a problem with the mind sets regarding "too many of one subject"

If you worked for a magazine and needed a photo of a cat in a window and had to look at 45 photos ALL of a cat in a window, would you select the best one? or just shuffle 'em and pick one from the pile with your eyes covered?

i spent all day yesterday, the first chance i had to devote to the stop action challenge and i do mean ALL day, shooting my water photo -- it was the best way i knew to show stop motion with my camera and knew i could do it better than capturing a skateboarder or a friend/relative jumping or flipping or doing cartwheels or birds flying or my dog jumping or the horses running... I spent lots of time rearranging lighting, futzing with the settings, with the flash -- So thank you very much for stopping -- i sure as heck wouldn't want a low mark just because you are tired of the subject matter

I think the photographers who submit photos to these challenges, regardless whether it's the first of a same themed subject or the 100th, deserve the same THOUGHTFUL consideration as all the others.

...now i'm done ranting ;o)

I agree. This is just like the red challenge where many were critical of the number of flower pictures. Each photo needs to be judged on it's own merit and not on the fact that there were duplications of the same idea. These people have no idea they are not the only ones who thought up an idea until the voting starts. Give these folks a break.

even though there are a lot of water photos, there are a lot of techniacally awesome ones, some the I can't believe could be possible. I think it's great to see such variation on the water theme

Like a lot of others in this challenge this is the first time I have attempted to shoot moving lquid which I found extremely difficult in selecting a suitable subject/idea that would attract interest - sorry if 'liquid' shots bore the backside off you but hopefully others will vote with regard to each individual image and the work they have put in to acheive a suitable submission. I certainly have not seen or done it all before, but then again I've only been 'at it' for 40 years.

I have to agree with this viewpoint. I will continue to judge pictures on their own merit, and not care if I have already seen a dozen with the same subject. Its not as though the pictures themselves are identical.

It seems that the nature of a limiting assignment like this will make for a number of entries of the same subject. The point must still be to make an interesting image.

What bothers me more than multiple shots of the same thing is the number of shots that seem to only be going for stopping motion, completely disregarding the idea of making a compelling image. Does it really matter if you stopped action; if the image isn't interesting or appealing no one will look at it.

And I don't know why you would single me out. I thought I was clear in my post: I did not let the number of water photos affect my judgment of them, I even went out of the way to make sure of that. I held off on voting until I had a clear mind.

I do not think there are too many water photos, I just realized that I do get tired of them, so I needed a break before passing judgment on all of them.

Although I am not disappointed with the number of water photos, I don't agree with this statement. I didn't do a water photo simply because I knew there would be lots of water photos. If something comes to your mind as an idea for a challenge, and it comes rather quickly and easily, you can be almost certain you will not be the only one to do it.

Ok now that I have gone through most of the images... allow me to append to my previous post... even though I shot some H2O, I realized that if the image is not an exciting image and if it does really say anything to you other than "look I stopped the water, fan, whatever" then there is a good chance that its a boring photo. Although I still had fun shooting my stupid water photo.

OK lets accept your count. Of the 26 how many of the water shots added 2 cents worth of food coloring to make it a bit more interesting and therefore more creative? The creative process simply involves looking at the same old thing in a new way. There are not many things on the face of the earth that have not be photographed to death but the challenge is to see in a new way-to stretch the obvious. The curved road was a wonderful shot but seemed rather obvious to me. In this challenge the endless people in street clothes walking jumping and falling seem cliche (like the water drops) but the indian dancer while not moving higher or faster is interesting because it is not just another friend or family member jumping on command.

To tell you the truth I really don’t care how many photos of water there are,.. I’m proud of my image and would be just fine im last place, as long as I was challenged and excited about my photography... which I was and usually strive to be... Ok im done ranting..

I am sure your image is fine. But to solve the challenge when 25% of the people have the same idea and turn in essentialy the same photo it simply shows that there might be more creative solutions.

It is unfortunate that everyone doesn't share the same views on creativity. I really would have preferred to see Rembrandt, Da Vinci, an Michaelangelo all do the Mona Lisa.

I agree with one thing you say here. There ARE a lot of 'liquid' photos in this challenge. What I fear is that you may be letting that fact get in the way of your views of each INDIVIDUAL photo. Maybe you should just vote all liquid oriented photos with a 1 and not give them merit as individual photos. I have seen several liquid oriented photos here that are excellent shots and excellent displays of stopped motion.

exactly jmsetzler...

I can't believe that in a creative forum anybody would criticize another artist for his choice of subject matter.

That is the height of arrogance.

If you don't like the presentation, fine. Even if you are bored with the subject matter..your privelage.

I just discovered this site as I am new to digital photography but I have been an amateur film photographer for 23 years and the first two lessons I learned 23 years ago is there is no boring subject, only boring ways of looking at a subject. If a person lets the subject matter cloud his vision as an artist maybe he needs to question his vision and not the artists.

Let your minds focus on the task not the photo subject all the time. I believe there was excellent stop motion shots. Way to go everyone. I can not wait to view the next set. Remember HAVING FUN is the reason the site was created in the first place... that's my belief!!!!
