Ok, I am getting ready for a trip to Wyoming. I plan to fly. I am using my camera rolling bag as my carry on... what do I do with my tripod? Can I strap it on the backpack and carry it on too. I took the Kirk ballhead off and put it in the camera bag. I am worried about the tripod getting lost if my luggage gets lost. I would much rather wear the same clothes all week than lose my tripod and the ability to take photos while I am out there. You seasoned travelers.... what should I do?

I doubt u will be allowed to carry a tripod on a US based or bound flight.

I've flown with my tripod and thhe carrying case makes it easy. Normally, airlines just turn the blind eye and not give you too much slack on such an item. I've hand carried them too. It's CF and I would just die if it gets dinged or even worse, lost!

You shouldn't have an issue with the tripod. I glanced over the TSA website, and though I didn't see mention of a tripod either way, they do allow umbrellas. There isn't that much difference between the two in size and such. I would figure an umbrella could be used as a weapon easier than a tripod could.

with the current security procedures it's a crapshoot. On a recent trip I carried a little monopod in my camera bag and on two first legs it was no problem, and on the third one they forced me to check it in they said it can be used as a weapon (what can't be used as a weapon nowadays?). So be prepared for that.

I flew Frontier through Denver less than a month ago. Nobody even asked about my tripod. I hand carried my camerabag and tripod, checked the rest. You should have no problem.

Just a note. I had no case to carry it in and it's a full size Bogen Manfrotto 3001. LOL. No questions.

I just returned from Europe, was traveling with freinds. Both my buddy and I carried our tripods. I got through security with mine my buddy went to a different x-ray machine and was told he had to check his. This is not up to the airlines but fedral security screening personal.

i carried mine on when i flew to the dc notacon. i didn't have a fancy tripod case, so i bought one of those cheapy camp folding chairs at target and then just used the case for that. it had a shoulder strap and everything, and i just sent it right through the xray machine. no problem!

a few years back i had trouble just trying to bring one of those tiny ones on ...they actually made me check it. I am talking about the ones that weigh less than a lb and telescope out.

My tripod is 17cm, or 27/4" tall. I carry it in my pocket. :)

I went ahead and packed the tripod. If I did have trouble I don't have a case to put it in and we live so far in the country I don't have time before we leave to get a chair case for it but that does sound like a good idea. I sure hope they don't lose my luggage!
