Browsing true the results of the Color Portrait Challenge I stumbled opun the #9 placed photo.

Did anybody notice that it was shot with Rebel Kit Lens?
Everybody is always complaining about that lens, but in the hands of a capable photographer it still work very well.

Speaking about the Photographer, NightShy is only 17 years old. I see a new star in the rising.

Are we loosing it to these youngsters ;)

What conclusions about any particular lens could you possibly draw from this image?

That you still can get a top 10 finish.
That it's not that bad as a give-away...
Something like that John?
That you don't need only "L" glass to score on DPC.

It's common (and inaccurate) "wisdom" on this site that the Canon kit lens is soft and useless. Shy's image shows that it's capable of resolving fine, crisp detail. You know it's capable of that, I know it's capable of that, Shy certainly knows it, but a lot of people use this received "wisdom" as a crutch to explain away their failures. "If only I'd had a better lens than that crappy kit lens..."

A good photo is never or rarely determined by the gear that shot it. However, you can't look at a digital photograph on here and determine how good/bad the lens was either.

True,

I have it myself, and almost never use it, but this is a pretty decent score...

@Bear: I agree 100%

Philos, as Sjon said if you look at the outtake in NightShy's portfolio you can see that this version is so heavily edited that most of the information in the image is from processing rather than what the lens brought to the sensor. Like I said in my comments, it's completely unhuman and I think it's cool...with credit to the processing, not the photograph.

The current blue ribbon in Perspective was taken with the same lens.

At 640 pix, 72dpi it's really tough to tell how a lens performs.

And the blue for rain:

I am well happy with my kit lens.

Bit harsh dood! in the context of the challenge I felt it was appropriate.
