On Saturday, October 8, 2005, we'll be meeting to photograph the beautiful fall foliage that surrounds Ithaca, NY. We'll plan for a sunrise meeting and then spend the day exploring the hills, lakes, and gorges in and around town. I hope that we can get a good group together for this, as it should be a fun day. If you can't make it in the morning, we can always arrange to meet up along the way. In case of bad weather, we'll set Sunday, October 9, as the rain date - but only if it's really pouring (or snowing - yikes!) as light precipitation can often enhance the foliage colors.

So, if you're interested in joining us, please post here so we can get a good idea of how many can make it. Hope to see you there!

***Updated Attendance***
Here's what I have so far for attendance. Please let me know if any of this is wrong or if I've missed anyone:

Saturday, Oct. 8th
CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN

Sunday, Oct. 16th

[Non-DPC]: Tom?, MaggieH?, GaryP?, PaulW?

Anyone else?

If there is a group of people will get together I may want to drive up. It seems like 3-4 hrs drive from NYC.

Also, there is another GTG for Oct 8 I think. So I'll probably attend the one that is closer. I'll keep an eye on this tread and will let you know close to the day.

I'll have to check with our family calendar, but I'm interested.

I'll see if I can. I'm from Canandaigua (near Roch.) so I'll check on some stuff and get back to you.

Sorry I've been slow to reply. I've been out of town.

We've probably got about 6 people so far (including a few not on DPC). Anyone who can make it is welcome.

We'll be meeting at 7:00 AM at Stewart Park at the South end of Cayuga Lake (again, the date is Oct. 8). If anyone needs directions, feel free to PM me.

I'm not sure if I'll make it now or not (see FLP forum). I'm thinking about going to Maine instead.

You can go to Maine if you like...
...but only if you take the rest of us with you!

I hope you can make it. Heck, you're just down the road, after all!

Well, I hope you don't bail on us, but I couldn't blame you. It's a great time of year for Maine.

1 Week to Go!
I am soooooo looking forward to this GTG!
Frosty nights are proving helpful in turning the leaves--it may not be "peak" yet on the 8th, but I'm sure there'll be color in that beautiful valley.
Who else is in?

Well, at least you'll probably be here when the foliage hits peak!
How long will you be around?
Will your schedule have any room in it to meet up if any of us have some spare time?

Well I live here, so if anyone wants to get together any other time, let me know! More than likely I'll be around.

15-20th. My Girlfriend will be in a seminar during the day all week. So I'll be roaming the countryside shooting in the mornings.

I should be free over the weekend anyway. Anyone else want to meet up then?

For anyone interested in joining us the the Oct. 8 GTG in Stewart Park at 7:00 am, here's a map of where we'll be meeting.

If you are coming in on Rt. 13 Southbound, the exit drops you off right at the entrance to the park. If you are coming in Northbound, turn left onto Rt. 34 and then turn left again as if getting back onto Rt. 13 South. This will bring you to the park entrance.

Once in the park, turn right and then loop around the lake front to the end of the parking area. We'll plan to meet there.

I know for sure that I'll be shooting that waterfall one day...

Still looking in to it.

I also need recommendations for nearby hotels, as I will come the night before.

Anyone else thinking about driving in from the Eastern NY area?

It should be about a 3 hour drive from the Albany area. There's a Ramada Inn nearbly that is reasonable, a Marriott Courtyard that's a bit pricey, and a bunch of lower end motels -- not sure what you're looking to spend. I will tell you, though, that it's hard to get hotel rooms in and around Ithaca during October weekends. Between Cornell and Ithaca College homecomings and other events, they book up pretty fast. You might be better off finding something outside of town like Cortland or Binghamton. Send me a PM if you want me to look into anything for you.

I googled and found that Cortland was a shorter drive both from albany and then to Ithaca than going through Binghampton.

Found the Hampton, Inn in Cortland. In a decent area, and not a shack I presume. I'm going to book a reservation, though I'm still not definite in coming (says it can be cancelled).

That's a good choice. Plus, it's right off Rte. 13 which takes you right to Stewart Park. If you do make it, give yourself about 1/2 hour to get into town.

Yes. Cortland is more convenient all around. Only 30 minutes from Ithaca (versus 60 from Binghamton).
The Hampton Inn should be fine--it's relatively new. There is also a Holiday Inn and a Days Inn at the same exit off Route 81.
Nightlife, however, is far, far superior in Ithaca! Unfortunately, a quick check of hotels indicates little availability in Ithaca (if any).
