Hi Tracy
Canon 5d is selling for £2,500 and the 350d for about £600 in the U.K.

Guess that answers your question!?

Mike

Keep an eye on //www.luminous-landscape.com - his main page has a pre-production 5D photo on it, and there should be an in-field review of his use of it soon if not already.

There are some samples out from the 5D, some on the Canon Japan site and some elsewhere. Almost all of them are with the new 24-105 f/4L lens. Many of them don't really showcase the capabilities of the camera. Here is a link to the Canon samples. The macro sample really showcases what the sensor is capable of as far as resolution.

if you dont know much about the 5d you should probably get the rebel unless you really have money to throw around. thats a way more expensive camera.

Sounds like you have a lot of money available for your hobby. Post the amount that you are looking to spend and we can give you some suggestions.

Many people view the body as rather secondary in importance because most people need to spend at least a couple grand US on a nice set of lenses before they really decide on going to such a high end body.

People will usually look a little funny at you if you are shooting a 1dMkII with a Sigma 70-300.

In light of that, if you have 3500 dollars to spend and want to upgrade to a DSLR, might I suggest something similar to what petrakka said and pick up a 350XT or 20D and grab a 70-200L and maybe a 1.4x teleconverter and a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and maybe a couple of decent primes and a flash/tripod combo.

That costs around the same as a 5D plus a cheap starter lens and it just makes SO much more sense.

If you shoot with that combo for a year, or even six months, you will easily be able to get a fair bit of your money back out of your body and you will be able to upgrade to a 5D or 1D mk II or whatever high end body suits your purposes then.

On the other hand, if you are one of the lucky kind of people who has at least 10 grand in the house at any given day and could spend it on shoelaces for a lark without blinking, then by all means, go for the 5d and grab yourself three or four L lenses and make us all look bad. :)

I just can't fathom why someone would be choosing between 350D and a 5D!?

They're just such different cameras in a hugely different position in the market!?

a) If you need top resolution and top quality with extreme wide angle options and can justify the huge spend then go for the 5D
b) If you just want a nice, inexpensive, well-performing digital SLR then go for the 350D

If you're at the upper end of the market then the question should be 5D or 1D MkIIN? Even 20D or 5D is a pretty strange question?

It's like saying "shall I go for a BMW or an Aston Martin?"...it totally depends on how much you want to spend!

I was trying to decide between a powershot a400 or a 1DS mk-2 myself.

but seriously, the 20D would make a lot more sense if you're just looking for a better camera than the xt. personally, I would get the xt or the 20d, and some nice L glass. The camera bodies depreciate really fast, but if you take care of your leses, they pretty much never go down in value.

Deciding between the Canon 5D and the 350XT is like trying to decide if you should buy a BMW or a Honda Civic.

If you have to ask the question, chances are you should buy the 350XT and the 5D shouldn't even be on your radar.
