As DPChallenge continues to grow, so do the number of weekly challenge entries. Open challenges routinely draw 400 or more entries a week, and many have reported that they find it difficult to vote and to comment meaningfully on that many entries.

We believe that the existence of a weekly free challenge is beneficial to DPChallenge and the community as a whole. As such, we feel it is important to keep the Open challenge useful and relevant to all users. To help do this, we are looking at ways we can meet the seemingly conflicting goals of keeping the challenges manageable in size, while still keeping them open to all who wish to participate. For the remainder of the month, we will be experimenting with one of those options.

Through the end of September, we will be running two Open Challenges per week; however, you will only be able to enter one of those challenges each week. You may choose which challenge you prefer. This experiment only affects the Open Challenges. Members may enter any and all Member challenges available.

Please note that this is only an experiment, and one of many options we could ultimately use to control the Open challenge sizes. As always, we welcome your feedback on this experiment, and we especially welcome your constructive suggestions for improvement.

I like it! Nice direction for an answer to this dilema. And a choice to boot.... :)

I really like this idea....seems like a fair way to do it without losing the original DPChallenge feel.

I honestly think this is a wonderful experiment, and I truly think it'll do well.

Do you vote on the one you're in, the one you're not in, or can you vote in both?
09/13/2005 11:49:11 PM · #6
Here here! This is what I would have suggested, myself. It's good and fair, and remains true to the purpose of the Challenges.

You should be able to vote in both since you dont have to enter a challenge to vote in it.

Sounds like a great idea! Count me in.

At least for the experiment, you may vote in either or both challenges.

Yes, if you wish to vote in both, that is fine.

Edit:
Damn, too slow!

This seems like a great idea!!! As a relative newcomer, I am finding the open challenge voting o be a bit difficult.

I hope the experiment is a success.

I love how you guys continue to keep this place a great place to be. I hope this works, sounds like a good solution to the problem.

simple. I am on board.

Cool beans!

I like the idea. You will probably have to have two similar challenges to keep most from entering the same one.
09/13/2005 11:59:06 PM · #22
Two topics and only being able to enter one is a great idea. It would also be beneficial to look at the two topics coming up and try to make sure they would have equal levels of appeal, or try to anyway. It would help balance the number of entrants in those two challenges.

Sounds like an awesome experiment. Kudos to you D&L. Not only may it help to keep volume of entries manageable, but gives us choices! Yay. I know sometimes I just can't get motivated in the available given challenges, but then again, hehehe, now if all of them give me inspiration...I will have a busy week and a tough choice !!! :-P
Seriously, great job guys, this sounds great.

In that amount of time we should be able to tell whether the experiment is meeting the need, accepted by the community, and generally making DPChallenge a better place to be. It's possible that we'll be perfectly happy with the results and continue forever with the experiment format. It's also possible that we'll find it's not working and all and pursue other options entirely... or we may find the idea largely worked, but that with some changes it could be even better.
