Sculpture Portrait

Find a piece of physical public art and photograph it as if it were a human. Take its portrait. Tell us about it with your lens.

I know it's just a brainstorm, but I'd be worried about the "Sculpture portrait" one, that more emphasis would be placed on the original work of art than on the photograph of it. I believe sometimes things are disqualified (or at least difficult to score) if the photo can only be judged on the basis of the subject, and the subject is someone else's artwork. Just a thought. :)

I must admit, sculpture portraits are an especial obsession of mine, particularly ones of people. You move around it, you find a way to look up at it, as if it were a human just sitting there (only in bronze or marble or plaster), and wham, powerful portrait image. There's a lot of 'good sculptures' out there, and a lot of 'bad sculptures' with good facial expressions.

How about -

Topic: Repetition

Description - Take a photograph of objects or patterns that repeat themselves that provide a provocative or unusual visual effect

This might lend itself to be similar to the rhythm challenge, but totally different

Another shout for the 'Abstract' challenge here : )

Flight: Photograph something not in contact with the ground.

In Water: Photograph something on or in water. Prolly needs a better title

Anything else that involves going outside because I'm stuck with two studio ideas this week and the weather is beautiful!

How about:

-Juxtapose

Put the subject in an environment it wouldn't naturally be in.

This thread is full of great ideas. I hope a lot of them are used. They sound like fun!

Some other suggestions:

Humanimal: Take a photo of an animal & a photo of a human and morph them together. (Obviously this one would have to go under the editable challenges.)

Opposites Attract: Photograph two items that are the exact opposite of each other, but make them relate within the photograph. (hard & soft, light & dark, old & new, etc.)

Sticky: Photograph something sticky. (tape, honey, velcro, etc.)

Old-Age without Elders: This challenge would be like the Childhood without Children challenge.

I'll post more as I think of them.

Ode to the Pros : Shoot a photo in the style of one of the classic professionals, use the artists name as part of the title...

Food: present and shoot food in a way that you might see it on a menu or in a magazine.

The Nude: shoot a photo of a person's body catch... make the person appear to be nude, but don't actually show anything (you know what I mean!)

In the Bathroom: Use your or a bathroom as the subject or the backdrop for this photo.

All but one color: Shoot something and use the desaturation trick to get rid of all but one color

Ok... those are my ideas for now... let me know what you think! Thanks :-)

LOL! I need to go practice that innocent look some more, it's not working like it used to.

Challenge suggestion:
Innocence: Take a photograph representing innocence - and be creative doing it!

I hope this is not taken wrong. I am not trying to be disrespectful or exploitave, but

I think a fun challenge would be something like
"A Play on Words" : In this challenge you would photograph something with something else that has the same name. For an example see Redfig's "Am I Nuts" photo below.
//www.dpcprints.com/print.php?IMAGE_ID=10477

Also, I think a fun challenge would be
Compound Words: Take a picture of multiple elements whose combination would make a compound word. And have the Compound word be your title. For example: Butterfly is a compound word. So you could photography a fly sitting on a stick of butter. Or for instance: Cardboard: you could photograph an Ace of Spades nailed to a piece of wood.

Understand? Or did I thoroughly confuse everyone?

Rites of Passage -- Each culture/society has its own benchmarks that signify going from one "age" to the next. Creatively capture a "rite of passage" important to your culture or area.

I just saw these today, what about surrational images. Would have to be a challenge though with editing premitted though. The photographer that I saw some of his works today was Scott Mutter. It would be a definate challenge to see how creative we really are...

How about a "no studio" and a "studio only" challenge.
Descriptions: Anything not taken in a studio setting.
Anything taken in studio setting.

This will encourage those of us stuck in one mode to try the other.

BTW--lots of great suggestions.

Im all for having some more open challenges... Its hard when you work full time and have other responsiblilties to fit in trying to find the right shot for the right topic within a week, having said that I do like seeing a new challenge each week!!

Let's have a "Take Your Worst Shot" challenge... The better the photo is, the lower you score it...

Some of these ideas are great - particularly love 'Take Your Worst Shot' (lol) and 'Compound Words'. There were some other fantastic ideas, but of course these were two I read very recently before posting this... ;)

How about:

Temptation - we face temptation every day. Try to capture this creatively!

or perhaps:

Religion - simply, shoot your interpretation of the word 'religion'.

Quote from jmsetzler 05/30/2003 07:52:32 PM: I agree with Tim. Why have a challenge where the images can't be as good as possible? Digital photography is all about post processing. I have heard the argument over and over again about how this would 'teach people how to get the most out of their camera.' I don't buy it.

A bit of a flip flop there John or were you just being sarcastic?
