Hey all,

As you may know, one of the things we'd like to do in the near future is run some additional challenges. One idea that we had talked about a while ago was running an additional unlimited editing challenge once per month.

The problem is, we're short on usable challenge topics. This is where you come in. If you have an idea, please post it here. If you have posted an idea previously and it has not been used, you are encouraged to post it again. All I ask is that you follow the guidelines below:

- Include both a challenge title and description as you would expect them to appear on the challenge details page.

- Please refrain from posting ideas that would require coding changes to the site. Ideas for things such as bracket tournaments, challenges without titles, challenges with extra text fields, etc, should not be posted here. It's not that these ideas are unwelcome, it's just that I don't want discussion of logistics to take over the thread. If you have ideas that would require a coding change, please start your own thread for them.

Thank you!

-Terry

I know it has been mentioned recently and I like the idea of self portrait for a challenge. I know that it was done before but wouldn't it be a bit different if all editing would be premitted.

Self portrait would also appeal to those who complain about the cliches cause only cliche in this would be to photograph yourself simply put!

I'm up for this. The self-portrait challenge was the first one I participated in and I have improved IMO a lot since then. I'd like to give it another go. I'm willing to bet a lot of the people who submitted to that challenge aren't even still around here, so it wouldn't be a repeat challenge for most. I'm not for the "all editing being permitted" though, ***note this is not an invitation to start that debate here***

Magazine Cover - a full one this time!

Magazine-style cover shot, possibly with composited images, with a banner title and fake article blurbs on the front (or whatever your target magazine does with its cover).

Surrealism

It's more than real - it's the surreal. Since editing is unlimited, you can go wild. Make us feel surreal.

(this might end up with some Digital Art, or just people bent and manipulated like Dali's wristwatch ...)

Challenge Title: Flower Macro

Description: This one is for all you haters who moan about cliche pictures. Now we're shoving it down your throat. Time to put your money where your mouth is. Sincerely, Management.

A note:

These ideas are not just for unlimited editing, but for regular challenges as well.

LOL I love it, but can we do it in two weeks when my roses should be in full bloom?

I said this once in another thread, but I think we should have an open challenge where all the photos are untitled.

Challenge: Name that Picture

Description: Take a picture of anything you want. The "title" field of the submittal form will accept your title, but every picture will show "untitled" during the voting process. At the end of the results week, we will post the 3 photos with the most votes for the same title. (The results will come from a special forum thread dedicated to this. If you think you have a lot, read the forums to see what the highest number is and post if you are close to or over it).

Here's a more conventional one-

Challenge: Tools

Description - Take a picture of a useful tool that predates 1980 (no cell phones, palm pilots, PC's, stuff like that)

There are my 2 ideas for the year. - Bob

Proverbs: Illustrate any phrase or saying.

Tables and Chairs: or both, or either, or any number of them.

Light: submit a photo where light is an important element.

People: at work, at rest, whatever.

... and I believe the unlimited editing challenge should be Open - why bother with limits at all? 'Submit your best image created this month/week/fortnight whatever ...'

For Posterity

Try to record something you beieve will be worth looking at in 100 years

At Rest

Subject is seated, placed, or lying stably, with a feeling of calm to the shot. No midair droplets, teetering rocks, or fast-motion-stop shots. :-> Stability has a permanence to it.

You were reading my mind, or I was reading yours. I was adding this to the database as you were typing it.

Actually, I want to second Eloise's suggestion for "Full Magazine Cover". Seriously. In the same spirit as the 'postcard' challenge. Allow any type of editing for this one.

Also, 'Outside Looking In' to reverse crabappl3's

"Take a photo looking inside of something"

'Return of Ads', mostly because I am really sorry to have missed this one, but partly because it's a topic with a wide variety of possibilities. Allow any type of editing for this one, too -- set up the whole of the ad as if it were a print ad, maybe specify "Print Ads" as the topic instead.

'The Past'

Photograph things that give a sense of times gone by. (Usual rules.)

'The Future'

Take a photo giving a glimpse of the (possible) future.
(Usual rules.)

'Old Movies'

Take a picture that could have been a still in an old (pre 1970) movie. (This one could have a different date, that's just where I'd start calling things old personally.)

'1970s'

Photograph a picture that could have come straight out of the 70s, man.

'1980s'

Like, totally show off your hip knowledge of retro 1980s.

(Both of those decades had distinctive styles and are recent enough that photographers either were there or could easily find references showing what it was like; one could also include 1960s and maybe 1920s as well, possibly the Victorian era... not necessarily all in a row, but interspersed with other stuff this could be neat.)

Strung Along

Photograph a connected sequence of similar objects - beads on a string, ducklings trailing behind their mother, cabs at a cabstand, girls in a can-can line. :->

How would you like to see this worded next to the words "Challegne Details" on the submission page?

After the no Water challenge - how about a "Water" challenge.

Could be lakes, ocean, waterfalls, kids in the sprinkler, water drops, etc. Just have the main focus of the photo be water.
