I was just curious which one is better? I didn't think this was a ribbon winner, but I thought that it would get a 6.5. I was wondering if I would have entered this re-work picture if I would have gotton the higher vote? I like the first one better myself. My skin looks muttled because I have makup on top of freckles.

hey, i like the first one better, but maybe give it a lil more contrast. i just like seeing more of your face and the other one seems a little too contrasty for me. keep it up!
Make it a great day!

Mandy,

I loved your entry in the HC challenge. I'm in a bit of a bitter mood right now (with dpc as a voting whole) so I'll keep the ranting down to a minimum. Anyway, the second picture is pretty cool; it has a very artistic feeling to it. Like something you would see on a band's album (CD for the young kids) cover.

What I really love about your self portraits Mandy is the way you capture feelings in your eyes. There is an emotional element you seem to nail in all of your work. It's something you can't teach people IMHO. You've just got the touch girl!

Anyway, and keep up the AWESOME work!

What a wonderful compliment! THANK YOU!! That means so much to me. I try to feel a certain way or get in a mood before I snap the photo, kind of like acting I guess.

I think I would like it best somewhere between the two (as far as contrast.) I personally like the crop better in the first one. I think it helps to set the mood a bit more. It's a very cool idea and nicely done.

I like the second one better, but...... try bringing back some of the nose, and getting rid of the darkness (almost looks like blemishes) on the cheek.

i personally like the 2nd one better. the lighting is so unconventional that i think it lends itself to that kind of treatment.

Well I certainly gave the first one higher than 6.5 :-) and I like it much better than the second. To me the second one doesn't capture the mood nearly as well.

I LOVE the second one.

The first one is a nice self-portrait, don't get me wrong.. but the second just has so much drama to it. I'm not a fan of high contrast in general unless it works and in that second image it does work and it bring such a different dimension to the photograph, I don't know..

You have gorgeous eyes and the lighting in the second really pics up on that because the high contrast does something unique with them and gives them a certain quality..

Aha! I know what I'm thinking of.. the image seems VERY Sin City to me, its got that stark and yet emotion-filled feel.

Um.. yeah so.. I like the second one better.

I really like the second one but I think the skin is just a bit too over exposed. The eyes look fantastic though!! It's a great photo. I'm still learning at adjustments myself, so I don't have any real specific criticism other than thinking something somewhere in the middle, but closer to the effect in the second would be where I'd aim.

I really like it. I like the first one, I like the second one, and I like the re-done one as well. Having to choose though I would have to choose the second. Speaking of second, I second the compliment you was given above about capturing emotion, and mood. Your pretty awesome at achieving that.

I agree, the first one is a good self portrait, but the second one brings out something extra to the photo. What might have been even better would be to tried what Strikeslip mentioned and leave the freckles in their full glory.
