Sorry...I am prepared to get slammed big time for this BUT...the blue IS NOT a high contrast shot. Yes, it is an excellent photograph. There is no question on that. But where is the high contrast?

The second place is also a great photo, but where is the high contrast?

High contrast is an image that exhibits a majority of lows or highs without a majority of mids while maintaining a decent exposure level.

And the blue image is mids all over and nothing else...where is the high contrast...again, please be specific!

the red is not high contrast either - in fact it is a perfect example of the opposite of high contrast, it is a beutiful blend of tonal greys.
I am extremely dissapointed with A LOT of the images placements (not mine, i knew mine sucked haha)

Bears i understand but quite frankely the brown represent high contrast to me more that the blue and red.

I have to agree. It's an excellent picture, but doesn't fit my idea of high contrast. Check the histogram. Once you crop out the white border you have a very gradual sloping from a majority dark to light...

I see plenty of contrast, thought i would call it somewhat oversharpened.

It is a contrasty picture but not HIGH contrast in my eyes also.

You folks need to calibrate your monitors or re-evaluate your definition of high contrast.

The challenge wasn't for the highest contrast image. It was for the best image that was also high contrast.

three main areas of high contrast

1. on his right ear it is pure black, right next to a sunny spot in the background that is pure white

2. highlights on his face - contrast is about 1 (almost black) against 8 (almost white)

3. beard - contrast is as high as 0/7

or... just look at the histogram... it's almost completely lows and mids. There is a small amount of peaking at the far right. About half that peak comes from the white boarder i'd imagine. Also IMO, the image looks much better with more contrast added. I'm not fighting for either side here, but I am stating the facts.

I have a Spyder and all three of my monitors are calibrated...thank you very much.

Not a biased opinion here, but I really think that some monitors need calibrating.
There is also more to contrats than JUST the amount of light/dark pixels.
Contrast can have a bazillion examples.
Contrast in height, size, social stature, value, lifestyles, etc etc etc..

Ribbons are well-deserved in my opinion.

Edit to add:

Crap - relax folks.
This is what is undermining this site and making it someplace I am slowly wanting to be less a part of more & more, as I don't feel we should have to seek a law firm to make sure we have a picture that fits, title is spelled right, is perfect in every aspect, will not offend anyone, will not be mis-construed as something else, is mathmatically computed to determine is light/dark ratios.
