I live in a rural-ish upper middle class township and while i have long not trusted my local government, I am now becoming convinced they have sold out to the highest bidder.
Across the road from me they have begun clearing land for 67 half millon dollar plus homes. (in a county where the new average home is $230k). they began about 3 weeks ago.
In that time...they have started before the allowable hour twice (i work nights so when they wake me up i know they are violating the law) and have been burning off the cleared trees and brush - and that is what has me pissed off the most!
They started by burning it in piles...2 trips by the fire department to put it out after they workers went home for the day and left it burning. So they got smart and got a burn permit from the DEP. A 1 week permit i was told by my lolcal gov't official (township manager and code enforcement officer, aka fork tounged devil/salesman)
That was last week. Last night at dark i called hte police about the fire and the fire trucks rolled yet again - an unattended fire after hours (2 violations there, 3rd time too). Today they are burning yet again - and for the second time in 2 weeks there is fly ash on my car, deck, in the air, stuck to my house....and over at my neighbors and at the local shopping center...
The fork tounged devil says there is nothing he can do if they have a DEP permit, I am to call the DEP...and there i get a sec't who assures me she'll forward the complalint to the complalint dept and they'll look into it next week. Next Week!
I have promised (threatened) "publicity action" (not legal action, but more powerful and immediate) if this continues.
So do you think big signs in my yard "Don't buy houses from the polluting criminals at ashley ridge" (which is directly across the street form their entrance BTW) might get some results?
I think it would make me fell better.

A sudden leak appearing one morning in the hydraulic fluid due to an unexplained hole in one of the hydraulic lines on a dozer or backhoe would send the message very loud about starting too early in the morning.
24 hour security is prohibitively expensive. |

Who is the builder/developer? Give them some bad press, they need to keep a better eye on their contractors.
The sign is a good idea, but if you have an HOA they will make you take it down. The city/town might as well, but it's worth a shot.
I wonder why they burn it and not mulch it?

Sudden leaks, spreding fires, and other things have crossed my mind. I used to be a teenager ya know.
a neighbor says they leave the keys in the equipment, but moving it in the dark would be noisy and potentially dangerous (to me).
I may have to call hte developer - not a bad idea there.
As to the signs - there is no HOA, and even if there was it would fall under free speech. I did the sign thing and petetions 2 years ago and stopped the sewer expansion that the fork tounged devil told us 'was wanted by the residents' - 13 of 14 said no. the 1 that said yes needed a new septic system.
If i didn't have to work i'd go the monday twp meeting and state something like "I am very disappointed in the Townships ability to enforce it's laws. perhaps we need a new code enforcement officer" - since the twp manager IS that office and RUNS the meeting it would be interesting. However, i don't want to make an enemy, just apply pressure.
A letter to the editor of our local paper saying the same thing has crossed my mind, but i could slant it to 'blame the reprehensible and irresponsible' contractor...

Interesting...when i looked up the developer (no web site - had to do it the old fashioned way) lo and behold they live in the township too - even more 'evidence' that gov't is in their pocket - 67 $500k home will add more to the taxbase than my little shack.

This kind of thing happens here too. We are a small, ethical, builder and the things big builders get away with is disgusting! We jump through all the hoops and pull the permits while they seem to do whatever they like.
I know you wouldn't really vandalize thier equipment; but in case anyone is tempted to do it, trespassing on a construction site is a felony.
It would be nice if putting up a sign would change things. But I highly doubt that it would do much. When people with lots of money decide they want to live in a certain place, there is little to stop them. I've been watching the dunes and natural barriers being bulldozed so that a few rich people can live ON the beach. I'm sure they will cry the loudest when a hurricane wipes them out!
Have you considered something like a class action suit? I'd definitely sue them. They have so much insurance that they'll probably pay you off to keep things quiet.

| It's happening here in the Greenville area of SC also--Early morning;late into the night,clearing off every bit of vegetation..Then they throw up houses an arm's length apart and name the new streets after the beautiful trees they demolished..We have four new developments being constructed within a half-mile radius,and heavy equipment traveling up and down 2 lane roads designated by the DOT to only handle 6000 # or under.. |
