I have taken a lot of pictures in the last free days trying for that elusive shot. I've taken several "almosts". My biggest complaint is that my digital camera has a delay before it takes the shot. I'm always just off. I try to anticipate.... ugh. What am I doing wrong or how can I get it to take the action I'm looking for? Help!

Mine also has a delay so you have to try and judge it accordingly - I have taken about 50 shots and found that it got a bit easier fixing focus on manual but still pressing the shutter release 1/2 way so that the camera was 'ready'and any delay was as small as possible.

That was also my problem. I would look at the viewer and only see the background and no subject. I tried some really cool ideas this week but as of this morning I was to the point of following my puppy to catch him at his favorite bush ~smiles~ However, I finally got a shot I'm happy with:) You honestly won't believe what I went through this week LOL

This was a great one !

I found this pretty hard too, I got a picture that I submitted but it isn't very good. I even went so far as designing some infrared timers to trigger a flash, but never could get a decent result.

The shutter lag on digital cameras sure doesn't make this easier either!

I wonder if another good challenge topic would be 'motion'. I found the biggest problem I have was that when the flash fired and I actually shot what I wanted to shoot before it left the frame, was that it was stopped perfectly. So perfectly in fact that it doesn't look like it was moving in the first place!

'motion' would be a good challenge to get people practising their panning skills, trying for a rock solid focal point, with a blurred background, and similar type shots. Maybe a good follow-on challenge to this one !

I shoot with the Canon EOS D30 and it's burst rate is approximately 3 frames per second, up to approximately 8 frames (at default resolution/compression setting). I shot my picture for this challenge outdoors and the sun was shining and everything. So I was able to shoot around 6-8 frames per second. I got some nice shots on Thursday but I didn't decide until today what my submission would be. I'm pretty happy with it... and I hope you like it too ;)

That's it, go and make everyone jealous of your fancy camera :) Do you get a cut from Canon when you force us all to go and buy D60's to one-up you ? ;)

Looks like my camera has the Burst 3 shot also. Also, it will let you shift the exposure for each of the 3 pictures... hmmmm. Timing between shots is 0.5 seconds. Ok, so now I need to go take more pictures.

Arrgghh is right... I've been running around the house and town trying to get this shot in. After submitting and resubmitting I finally settled on one. Not that I'm completely happy with it but...I'm in at least ;)

This is my first legal submission. Last weeks was disqualified out for being shot before the contest time frame (I was confused about the rules). So this week I was determined to get accepted. It was a challenge. I shot nearly 100 frames trying to get a shot that worked. The time lag is a drag, but thank God for the freedom to shoot, edit and delete. I'd never have shot that much film trying to get THE PERFECT shot.

So sad.. I've had all kinds of ideas but haven't the time to go and shoot them. Got some exams coming up. I've submitted something, for the sake of keeping to the discipline, but it's not what I would've really wanted to shoot. Some of those ideas (I don't mind letting it out) were :-
1. sprinkler among flowers (catching the spray as it leaves the nozzle)
2. sparks from a satay grill (a local Malaysian meat-on-stick delicacy)
3. the smoke trail of a candle being blown out (that wouldn't qualify for a motion trail would it?)

Well, all the best to everyone. I'm sure there are going to be serious heart-stopping shots for STOP-ACTION. Let's see how we did on CURVES.

Mine also has a delay on it, but after a week of getting used to the camera, i also push it halfway down for it to be "ready" then the shot is almost instantanious.

I was trying using the time delay option on my camera - try doing something right in the particular 1/640s out of the 10 second delay, if you want to drive yourself mad :) And then try doing it so that it fits in a particular frame, that you can't see because the camera is on a tripod...

Think I took about 300 pics to get something I really like for this challenge. Then notice you had the incorrect ISO setting :)

Well, these challenges are certainly a challenge...

I tried many things this week when I had free time ... which I didn't have much of! All turned out to be disasters ... including almost setting the apartment on fire and spilling wine all over the place! Needless to say, I didn't submit. I gave up out of self defense.

Well, I did have a not so bad pic of me spilling the glass of wine, but I didn't want the evidence posted .... so ... I was actually thinking of calling Uncle Lou, but he doesn't like pics taken of his "work" with the "organization", if you know what I mean.

Well, now that I think nobody has time to take a pic and post it I will share this:)

I did everything from talk my roomies into our freezing cold pool (it was so cold they couldn't breath so that didn't work) to taking pictures of a stranger at the Mall ice skating rink jumping in air (with his wrist bent). To even facing a black snake:(

Anyway, I was to the point of throwing my poor kitty in water or following my puppy to his favorite bush. Thank God, today I came up with a pic I am happy with. All and all, this really was a fun week.
I can't wait to see what everyone came up with.
NOW, if I can just rest my brain. I can't stop thinking of things to take pictures of.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhh!! I took what I considered a great picuture and got a comment stating I recieved a 1 for no indication of motion. My object was moving!!!!! In fact I was amazed that my camera has the ability to capture such quick movement. Oh the indignity of it all!!! Please people think about your votes.
04/15/2002 04:58:15 AM · #20
Yep, its gonna be a rough one. Most of the photo's shown look like they lack motion. That is exactly what the challenge called for.....STOPPED ACTION. Just because the object or person is not in the air does not mean it is not moving. (It may not be moving very fast, but I don't recall the challenge stating that it had to be in motion at a high rate of speed...) I personally thought it should have been in the air and that is why I was so late in submitting.....
04/15/2002 05:05:23 AM · #21
I quote one of our other members, it should look as though it defies gravity. My subject at the very least is defying gravity but it was in reality moving very fast. Maybe if I had taken it with some water dropping on it since there are so many water images. Oh well, I don't guess you can make someone understand without revealing your entry.

There are two photos which show clear signs of scanning. I hope I am wrong. :(
04/15/2002 05:34:19 AM · #23
Do you mean they were not digital? How can you tell? I'm just curious.
04/15/2002 05:39:51 AM · #24
I'd rather wait until Drew and Langdon make a decision before I reveal my reasons, but the signs are fairly obvious. They are good pictures, I just don't think they are digital.

I thought this should have it's own thread so I'll post my original comment again.
