I knew there were going to be a zillion milk pictures, so I wanted something different. I think I picked right (a 5.43 is respectable), but now I wonder. There was only one butter picture in the lot. What do you think?

i think the lighting on the base piece of chocolate could have been better...it doesn't have the clarity the leaning piece has--i meant to go back and add that as a comment.

i think the out-take is a nice shot, but who knows if it would have done better.

i now crave chocolate.
again.

I like the butter better--but then, butter is my "chocolate"...
There's a lot of appeal in the second shot, the bubbles, the colors, the form the subjects create--I can almost smell those shallots cooking.
(Would it have done better? Who knows?)

Edit: Apparently they're shallots and I can't read titles.

I thinkm the butter is too cluttured, with all the residue from the cooking butter, it takes away from the main subject; IMO i think a clean butter shot is better, maybe, still using a frying pan, but not frying it, i dunno, just my 2 sense.

Simon

EDIT: The chocolate one also could use some lighting work.

Heh, well my entire lighting armamentarium consists of:

a) window light
b) two halogen work lamps 500 watts. Bright, but with a strong yellow cast.
c) 420 EX flash
d) reflectors which consist of white foamcore, black foamcore, tin foil.

Perhaps I can be doing more, but I'd need a good tutorial on using cheap lighting.

Right now I am hungry so the shallots frying in butter would get an 8 minimum :D

The brown bricks on white wouldn't ...

With the shallots you have an interesting composition, nice arrangement of shallots and butter, the bubbles give some action, the lighting is warm. But for some reason people liked cats licking milk bottles or something equally dull so maybe you wouldn't have scored highly ;)

Just to "clarify" =), butter is my other chocolate. I have no objection to: chocolate-chocolate ice cream, anything made in Hershey PA, truffles, Nestle syrup, Toblerone, After Eight dinner mints....etc.

i think you had enough lights--definately--just needed a little bit more on that one piece so that it could compete visually with the other one.

and there is no shadow! where did the shadow for the bottom piece go? when shadows on objects in a photo don't match, it throws some kind of wrench into my brain.

That picture was done in a dark room actually with only the bounce from the 420ex off a 8x10 reflector with tinfoil on it. The lighting, thus, is from above and in front of the pieces. The horizontal piece, therefore, has its shadow directly behind it.
