I've got only 1.50GB of space left on my laptop and therefore I'm unable to take pictures and storing the ones I took on my dad's laptop. Now my dad's gonna buy me an external hard drive but I have no idea which one to choose. It should be 250GB +. Yeah it really doesn't help being computer retard when it comes to the technical stuff :P

Maxtor or Western Digital, those are your best choices. Under $1 a Gig

Western Digital. I have some ancient one still running. And be sure that your computer supports USB2. :)

all my pics are stored on a western digital wich is moved between work and home twice a day, and so far touch wood i have had no problems with it.
80G for £50 GBP - same thing now in the UK is £100 GPB
I think WD has the general vote so far.

What interface does your laptop have? How new is it? USB-2 will give good tranfer speeds as will firewire. USB-1.1 will be dreadfully slow.
If you have firewire and usb-1.1 you should choose firewire, otherwise USB-2 and firewire are very simillar in transfer speed.

MAKE SURE THE DRIVE HAS AN EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY...
(some units work off the USB plug and many laptops can't deliver the required power thru the USB plug) |

Good point Saj, especially firewire on Sony laptops.
USB and Firewire specs are 6 lead connections with two for supplying power. The mini connections on most laptops do without the two power leads for a 4 wire connection to save space.

I've got a Toshiba with a USB 2.0 so that'll be fine that's about one and a half year old.
And do the hard drives that Ram21 suggested have an external power supply?

| I know when I bought my Maxtor it did....but I don't know with the new designs. I think the larger capacity drives might because they likely have more draw. |

I have a 300 Gb Maxtor One Touch II, cost me less than 200 dollars. USB 2, Firewire, external power, works like a charm.

every internal western digital HD i have ever owned has died within 3 years of use. your mileage may vary, but my third just pooped out last month.
what i would recommend is that you get an external hard drive CASE that connects via USB 2.0 or FW (about $50)and then buy a regular 3.5" internal hard drive and put it in the case. that way, you're not tied into a particular brand, and you can put in a smaller drive now and later move up to a soopah-mega-sized drive if you see a good deal or rebate.
if you buy an "external" hard drive, you're going to have to replace it entirely if you ever want to increase the amount of storage it contains.
