I'm going to a soccer game on the 4th. Does that count? It is football everywhere except North America.

Ahhh, another season of ups and downs with my beloved Redskins....I can hear the fight song drifting lazily across the breeze and the groan of the crowd as they lose... :-)

Why is it called football when the players have the ball in their hands most of the time. What's the history behind that?

I don't want to diss the sport, because I like American Football just as much as I like the soccer/football/voetbal/whatever in the rest of the world: not at all. It's just a question like: does a ball need to be round to be called a ball?
Or why do we choose to call these objects that we kick, throw, smash, hit, etc balls. When you think of certain physical associations it is all rather painful.

In its earliest incarnations, the game Americans call "football" actually allowed advancement of the ball by kicking it. Rugby and Australian Rules Football still do. "Our" game changed, but the name never did.

As to the "ouch" association of "balls", I'm pretty sure "ball-the-object" came into being and then slang took care of the rest, with one's 'nads being referred to as "balls" because of the unfortunate resemblance...

Win or lose, we love them. But I'm predicting a better than .500 season this year.

And of course there is my boyhood fav, the Green Bay Packers, where everybody is hoping that Bret Farve has one more outstanding season in him as he nears retirement.
