hmm if you want to get a closer burn around the flower, you can try using the polygonal lasso tool to select the flower. then do select inverse then you can burn as much as you want without touching the flower

Your original photos has great opportunities to improve on. If you see your fixed one there is a bright white halo around the flower. Now if you were trying for an angelic look, you're there. Thry working with levels, curves and then a little bit of selective burning. I myself when starting jumped right into the burn, so many of the photos that I was proud of look so bad now and I've got a long way to go in the PS learning.

Before I jump in, I need to ask what effect you're trying to go for. Are you simply trying to add punch to an image intended to be realistic, or are you going for the surreal look?

I'm not sure what you wanted your photo to look like but using dode / burn I would have it like this:

This image is not really a candidate for "dodge & burn"; there are much better ways of dealing with it. I'll have a go at it shortly to show you what I mean. But for sure, you need to learn how to select out portions of the image to work on them. The halo's a real problem.

Rough selections and a low-res file, but ...
Selected the flower and stem (Magic Wand at 32, used on the Green Channel) -- saved selection -- inverted selection and ran an RGB Curve on the background -- inverted the selection back to the flower, feathered 2 pixels, and used a second RGB Curve. For added "surrealism" use Curves within the individual color channels to switch the colors around.

If you're going for the surreal look, then you didn't go far enough on the color boosting, and didn't take out the background far enough. The reds in the upper portion are strong enought to come out like flames if you darken the entire background with Shadow/Highlight and then burn carefully around them, and you can supersaturate individual color channels without the oversaturation diffusion by using the channel mixer, setting the main component for a color to be that color at 140%, and the other two at -20%. Punch all three colors that way, and seriously burn down the rest of the image. Also, you might want to try for more subtlety along the flower. Use a smaller brush to dodge, and go for only the faintest wisp of a halo, possibly styling off little wisps like mist, and then doing a slight blur to soften.

Here's my take on it, doing pretty much exactly the above:

Brightness contrast, added a layer of b&W and another layer as a sepia tone, some burning in the background, and cropped closer....best I could do with the small file :)
