Do any of you make your own Christmas greeting cards with your own photos on them?

I'm thinking about using this photo this year, or something similar to it....

Comments?

I did a photo for some friends last year for their cards that got a good response.

This year, we have photo of our oldest kissing our youngest on the cheeck that I may use. It is a snap shot, but it will work for family.

About yours. It is a nice image, but I feel it is too impersonal and high-tech looking to send to friends and family.

Hmmm. I don't really like B&W for christmas. It is a little too techy and cold. The droplets are really good, but for a second I thought the object looked more like a palm tree than a snowflake :o) I've never made my own christmas cards so I know I'm no help. I'll just shut up now.

I like the design, but not all in B&W for Christmas. Any way to get a litle color into this? Red bulbs? (Light) Blue rays?

I kind of agree -- I can see a B+W for Christmas, but more a traditional "forest scene" or woodcut look would work better.
For this one, how about applying moderate amounts of bright colors to the insides of the snowflakes, maybe with a radial fill; make them look like ornaments dropping from that gloomy sky...

John,

It's a good photo but I agree that it's a bit too harsh and impersonal. If I received this card I'd expect it to be from some sort of graphical based company to their customers, it's not for your nearest and dearest!

Cheers,

Tim

Who died? For me it looks a bit like a funeral card? Too dark and impersonal, if you'd ask me! Technical it's great, but also typicall 'your style' somehow, didn't look at who asked at first, just went to the link and then I thought it could be done by j setzler (reminds me of this pic you did with your flag)...

Yea - I also do my christmas cards, but not only one, but plenty different! This will be the first year, shooting with the digicam! Last years I had the old one... did more this 'christmas motifs' like a climbing santa claus or trees and color on christmas markts, the stands there... things, which have to do with christmas, but from different angles an dfull of colors... this year I guess, I'll have to do loads of pics of my daughter (4 month - wasn't there last christmas...)!

I'd be intersted in your and others final shot (is it a suggestion for a challenge toppic?)...

I have to agree with the crowd here, John. Not a great personal Christmas card.

When I first looked, I assumed the motif to be a marijuana leaf as used in the NORML campaign.

I'm gonna try the same concept with some different colors and see what I can come up with...

This shot actually is in color, but it's just white on black...

BTW- I like to buy the greeting cards and envelopes from Office Depot and print them myself. The cards are some sort of heavy rag bond paper stock... I'm trying to come up with a photograph that will work well on that surface and not require a glossy surface.

If you find something, let us know. I just printed a B-day card out on some HP card stock - it was "ok", but the colors were pretty washed out. I think you are on the right track with a mostly b&w.

I ordered Hallmark stock on the web a couple of years ago. I was extremely happy with their stock. It's a little spendy, but to me it was worth it.

john,

I think red and gold, or red balls, gold flakes, and a green background would like stunning.

Last year I used Shutterfly for my cards. It wasn't overly expensive and I was able to write a personal note in each one. I don't know if other online photo printers do this or how they compare, but I was happy with them.

john - i like the design, but perhaps if the black = white and the white = a soft blue color? maybe a bit more festive.

myqyl - I use shutterfly all the time and have been for over 2 years and love it to bits and pieces :)

Pretty cool card, John. I would have to see it in color to know if I preferred that. I went in a completely different direction last year with this card. I found a photo of the tree somewhere online and made the curved Christmas tree out of it in Photoshop and 3D Studio Max (to curve it).
I had a very tiny apartment at the time so everyone got the joke. I will probably do something for this year as well. I guess I should start thinking about it.

John,
You can check Ofoto.com also -- they have both printed cards and 5x7 "insert cards" where you slip a 4x6 print into a pocket on the front (matted, ready to frame!).

Dare you to re-shoot that with little neon peace signs instead of snowflakes! I have one made out of leaded glass if you need a physical model...

John, I'll add my 2 cents. The card is beautiful, but in personal, so I agree with the majority. Get personal with it.

I have been doing xmas cards for the past five years. For example, two years ago, I did a self portrait of my wife and me, I cut us out and placed us in a photo of an Hawaiian beach, the caption was "wishing we really were there". It was cute, but still misunderstood, it's my karma to be misunderstood.

Hey John,
I kind of like it, it's differernt - think of all the sappy santa, christmas tree, baby jesus, holiday spirit cards you get. If I received this I would appreciate it for the fact it doesn't look like your traditional xmas card. And if you want to be more personal to your closer friends/family, put a 4x6 pic inside or something.

Thank you very much :) I think you are the first person who said what I'm thinking :)

Though everyone else has already said most of it....

I think it's a cool idea. I actually like the snowflake idea better than the american flag one. There's just something about that particular snowflake that doesn't scream "snowflake" to me though. It looks more like a starfish. I have no suggestions on snowflake-making though.

I appreciate you trying to be different than your normal red green and gold shiney Christmas cards, I would really like to see it in monochromatic shades of a rich cool blue. Think it would emphasize the coolness of the season without being as harsh and stark.

This is a good idea, I think it could look great on black card stock, with silver trim around the photo.
