This thread can give you the chance to both toot your own horn and let me know what I should shoot for. I'd love to be able to hang with the big dogs, but I'm not conceited enough to think I can do it in my spare time when they do it for a living.

If you have not made money on your photographs, what is your average challenge rating? (I suppose I can let a chance sale here and there slide...)

Never made 1 penny, and not intending to make money.
It's all just for fun.
The ribbon I won and all the comments and especialy all those members that selected me as a favorite or photo's of me as a favorite is more then enough pay!

Thank you all!

Edit: can't type!

I am not a professional photog at present, though my work prior to retirement involved some technical photography. I just do it for fun now! Average, about 5.24

I've made nothing from photography- it's just a creative outlet for me. 6.182 average after 75 challenges.

Around 10 dollars from selling a few prints to my friends :-P They weird think is I wasn't planning on selling them and one came up to me and asked if he could buy it and before I knew it, all 5 prints were gone.

Well since I'm considering photography as a profession I'm bound to make money out of it some time, better to start early. I could be rich in ten years! Well probably not. But it's good to dream.

I was a professional photographer for most of my working life, and a succesful one to boot, at a relatively "high" level, and MY average here is 5.33ish, for whatever that is worth :-)

Mine is 6.29, but I have a very infrequent submission rate. 7 submissions since joining in early 2002, lol.

well about my average... pshhhh. I haven't had time to submit much. Anyway, I do senior photos and family sittings about once every two months or so. (lack of advertising and going by networking and referrals alone). But my total cost of 148 digitals, 24 black and white, 24 color, a disc with all the digital and better pictures is only 300.00$ Not competitive but its a good chunk of spending cash. Photography is capturing time and thats doing it for fun or for a profession. Most people understand how quickly time flies and your pictures of "them" are often priceless.

just enjoying being a bad girl for a change ;-)

But what does the average score mean anyway? I mean, look at portfolios all over. You will see amazing shots but a challenge votes average at the 4s, and you will see challenge votes at 6 but folio shows you umm... well... lousy photography.

Average vote only mean you please the masses in challenges. Nothing more then that. It says nothing about your artistic abilities, your technique, your potential in becoming a good photographer.
What really counts is the photography one has to show.

And rex - it doesn't mean you suck. Trust me!

How do you define artistic ability? I'm curious.
