shouldn't you have posted this under 'challenge submissions'? :-)

Great texture, detail, focus - not convinced with DOF. had it been my shot, I think I'd have got more oblique to it, and shot more into the light - bring out the three dimensionality of the subject and get that bar a bit more out of the shot: right now it's demanding my attention and with that DOF that's evidently not what you want.

I can see that impact wrench has seen a lot of use., I cant quite figure out what the bar and background are though.

I love the lighting and composition.

nicely done, now I feel like I need to think a while about my submission.

... which you didn't enter into the challenge because... ??

:o)

I think that the metal bar looks out of place unless you change the angle just slightly to show that it is actually a handle for the cover which the impact wrench is sitting on.

Something about the DOF isn't sitting well with me...

because he must have something "better"... that is John... but that is what makes him so good :0)

Not trying to be bitchy here, but I find it fascinating that the last couple times someone posted an 'outtake' from a challenge they got leapt on for cheating and despicably taking up people's attention ... but when it's a DPC 'celebrity' doing it, he gets fawned at, and nobody even mentions that he might be interfering with the voting or trying to get feedback before choosing an entry.

Not that I think he is. Of course, I don't think the previous folks were either. :->

That's only because the resident "male bitch" hadn't seen this yet.
I stand by my opinion (stated in the Matrix Outtakes thread that people should not post any photos until submissions for that challenge are closed, and preferably until the voting for that challenge is over.
Requests for opinions on current challenge topics should be made by PM or email.

This is not an outtake. It was the photo that I made for my submission... I decided not to participate in the challenge....

I don't think it makes any difference who posts what unless they post their challenge photo to the forums before or during the challenge... You made your point about not posting these images but you didn't say why it wasn't ok. Care to elaborate?

I like it Setzler... has nice contrast between the blacks and whites. In my entry for this one, I did a LOT of tweaking with Levels, etc. to try to achieve the best contrast and to balance the black and white parts. Kind of fun doing this! This is my first serious attempt at doing a B&W/Duotone/sepia picture.

Hope I get some helpfull comments.

I'll elaborate on it...I had already submitted my photo for the duotone challenge but upon seeing what you didn't submit I decided I am going to go back tomorrow afternoon and redo mine. So by sharing with everyone what you didn't use everyone has a minimum of what to try for.

That's a good thing then... maybe everyone should do it more often to up the ante for the quality of the challenge submissions :)

I (and some others) spoke to the issue in this thread.

All I can suggest is that you avoid the threads in the forums... Then you will not be tainted in any way by what gets posted :)

Yeah but what if your photo stops someone from submitting just because they feel inadequate to your outake?

I can't answer that... I don't have an objective to keep people from submitting. I always enjoy viewing the better images in the challenges though... I'm interested in seeing outtakes. I like to see other ideas and get a feeling for what makes people tick.

You can't seriously think the photo I posted would have much, if any, impact on anyone.... It's a lifeless bit of metal. There are parts of it that are out of focus... there is a blown out spot on the wrench... You can't honestly tell me that this photo is setting any examples here :)

This doesn't mean much to me unless i see it as part of a series :) Otherwise, it looks like a pretty boring photo.

John,
I took this about four hours before you posted your matrix outtake :-/
Even though it was for a different challenge it felt like that particular subject had been 'tainted' or something.

I was pissed at first (not the best surprise to wake up to!), then I thought stuff it I'll go with this because it's sufficiently different.

In the end I shot something else.

I don't like the idea of posting pre-challenge. I'd prefer it if outtakes were kept till after the results but people seem to have moved on to the next set of challenges by then. Just my opinion.

And if you think I can ignore a thread where John Setzler has posted a new shot you're dreaming : )

Then they've probably already seen Setzler's other work in the numerous challenges he has entered and quit DPC entirely.

Bod, that's a great shot... Its definitely better than mine without a doubt... mine was a rehash of my 'magnetic patriotism' photo that I did last winter... it's stuffed in my 'abstract' portfolio here on dpc i think...
