Help! I am currently using PhotoSuite 2000, which came with my camera, to work on my photographs. However, when I save a picture as a JPG, it automatically saves the picture in Paint (the one that comes with Windows XP) and I lose a lot of quality. My JPG's come out really pixely. I either need help finding another program, or need to fix something I'm doing wrong. Has anyone else run into this? Any advice would be much appreciated.

'Automatically saves it in Paint'?

Do you mean when you double-click the image it opens in paint? If you right-click you should get an option to 'open in ...' and be able to select the program you want from a drop-down menu. It's a file association thing, but I'm not going into how to change that here.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I save it as a JPG, it automatically puts it in the Paint program. Could that be because Paint is the only program I have for viewing JPG's? If so, can I update my Paint to something else?

As for the person that posted the link for the free editors... I already tried them. I downloaded Ultimate Paint which is very helpful, but I guess it was a free trial because it stopped working after 3 days. I've tried downloading it again but have had no luck. Thanks for the post though.

I must agree with Ed, that this sounds like a file association problem. This means that your PhotoSuite2000 application can view jps's, but when you open them from outside the program (ie. double-click to open in windows explorer) it opens in pint.

Lets give this a go! You have XP, so open you windows explorer and browse to any .jpg file you can find. Hold down your left shit key on the keyboard and seletc the "Open with..." option. A list of all the installed executable programs will appear. Scroll down the list until you find the entry for PhotoSuite2000. Select it by clicking on it once, and then tick the box that says "always use this program to open these files".

This will modify the file association. In plain terms, this means that the next time you open a jpg file, it will open in PhotoSuite2000. Give that a go and let me know how you get on.

you probably need to change you asociations,

but,

could it be that you also need to change your compression ratio to a lower compression and higher quality image? that way the pic may not look so pixelated.

Good point.
Leah, check also to see, when you save jpg, what options you can set. It may be that you have something set to reduce the quality of the image for use on the net for example.

Open up my computer or Explorer > Go to tools >folder options > File types > Find Jpg > Change to program you want to open it with.

See if that makes a difference.

Thank you all for your answers. I will try opening the JPG's with PhotoSuite and see how that works. That seems to be the easiest fix.

Also, I am very very new to digital photography. I hate to say this, but I am at a loss for what to change my settings to in Paint. I'd have to have somebody tell me word for word what my settings should be, compression, etc. This is all very Greek to me. I just enjoy taking pictures. :)

OK, I will work on this a bit and see what I can do. Thanks all!
