Yes that is true....and I did. Obviously some people need it spelled out for them...!

Thanks anyway Jaxter...LOL!

I don't generally read the title. To me if the title is needed to indicate what the image is saying then the image has failed.

Oh and having an open mind does not equate to accepting any and every interpretation that anyone puts forward.

Having an open mind means to consider without prejudice whether it fits, explore ideas that may be different and then to make one's opinion.

That opinion can still be "does not meet the challenge" and not be close-minded.

Hehehehe...yes...but if they don't get it by the image OR the title...then really...! I thought the whole idea of a challenge is to think outside the square and see what you can come up with. Well it seems that too many are stuck inside the square. Where is the imagination gone nowadays!!

Oh NO! Not the title vs no title debate! ;^) Have to pull out that forum search tool and find some good material for this one... he-he.

Affluence to me is one who drives the expensive car, lives in the big houses and who signs your check. A lot of other things apply but that is at the top of my list.

It just erks me every time someone says 'read the title' after discussing whether an image meets the challenge or not.

Give the voters some slack, eh. Photography is very, very (did I say very) subjective and each viewer should be allowed to explore the images as they see fit and determine their own meaning. :)

I think everyone's view on affluence would differ, but I bet if you ask 100 people there would be more flash cars than water, I think the challenge entries say it all.
Out of the box entries very rarely do well in the challenges, as I know only too well, LOL

Affluence, by definition, implies material wealth. There are other ways to be rich in life (of course) but that isn't applicable here.

Affluence,i.e.Material Wealth,is in the eye of the beholder...A few years ago my wife was hired as the negotiator for the sale of a sports franchise..For several weeks our driveway and front yard in our lower middle-class neighborhood was filled with Bentleys,Rolls's and XKEs while numbers were being crunched...Several evenings each week she would be picked up in a stretch limo and whisked off to the formal negotiation site...I'm sure many of our neighbors at the time thought we were extremely affluent, when actually nothing could have been further from the truth!

But their opinion was based on the cars in your driveway... which were MATERIAL items.

Not if most Canadians have any say about it. ;o)

This is a very tough challange. A basic defination of affuence from dic.com (A plentiful supply of material goods; wealth. A great quantity; an abundance.) It can easily apply to an individual or a society. In a broad sense, I think it may be different than what an individual values intellectually or a limited natural resource. Physical stuff and ubiquitous material wealth seems to be what I percieve affluent to mean.

.. but would we want them? Well,.... maybe some of them. ;o)

FYI, calling everyone that disagrees with your opinion of your photo closed minded is actually a very closed minded action. Your opinion is different then others, your opinion is not the only correct opinion.

The mere fact that we're in this forum via an internet connection, most likely on a pc,discussing shots taken with our digital cameras, makes all of us affluent to the majority of the population..

You mean: having a mind of your own is not allowed in challenges? You get your but kicked for stepping out on the grass? The roof should be red and a tree should be green and only the photos of big houses, big cars and big boats are fitting in?

In comparison to where I live, even a photo of a normal, average kitchen in the USA would qualify as 'my' representation of affluence LOL (and I know what I'm talking about, I lived there)

Clapping my hands for this statement, Bravo!!!!

Admittedly I didn't enter this challenge, but I have voted on it and I'm far from saying I'm perfect or my view is the only view but I felt the entry as a whole was well below average for a DPC challenge, and that's not even considering relevance to the challenge topic, I'm refering to technically and creatively.

Obviously that said there are some lovely shot's I'm just saying the overall standard was lower than I had come to expect.

I think I am just going to quit posting until you all finally realize that my opinion is the only correct opinion.

(And for those of you that just don't "get it"... that was a joke.)

I very much had "material wealth" and affluence in mind when I took my photo. However, there are very valid, alternate points of view on my subject matter, and I guess I have done a poor job of expressing what I wanted. Before I go farther, though let me propose a hypothetical situation:

Imagine that there was a challenge on "Delicious Food" and I were to submit a glorious picture of a dish of dog meat. I get the feeling that people would down-vote it simply because to them, it is gross, even though large groups of people would disagree. Or to turn it around, what if I submitted a lovely Cow steak. Would a Hindu visitor equally be offended and down-vote it? Am I asking too much to expect either visitor to understand or know about the other POV? Do I have to keep it to the lowest common denominator?

Please point me to where I said that having "a mind of you own is not allowed". And while you are searching for that statement I think you should slowly step back from your computer... stand up... reach around... and pull the bunched up panties out from your behind.

p.s. If you consider a low score for one of your photos that you submitted on the internet to be judge by random people that you have never me to be a "butt kicking"... than you need to get out more!

p.p.s. Sure where YOU live that may be the case, but this isn't about where YOU live. It's about pleasing the masses if you want a high score, plain and simple (and this can be done based on where yo ulive... take the Icelandics for example). If you want to be creative and step outside the box then fine, but don;t start crying because it wasn't seen that way by everybody. Stepping out of the box is by its very own nature THINKING DIFFERENTLY THAN OTHER PEOPLE! So most other people are not going to see things the way you do. Why is this theory so hard to grasp???

edit: OK, I'm done, I'm hungry and I'm going to lunch. Good luck to everybody with their entries!

edit again: I know many don;t want to believe this because they are attached to the image they submitted, but maybe you are getting a low score because your picture just isn't that good technically. It's easy to say people are voting you down because it doesn't meet the challege, but how do you know that? Unless all 200 people that vote say that than I am not convinced. if I get a low score it's because my picture wasn't good... plain and simple... and there is nobody to blame other than myself. And this challenge is no exception in my case either.
