i mean really though. i know how cute your friggin kid is to you, or your friggin dog, or your friggin cat, but how about maybe you show me something i've not seen before, eh? there's only so much cute i can take before my skin starts to crawl. is it the same people with the same kids and pets every week? i think i recognized one of this week's runts from a few weeks back. they're always a stretch to meet the challenge, rarely if ever have anything to do with what we're supposed to be shooting. why post them here? that's what your fridge is for. i know your world revolves around your little darlings, but the sad fact is that nobody else gives a rat's petoot, they're just more kneebiters and fleabags to us. quit exploiting these helpless creatures, quit stretching the subject beyond belief so as to include your kid/pet, show us something we've never seen before, i know you can do it.
thanks i feel better now.

I've been dieing for an opportunity to use this quote, this seems like a good place to drop it.
"There is good art, great art, and art that does not interest you. Bad art is the province of snobs" - Robt. Williams

Johnny,

I certainly understand your frustration. It seems like in every challenge, we get a certain number of photographs that are a "stretch" to the challenge, and invariably there are a couple of kid/pet photos among those. That doesn't mean, however, that all kid/pet photos fail to meet the challenge; for example your own jezebel's corner was not, in my mind, too much of a stretch at all, and I scored it an 8 (granted, my personal voting world allows for a lot of room in interpreting the challenge).

Also bear in mind that many posters are new to photography, and may feel most comfortable honing their skills on familiar and cooperative subjects at the beginning, before moving on to more difficult subjects. That said, if you feel any photo is too far off the mark, you should definitely score accordingly, and comment if you wish. Please remember though to keep the tone of all comments polite and constructive.

Thanks,
Terry

I think you should get over yourself .. people can post what they want and just vote according to the challenge and their photo ... maybe that is what they are proud of and if i had kids i'd be doing the same thing ... everyone is entitled to shoot what ever they want ... so get used to the images or just ignore them ... either way - get over it!

I believe that everyone has the right to post whatever photo they want as long as it is within the DP guidelines. Granted some are not very interesting time after time but that does not mean that all kid, pet, etc. photos are boring and should not be posted. I would hate to see any good photo not be posted because of the subject. Remember your personal preferences may not be the same for others.

As I have stated in a post a while ago... There are some people who make a living/career out of photographing people, kids, flowers, pets, animals in general, landscapes...
I would rather see these people encouraged on how to photo these subjects well than be intimidated into not wanting to photo them at all.
I, for one, love to photograph people. I came to this site to hone that skill. Maybe some think it is not art because a photograph of a child, esp. may be endearing to only the family... this may be true.. but not every photograph is intended to be art. It is intended sometimes to be a part of history - even if that is only family history..
Are there any constructive comments people can make in order to help a photogapher create an endearing photograph that belongs on the wall rather than the refrigerator? I'd really like to see that from members.
What do you think?

Thank-you, Terry, for that post you made. I am fairly new here. I've been in a few challenges. I work hard on my photos, trying to keep in the spirit of the challenge and trying to come up with good quality photos at the same time. I really appreciate comments when I get them, especially when they are constructive and suggest alternative ways I could have portrayed my subject better. I then keep that in mind when I work on the next challenge. I always get rude comments, though that seems rather degrading and almost hurts when after I've worked so hard. I wish people would keep that in mind. How do they feel when they get such rude comments? Okay, enough!! LOL Connie

i'll bring a bucket for you to puke in :)

I am feeling the same way but it's been argued again and again. That's just not hte typical audience in DPc.

If you want to talk about pictures that do not meet the challenge, why restrict it to just kids and pets? What about self portraits, family, strangers, scenics.

My biggest problem was when it seems to me that the person is just taking a picture to get in the challenge. After leaving some really crappy comments, I have learned that this is usually not the case. It is usually well meaning people that are using the best that they have to make a picture. What is wrong with that? Drop the elitism. Not everyone has the same knowledge or equipment, or imigination. Most of us are here to learn, and hopefully one day impress.

Connie: You and I, (and actually Sonifo) had our posts enter at the same time, so, it is interesting that yours compliments mine. I just wanted to point it out above because it may have been missed.

I agree with you whole heartedly.

What do you mean by the typical audience in DPC? I would like to understand this.. it is just a question.
Please read my post above.

There are portraits, however, that are quite good. Just depends on how you see it.

Here's a link to a photographer that once took photos of me for a Austin Amearican Statesman story (something related to music), who has some really interesting portraits on his site. A lot of his "self-portraits" were quite good and very creative, not the run of the mill type of snapshots. He's a pro who works for the newspaper and other things.

Oh, and CLICK on "about" section and go to his "personal webpage", some of his most interesting works are in his "diary" under "words".

Yes, Karen, thanks for posting again. It took me awhile to write what I did and you must have posted while I was composing. You know, children and pets are actually harder to photograph than adults. Adults usually stay still in the process, whereas children and pets are active and don't necessarily stay still when commanded to (well, unless they are alseep..LOL) Therefore, I would like to see a challenge where we have to take those photos and see what we get. ...And, as someone said before...a puke bucket will be provided for those that think they need it. LOL Connie

Audience here likes beautiful and relaxing photos, I THINK, in my opinion. Hence the term "cute and cuddly", which is FINE. Take the REFLECTION challenge: there are about 50 submissions that contain a water reflection in nature but most of htem aren't done creatively and with exception of 2-3 (one of them won the contest), they look very "touristy" (i.e. your average vacation snapshot) and they all score better than some of the more creative and interesting submission in reflections.

Ever notice that all it takes is a few grains of sand to make even silk sheets unbearable?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels disappointment in the negative and critical comments that may be forcing beginners from this site because they aren't as "advanced" as the chosen few. Thank all of you for restoring my faith in the basic goodness of the "common" photographers on this site.

I will go thru this website more later.. but i'm about to run out.. bbl.
In the meantime.. thank you for sharing this website.. what I saw quickly: He seems to have some nice work,...some even inspiring.
Thank you, Paga', for the encouragement.. I hope some of this can be tranlated into future threads and comments.
:)

All I am trying to say is that not ALL portraits of kids and people are boring. They can be done creatively and interesting. Taking photos of children in the 'normal snapshots' could be construed as 'boring' but done properly a portrait reveals a lot about both the subject + the photographer :)

I don't support Paganini's attitude at all. However, what he seems to be complaining about here (as opposed to johnny who started this thread) MOSTLY is the voters not the photographers. He notes there WERE creative shots entered but they didn't SCORE as well as some of what he considers boring shots.

Lets find johnny want-a-be president and hang him by his toes and pin up pictures of kids, animals, and flower all around him. Torture! hehehe What do ya say?

Come here, johnny.

Negative threads like this just constantly erupt in arguments. Those of you who try to keep things positive, thank you. Those of you who perpetuate these arguments, I'm asking you to stop now or to leave the site.

There are a lot of people who are sick of the constant bickering in the forums, and I'm one of them. In all honesty, if you really dislike the site or its users or its content, you'll be much happier elsewhere, and there's no sense trying to bring everyone else down to that level of discontent with you.

This site was started as a place for people to grow as photographers. The bickering absolutely needs to stop.

Pag, this guy has some really great portraits! I personally liked the Green Fairy. Have you thought of doing an Artist of the Day thread of him? Or did you and I missed it?
I think it is important to encourage everyone, no matter what their subject matter, no matter what their expertise.
You had made a really good point when you said that you are a winner every time you post a photo. I didn't use to feel that way, but with my 7 sins entry, I am very proud. Some people like it, some dont, but most importantly, I see it the way no one could ever see it, and I am proud.
The following is a general statement for everyone to keep in mind.
It is important to remember too, that some people aren't comfortable enough yet with their photography to just let lose and take pics of strange and unusual things yet.
When you learn to ride a bike, you wear a helmet and elbow pads. The elbow pads eventually come off when you get better, and then even the helmet will come off some day. It just takes time, and a lot of encouragement.
Encourage everyone. Even if YOU don't like it, someone else does. Just comment to the fact. "while this is technically well done, it's not my cup of tea." then say what IS good, and WHY it isn't your cup of tea. I think it's easier for people to accept it than just saying "don't get it".
If you say something "negative" about a photo, equal it out with something positive as well, if possible. It really makes a difference.
