Took a few shots of my wife today with my D70 and when the pictures open in Photoshop, the highlights look like this:

This does not appear on the LCD screen, or in the thumbnail images where the photos are saved. They first appear in the preview thumbnail in PS CS, and then when opened to the full image. Shot all of these in Raw. What happened??

ouch my first guess would be sensor damage but not sure. There was a thread a while back of a guy whose camera was dropped in the lake, he got it back and cleaned and dried it but now all his pics have stuff similiar to this on it. Any intense heat or maybe water damage lately?

None. Hasn't been stored anywhere near intense heat or water. Other pics from just a day or so ago with highlights are fine. No water damage either.

If it does not appear on the thumbnail, It seems to me that it is not what the sensor is seeing and reporting.

Is this RAW or is it JPEG? Am I right in assuming the black spot could have been a white highlight? Is there any possibility that this is a compression artifact? Have you thought of trying to update the firmware?

All the photos were taken in Raw. The highlights in the thumbnails look like normal highlights, and I just popped the CF card back into the camera and they appear normal on the LCD too.

Bad Photoshop load maybe? This example is a crop from the orginal pic, but this showed up when opened at full size, so it can't be anything related to compression.

Haven't thought of firmware but I've had the camera a long time and this is the first I've seen this problem.

Is it repeatable, or is it a one-time weirdness?

mail me one of the jpg's without going therough photoshop at all? Write directly from your card to e-mail attachment?

Never mind I see it's RAW. Are you openiong RAW directly in PS? I can't do that, only have 7.0... Use the Canon RAW converter to make a tiff outside of PS and send an LZW-compressed tiff maybe?

Woops I was too slow in typing....The only editing software I have right now is PS so it's the only thing I can use to convert files. All shots are on the Nikon so I've got no Canon software.

There is someone complaining of this same exact problem on his d70 just today...lemme find it...

same exact thing. I'd send it in if it were me.

Just if you can do it outside PS. I can handle attachments up to 3 Mp. Tiff at LZW compression is fine too.

Are you telling me that I'm going to have to convert and become a Canon user? lol Better yet, sell my Jeep and buy a Mamiya ZD

Yeah...because Canon's don't have problems also? That's just silly talk dude -- it comes with the territory Nikon, Canon, Mamiya, they all have problems.

You're ruining my excuse to upgrade!

Okay, I remembered I have an old version of Photo Impact Pro and it can not open NEF files from Nikon, but it DOES open a small preview thumbnail and there is no problem there either. I'm going to try two things: 1. CLose and reopen PS, and also re-download the Raw files from the CF card.

Bear_music I can't create jpegs for you without going through PS, but when I did create one, the problem remained. I also noticed that if I changed the white balance before I opened the photo, the problem got worse or better depending on which one I chose. I'll keep you posted.

Remind me not to panic so much next time. Rebooted PS and now the pics are opening up like normal.

They still suck, but no weird color issues this time. Well, at least if it happens to someone else, they'll know what to try first.

turn clipping warning off?

That's just natural, I would freak out too.

Good luck in your further photography adventures.

View -> Gamut Warning

In the RAW converter (ACR) there are two tick boxes, one for highlights and one for shadows. Blown highlights show as red whereas lost shadow detail shows in blue. Other RAW converts probably show something similar.

its a spot.

I checked and the gamma warning wasn't on, however I DID reboot PS so maybe it had been before and reset to defaults. My guess is that when PS loaded the first time, something went scrooey.

Thanks to all for the info, I learned some new things.

I was too late. My guess was same as Uusilehto. Most editing softwre has a highlight feature that shows blown areas. That is what it looks like. When you reset it went back to default.
