have any of you noticed that a good portion of the entries for the secondary colors challenge are flowers? some are nice but i dont like flowers enough to sit through 100 photos of them.

I agree. I finally had to take a break before the bees swarming around my monitor became dangerous.

I mean no offense to anyone......but how about getting a little creative and leave flowers out of the submissions for a while. EVERY challenge has a flower in it. Granted, some of them are VERY good. Good enough to buy or sell, but enough already. We've seen them before, they are nothing new and because of that they might get voted down. I try to be objective but flower after flower after flower................

I'm sorry, I guess this belongs in the Rant forum but I just wated to add my 2 cents worth.

*sigh*
I really don't like these 'too much X in the current challenge' threads.

Last week I saw my girlfriends score plummet from 6.3 to 5.7 while the 'too many dark pictures' thread was going on. This week it looks like the flowers are gonna take the extra hit.

Dang it! That ruins my idea for "Matrix"!!!

:)

I can confirm that flowers are taking a big hit in the voting, having seen a drop from 6ish to 5ish over the last 50 votes.

Its a shame, as my first idea was big and purple and not a flower, but I went against it for reasons of taste and decency.

When there was a free study challenge most complained of to many people shot. When there was an egg challenge everyone complained of to many eggs. Stop complaining if you would vote the unique, creative and out of the box shot high then I think we would shoot something besides flowers. Think about it. I have tried to take a picture of something totally out of the box //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=11434 And look at my score. It didn't do very good at all. I think I will stick with the easy stuff. Being creative doesn't work for the voters here.

I dunno. I like flower shots. They're not growing here yet (Eastern Canada) so I don't mind voting on them. I'd rather look at a nicely executed flower shot than a "very creative and full of hidden meanings" shot that is very poorly executed. Just my$.02.

My glass entry fell during the too dark thread too. I agree, let's just vote what's in front of us. No need to muddy the water for everyone else.

ROFL - great comment!

I would rather look at a beautiful shot of a beautiful flower than a boring shot of some plastic object or stuffed toy.

i'll have to thank people for voting down the flowers :) cuz i am getting the benefits i think (non-flower), and saw my shot from 5.0 on the opening night to 5.8 now. hope the trend continues. :P

OK, but $.02 Canadian isn't worth quite as much...(just kidding!)

this is very easy to fix... for each challenge just clearly state "no flower shots"
but there should be a challenge for just flowers that can fall under - flower category
now everybody will be happy :)

Could some please say something nice about flowers. Since this thread started my photo has plummmeted.

FLOWERS ARE GOOD!

the only reason i took a picture of some flowers is because my last photo came in 2nd to last. i needed a motivation booster, and flowers was the key!

Yup, nothing wrong with flowers, and it's hardly a surprise to see so many in a colour challenge is it?
The only thing I will say is that if you're going to do a flower, you'll have to do it real well to get a good score from me, simply because I've seen them done real well so many times. A flower worth a 10 is a flower worth a 10 in any challenge so long as it meets the challenge.

Cheers Bod! Now I gotta see if that will help my score ... click click click.

I've noticed it's mostly the guys who seem to complain that there are too many photos of flowers, kids, pets, flags, etc.
05/15/2003 01:32:23 PM · #19
I took a flower picture in an attempt to blend a couple of cliches. I thought the result was sweet and the concept was funny. I think I was the ONLY one. lol I have enjoyed all the flower pictures in the challenge, some are very well done, as are many of the other subjects, and some are not so expertly done, again, like many other subjects. Just vote slowly, not vengefully because its the 5th flower in a row you've done. Someone was trying to show you something with that flower picture, try to see that, and go beyond the actual flower shot. Its a .......zen thing. ;)

Flowers are simply photogenic no matter what. I use to hate it but it has been one of my favorite subjects recently. Try it, you'll see what I mean :-)

Too many flowers? I don't believe there could be such a thing. :) actually, I love to photograph flowers because you can do so much with them. Their colors and textures and silouettes and diversity make them an excellent photographic subject. You can light them from the front, from the back, crop them tightly, photography them softly, sharply, in the field or in the studio. Create shadows or minimize them. And, they are natural, how amazing is it that such incredible beauty is brought to us by nature.

They are beautiful and handy. I'm one of those person who turns to them when have no idea what to shoot at. What a lifesaver!

LOL Kiwiness. What's the matter? Are you in danger of missing out on your 4th ribbon this month? You haven't scored less than 6.5 since the middle of March! You haven't had a picture score in the 5's since February! Give some of us lifetime 5'ers a break would'ya! LOL!

I'm just teasing Kiwi. There's a reason why you're on my favorites list.

I don't mind the flower shots, but I must admit that it gets a little overwhelming looking at so many of them. I probablly give them lower scores on average when there are so many, but I still give the ones that stand out high scores. Personally, I would rather see a poorly executed shot of something unfamiliar and interesting than a poorly executed flower shot. My photos aren't up to professional standards so I refrain from submitting any flower shots to the challenges, although I of course take many because flowers are beautiful and very photogenic. Good luck to the flowers.

There are other things that bother me more. Just because lots of people have the same good idea for (say) a color challenge, doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad idea. :-> It does mean we tend to get sick of it, though.

Personally, I find it interesting how every challenge I've seen so far has at least one (usually very bad) American flag shot shoehorned into it.
