I am interested in setting up a small group to work through Freeman Patterson's "workshop books" together, in a similar vein to the mentorship threads, as a small 10-15 person, closed group (mainly closed to prevent people from using it as a general "here's my pic" posting thread). Our mentor will be "Freeman Patterson".

For those who don't know him, but are interested, Freeman Patterson's website is found at freemanpatterson.com. His subject is nature, and I would describe his work as photo-impressionistic, but that is perhaps an oversimplification.

Is there anyone else interested? Sign up in this thread, and then we'll start a DPC Freeman Patterson Workshop thread. I am presuming this isn't out of "bounds" for DPC, as it's really no different than the DPC mentor threads, and we'll keep it as a single thread too.

Ursula, I know you are a Patterson fan as well someone who has already achieved some beautiful Patterson-like shots. Hopefully, you'll be a part of this!

I would like to start with the book I just got, "Photography of Natural Things", but I am willing to get any of his books that we all agree on to work with. I wouldn't mind doing the one I just read either: "Photography and the Art of Seeing". That definitely has some great exercises in it!

Please indicate your interest in this thread!

Neil - I just recently acquired the "...Art of Seeing" book and have read about 2/3's of it. This book does require some feedback to work. I'm interested in giving it a try, but am worried about keeping up - you know, work, kids, etc... ;^)

I'll jump in if you don't mind. Never heard of him until now but I really like his use of color and juxtaposition.

I'd rather like to be involved in this. Do I need to set about acquiring the books?

I'd be interested in this. A couple of Patterson books I have are:

Photography and the Art of Seeing - I like the exercises in here
PhotoImpressionism

forgot one:

Photographing The World Around You

We'd have to buy the book to paricipate? Might leave me out :-( He's very good, though.

Note my signature line, btw....

Can't go wrong getting "...the art of seeing", but you might want to wait to see which book the group (once it's formed) want's to do first!

You could try the library... the books are also pretty inexpensive from Amazon. Would love to have your eye and insights here Robert.

Edit: Hmm... you should note that some of us (me) dont have signatures turned on...so I can't see anyone's. IMHO these taglines get in the way of reading the key info and enjoying the forums. But I'll turn them on just to see yours (at least for a few minutes :)

This is way, way small-town America here, our library doesn't have this stuff. Not gonna be any books in my budget until at least September; I am suffering dSLR budget-blowout. Wanna swap a signed original print of mine for the book you order and have shipped to me? (grin)

I'd love to participate and think I might even be useful...

You have a deal. I was thinking of buying you one as a present anyway :) But I'd be happy to have a print. Do I get to choose?

Nature photography is one of my weakest points, but I have always like dFreeman Patterson's photography and writing. I might be interested in joining a group that is working through one of his workshops.

I purchased my copy of "Photography and the Art of Seeing" at Amazon.com. Had to buy it used because this book is a special order and I'm lousy at waiting! ;^)

Neil - If this is the book that gets used, count me in please. Thanks!

Robt--another option, faster and free:

Cape Library Catalog

Looks like they have "Photography and the Art of Seeing". You can request to borrow it from the closest branch as well. (I don't know what part of the cape you are on).

I found several copies used for about $16 plus shipping at Half.com (owned by eBay).

Note that there's over 20 books with "Art of Seeing" in the title.

I'd like to do this, but I probably won't have time to keep up with it regularly, so I might just "audit the class" this time.

I am interested in this (Freeman Patterson is my hero :) ) but I am not sure I have a lot of time to participate - too many things going on. But I'd be willing to try :)

Freeman Patterson Art of Seeing at Amazon is $14.95 (paperback).

Free shipping if your order is $25 or more, so you could also get:

Photography of Natural Things

Total is about $30, with free shipping (US).

I just got the latter book though, so I have yet to see what sorts of "exercises" it provides, though the pictures in it are stunning as usual.

Maybe Ursula has a favorite book of his good for our "exercises".

Then there's the library route...

My library has Photographing the world around you: a visual design workshop in stock.

This is too wild! I just orderd two of his books July 15th (should be here tomorrow)! The books I ordered are:
1. Photographing The World Around You:

2. Photography And The Art Of Seeing

I orderd mine off amazone and since it came to $29.92 I got free shipping.

Edit (sp)

Not to mention he has a new one coming out September 3, 2005!

I own "Photography and the Art of Seeing", "The Garden", and "Photography of Natural Things". I can get a couple more at the library.

I haven't done much of this kind of photography, but would be interested in getting into it. Let me know what book you guys decide on and I can get a copy.

So Far:

Workshop Members: nshapiro, dahkota, AJAger, Nusbaum, glad2badad, ursula, GeneralE, colyla, fifield, bear_music, cpanaioti

We'll leave membership open through tonight.

Looks like the "Art of Seeing" is the one most readily available to us. Looking through my other book, Photography of Natural Things, shows it might also be a good choice. Basically, it goes through all kinds of photographic subject matter (insects, plants, water, invisible things) and discusses his approaches to photographing it.

Still, the "Art of Seeing" seems to be to be a good inspirational book to get us to look at things differently, break out of old habits and molds, and produce some unique (or FP like) images.

I've also been thinking more about how we can do this together. We can go a chapter or "goal" at a time, with no "rush" to the pace--just whatever pace feels right--to generate discussion, learning, and interaction here. Of course, where a set of exercises is suggested, we can do those. Sometimes the exercises are less explicit, so we'll have to each suggest them based on the reading. But another aspect of this, which I think will be most fun, might be to pick a shot from that chapter which illustrates the general inspiration and techniques, and try to use what we've read to try to emulate it in style (not necessarily exact content), and even extending it with our own unique view of the technique.

Of course, there may be other good suggestions on how to proceed, so fire away.

For something like this I'd expect I'd want the book for an extended period of time, anyway, if not forever...

I would love to join in, but I am kind of hesitant, considering the caliber of people here. Also, I'll be able to shoot only on weekends....So, if you'll have me, I'd be happy. If not, I can just lurk around.

I say count me in, if there is still an opening. I don't own any of his books yet, but I am keen to try this out. I see he does a lot of work in my country as well.

edited to say: Ah, I see the local online bookstore carries 7 of his books. Just say which, and I'll get it.
