Forget sci-fi and guns, the Matrix is about religion

Looks like everyone got what they wanted this week.

Have you ever seen Neo and Saddam Hussein in the same room at the same time? Makes you think...
05/14/2003 10:54:13 AM · #3
Well, they both have "guns, lots of guns".

So you're saying Saddam is 'The One?' Now that's one scary thought...

For me The Matrix is just a Tabula Rasa onto which any and every wannabe intellectual can project their own idea, be it religion, free will, what it is to be human, etc.

Its just cheap and easy SciFi, almost as bad as a Star Trek 'Holodeck' episode. The ole virtual reality idea is almost as bad as time travel and martian invasion as far as unoriginality goes.

Which is why I will be submitting a bad picture of a kitten sniffing a flower held by a small child, titled 'Unoriginal Cliche'.

Or that he starred in Bill & Ted's ?

Further down the what is reality and religion side road, I found this

though it isn't bouncy

the funny thing about mass-market science fiction/fantasy is that it lacks the depth, breadth, originality, innovation, or intelligence of the best science fiction. the best science fiction explores themes that great literature does, with the added bonus of innovative technical or imaginative elements.

the matrix and harry potter, just to name a couple examples, both fit into the former category: recycled, simplistic, rehashed cliche of MUCH better stuff that's come before.

that said, the matrix was a lot of fun as a movie because it was VISUALLY very well done, and it had a great soundtrack.

Wow, I never thought it was a popular movie because of the story. Everyone I talk to loved it because of the stylized visuals. I loved it because of the music. Everyone has copied what the Matrix started... especially that stop-and-rotate thingie they did. It's ahrd to find an action movie without that same type of metal music. Matrix wasn't the first to do that, but they sure did it the best... in the main stream anyhow. And how about them fighting in the sky scenes? Yes, old kung fu movies have been doing that for years, but come on, the Matrix did it right.

The last thing most people thought was cool in this movie was the concept of virtual reality.

On Edit: Yeah, what Mag said.

There's even a sequence in the movie 'Cats and Dogs' that is exactly like one of the action sequences in 'The Matrix', done by a cat no less. That was funny.

Ok after checking out this site and reading the responses so far on this thread I think I finally figured out an approach to the challenge...It's like "The Wizard of Oz" was one of the quotes found on that page, and then from reading this thread...Dogs and Cats...hehehe I got a dog and I got cats and kittens to....oh how cliche can I be for a challenge I really have no idea what I am doing but I think Toto is snoozing under my bed and the cat that rules is snoozing on the bed...my mind is definately thinking finally a way to show 3 cute little kittens, a big Tom cat that rules and a Dog who merely drools...lol

OneSweetSin... is there a reason you are being so vocal in bashing the challenge? So much negative energy... it's really quite simple. Don't submit a photo and don't vote on it. It's only one week.

I see almost unanimous excitement about it. I look forward to voting on it.

Actually the stop-and-rotate thingie was done years before the Matrix was released, I believe in 1990 or 1991. It was a martial arts movie, but never made it to the US and didnt do too well as some though the special effects were too kookie for that time. Then after the Matrix was a big success that little unknown martial arts movie was re-released and made it to the US movie theaters, but it still did not do too well in the US. I cant even remember the name of it.

But I do think the same guy did the special effects for both movies.

Yeah I am being vocal and I do plan on voting and also submitting, how dare you tell me what to do about it and as for being so much excitement if you look in the threads there are others who feel very cheated and left out by this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why couldn't it have been a challenge about recent movies why single out one movie, and why should it be a violent movie with a R Rating?

Last time I looked there were a few people who are actively competing and voting that are simply too young to have seen this movie let alone comprehend it...is it fair they are so left out because someone didn't take into account the age restriction on the movie?

There have been numerous challenge suggestions in recent weeks that have gone almost completely ignored...so why pick something that actually discriminates against the youth?

The fact that someone is under 18 is no excuse for not reading about it on websites or even asking your parents about it. Is there an age minimum on creativity? Surely all these people you are speaking for can take a photo of what the idea of the Matrix means to the them, even if it is a pair of sunglasses.

Why you ask? Because you don't determine the challenges, neither do I. It isn't a complete democracy here, as you can agree. If you feel your rights as an internet user, and those under the age of 18, are being violated, my suggestion is to PM the folks that run this site. It is worth mentioning, however, that the challenge is an Open Challenge. So if there should be a hubub about a challenge, it should be on Member Challenges since it is the members that actually make a monetary contribution.

I recall even vegetarians found a way to participate in the Got Milk challenge. And they did it without as much noise. Don't get so defensive... I wasn't attacking you. I was just voicing my opinion, which you have been doing all over these threads.

Relax. Breathe in... hold it.... hooooold it.... exhale. Ah!

for everyone who has seen, hasn't seen, understands or not, here is an very interesting article on the matrix that might give some fun ideas for photos, and how open this challenge will be for creativity.

As opposed to Saving Private Ryan? Or maybe I'm not understanding why *that* violent R-rated movie was brought out as an example of better violence in the other thread.

Maybe you could provide the site owners with a list of challenges that would be acceptable to you, and they could just pick from that list. Sounds pretty silly, doesn't it? Yeesh, I thought the transportation challenge was a boring-as-heck idea, but I didn't go around protesting about how many deaths are caused by car accidents and the fact that young people aren't allowed to have driver's licenses and therefore might not be able to fully relate to transportation. Relax, it's supposed to be FUN! If you don't like the idea, just don't play this week!

As an underwater photographer, I think the next challenge should be on the soon to be released movie Finding Nemo.

Kids can see it, it's not violent (unless you take into account the sharks), and it looks so darn cute!!!

I didn't see the Matrix, don't plan on renting the video OR seeing the new Matrix movie. Won't be submitting or voting in this challenge because I don't have a clue what the movie is about and I don't feel like doing hours of research just to understand a challenge.

I've seen photographers go to pretty great lengths to get a shot. this to me just seems like yet another bit of "acrobatics" to get a great photo! :)

it's (the matrix reloaded) actually rated AA here in canada (parental accompaniement under 14) .. i actually find it odd that the US has a higher rating for this movie than us canadians :)
05/15/2003 09:03:56 AM · #23
that's because it takes more in canada for a movie to have an R rating. The laws are more lenient on stuff like censoring in movies and on tv.... which is why we have uncensored Osbournes (not that I watch it..)

Higher nipple quotient in the second one, probably why its an R in the US.
