I guess my feelings were hurt not that they didn't like my work or gave me a low score, but that they said I wasnt creative. I posted before I thought about it so I withdraw my post... I cant get offeneded everytime some one says something mean... I dont need them to valdate who I am. I do not take pictures for them I do it for myself so I will not let the comment bother me

Can this wait till the challenge is over? Just be identifying it as a humorous shot could have a backlash effect on the voting of other peoples shots as well.

I agree louddog. I'm an expert on getting low scores :) and I would LOVE to get more comments that tell why they are scoring low instead of the "I didn't like it".
But, in defense, this person could've pointed out something specific they would want changed or something they liked otherwise to make it more constructive. I'm not sure people have a right to say they hated it and not give a suggestion for improvement (unless it is indeed a REALLY dredful photograph).
But, overall, critizm isn't something to get offended about- it's to learn from. You can NEVER please everyone!

I didn't find anything rude or offensive about the comment actually. True it would have helped to offer a suggestion on how to improve, but even then if you read between the lines, I think they did offer that up as well.

Sometimes the truth hurts and you have to take what you can from it to grow and learn.

We are so connected with the photos we take that it is hard to separate ourselves from that to see someone elses point of view regardless of how bluntly the comment is made.

It's easy to say what we don't like. The hardest part is saying why and what we think could be changed. A lot of the time we don't know.

The comment did not tell you you were not creative. Where are you getting that? I think you are taking the comment the wrong way. They Said that there was no creativity toward the challenge. Big difference.

The hardest lesson I had to learn, was that it doesn't matter what I think of a photo, if the customer doesn't like it I don't eat..

Of course unless you are just a hobbist..

Now that's the spirit. It’s hard at first to take real constructive criticism of your work, take from the comment what you can and move on.

... but that's just it. If we want to improve we have to take pretty much everything then separate the wheat from the chaf. If a comment is not helpful (to you) then move on to the next.

What may help is to set it aside (ignore) for a while and then go back and read it. You'd be surprised at what you can glean from comments when you read them again after a while. Of course, some will never make sense to you but some will be forehead slappers.

I think this is the third time you've changed your original comment, which now makes the entire thread not make sense...but I think your most recent comment is a good way to look at it, and I still don't think they said you were not creative.

on my current entry i think i've got one of the silliest comments i've ever had; it's basically a 64 word comment about how she will not be leaving a comment. surely it's more economic to not leave a comment?

what's weird is that i had a look at her comments she's left in the past (more than 400 odd), and they're all pretty decent, relevant and fairly helpful. i am somewhat bewildered.

If someone truly takes pics for himself/herself I wonder why there would be a need to enter competitive photographic challenges.

Leaving comments is an art. Many or most of the first two hundred I left were a complete waste. On a good day maybe half of what I leave will be any good. And I try to be helpful. Sometimes though, a photo pushes a button, or I'm feeling tired, or I reveal tha I do not have the artistic training or experience to appreciate a special approach or effect, or I space out, or some veil of sheer meanness descends over me and I leave bad or unhelpful comments. But even when I try to leave helpful comments I find there are photographers who find my observations beneath them - sometimes even when my observations parallel ones other commentators make.

If a commentator were to say "you are an idiot for taking this photo" I would take offense. But if he said "you are an idiot for taking this photo because ... photos of stuffed animals are ugly and annoying and everyone knows this but you" I would have learned a little. And I would be grateful. Annoyed, but grateful. If a person were to complain that I was not creative, I would have to ask myself what I needed to change in the way I take photos to change this perspective. A visit to his profile might help. Or some more looking around the site.

Good Luck

this topic is uncreative

In my opinion, when you submit your photo you are accepting that you will get high votes, low votes, and everything inbetween. The same goes for comments. Not everyone likes the photos that finish in the top ten, and not everyone hates the photos that finish in the bottom ten. Personally I would rather get a comment saying that my PS skills are poor or that my challenge idea is uninspired rather than a comment that merely says "I like it"

Very well said!

photoholic - I did the same thing as you-posted about a comment. I regret it now but do understand how a comment can get to you and you have a knee jerk reaction! You tried to right the situation so well done. Like me I think you will have learnt a lesson from the response here.

So everyone, please lay off of him - I think he's got the message.

Him is really a her...
I don't disagree that she has gotten the message, but isn't everyone entitled to their opinion and to share that opinion?

Also, the majority of the posts of late seem to be sharing feelings and expressions about voting/commenting rather than going after her for posting this topic.

You know, I must be special. I get consistently low scores and everyone is kind enough to beat me up regularly as needed. I get plenty of feedback, often unkind, that tells me exactly what I'm not doing right.

Honestly I'm grateful for the truth when it hurts. It's one of the reasons I ponied up and bought in to DPC. I know I'm no pro, but I also know I'm gonna learn something.

To my point:
I have a degree in English literature and so I joined a writing site. And while I'm a better writer than photographer (grammar and style in this post notwithstanding) I get so much more from the folks here who take the time to comment honestly and help me to be better.

You really ought to just read the comment...chill....then take a look at the poster's profile....you may get some insight into the comment and the commentor....if not you might find some really great images that will make you forget the comment.

My apologies photoholic - should read profiles before posting! At least it shows I'm not just sympathetic to fellow ladies!

tfaust - thank you for putting me right and I agree we all have a right to opinions and I'm the last one to deny that. It's just I know this has been discussed at length in threads and I know how when you start something like this you tend to feel each comment is aimed at you.

Off the thread but where did you find a writing site? Really interested in this!
