"Ew..." That's it, their full comment. My submission this week is not my best work and probably deserves the score that it is getting. I can even tolerate the fact that some people might just hate it. But come on! It is trash for crying out loud. A person giving a score of 1 or 2 with a comment like "Ew..." on a photo that is thecnicaly proficient and fits the theme of the challenge deserves to be publicly chastised. Shame on you! If ever there were an arguement for a catagorized voteing system, this is it.

Non-anonymous voting is the answer in my opinion. We should all own the scores we give. At least in this case, you will be able to see who left the comment after the contest ends.

it says Comment --- not Critique

if that's their comment, so be it -- they thought "ew" -- a comment can be whatever they want it to be

if it did say 'critique', then you'd have a valid rant -- but it doesn't, so you don't :)

Here is the version I got. "Ewww, gross. good job!"

That comment might be about the subject and not the quality of the photo. A complement even. lol

"Ew" doesn't necessarily mean that they gave you a 1 or 2 either (unless of course they stated that in the message, in which case I'm guessing you would have specified whether it was a 1 or a 2)... I agree with aelith -- it's just as likely to be a compliment as a critique in this challenge. I wouldn't read too much into it :)

The word is "rant" not "reason" so I don't need to be valid, I just need to be irritated. I agree that we can say almost anything that we want in terms of comments, but that does not mean that we are necessarly excused of responsibility for being dull, vapid, or just plain vocabulary challenged.

I left an "Ewww, gross. Good job!" comment on one pic. I don't know if it was yours, don't know what pic is yours. It was a compliment for whomever's pic it was. This is garbage! I also gave a good score. So your right, a compliment:)

so in other words, it's not the meaning of the "ew" you object to?

you'd be happier if they said As I gaze upon your entry, I can't help but shudder, as my eyes should feel like my feet if my shoes had snails in them...

Had I gotten that version I'd have certainly taken it as a compliment! All I got was an "Ew..." and a drop in score equivalent to a vote of 1. A couple of extra words can make a big difference.
Being subjective when voting is part of what we have to do. But the subject is garbage, trash, waste... Isn't it possible to be subjective within a context? To a certain degree I'd think that the "Ew" factor in this challenge should be a positive.Guess I got it wrong.

I couldn't help noticing how many of the pictures in this weeks challenge were total garbage - and I have commented to that effect :)
10/10/2002 09:01:51 AM · #16
this site seems to me to be about both learning how to shoot great pictures, and learning how to give and accept criticism. you can't really expect everybody who participates to be insightful and articulate judges, any more than you could expect everybody to take a 10-point shot every week.
you shouldn't take it personally if you get a low score, or if the comment you receive aren't the most astute observations ever. it's understood that everybody's practicing. because this is just for fun, we can all be honest, sharing whatever it is a photo makes us feel, even if it's something as simple as "Ew."
in the real world, where an editor stands between a photographer and his paycheck, working folks are lucky to get any explanation as to why one shot was used over another, or whose crazy taste it was that decided to go with a picture or not. "Ew" beats the cold comfort of a rejection slip.
we don't need to change the voting system, and no matter how many convoluted voting systems people come up with, there's always gonna be a jerky who comes wandering in and says something like "Ew." I for one enjoy all the comments, good bad and ugly; the range of responses and opinions here is still better than any of us could get on our own in the non-internet world. relax, enjoy this site for what it is, feel free to comment or post whatever you like.

Johnny, really , REALLY, hate it when I'm in the middle of a good bitch session and someone comes along and tries to be reasonable. Of course you are right. But that is not nearly as fun as stomping around with a bad attitude and argueing with Spiderman.
10/10/2002 01:55:52 PM · #18
I agree Johnny. All comments are welcome. I have been tickled this week, though, by those who think my subject matter is not garbage, and I can't wait to find out what they do this their "insert appropriate disgusting item here".

wink,

i was happy to just let this thread die a lonely death

i've received the occasional "ew" or "huh?", and while those comments didn't do anything for me, they didn't do anything to me either

however, i just got a comment that makes absolutely NO SENSE

at least i could see the reasoning behind the "ew" and the "huh" when viewed in the context of the picture, and i let them go

but the one word comment - "REGULAR" - i have no freakin' idea what that is supposed to mean

could it be that the picture is just "ordinary" ??? maybe, but not any more so than 80% of the rest of the entries this week

could it be a "cute" commentary about the subject of the photo? again, maybe, but that's an EXTREME stretch - especially with just that one word

i believe that this is the comment that will get me to track down the author and ask them, in a much more civilized manner, WTF ??

now if you'll excuse me ... AUGGHH!!!!

I got the following comment this evening: PIZZA

There's no reference, however remotely, to pizza in my submission.

Yah, it is really the comments that have helped me to get where I am today! :)

yes, that's it!

someone gets REALLY confused when trying to do more than one thing at a time

apparently, when he/she was voting on our two entries, they were also ordering a REGULAR PIZZA

i wonder what the Dominos clerk thought about the phone call that said "Not enough DOF but good use of the Rule of Thirds" ???

IT WAS MEEE! No, not really, but I thought I'd say that anyway. Seems every time someone is talking about the comments, someone steps in and defends the comment, but no one is defending these, I wonder why?? LOL I wouldn't claim them either. I found that sometimes when I get a really silly comment that is short and well...less that sweet, that it is usually from Zimbabwe, or Mozambique and well...we just don't speak the same language. I supose it goes the other way around too. When we say. "IMO your DOF is way OOF and FWIW i like the RES." And they speak French. :)
My favorite comment related "goof" (and I don't remember who did it now) was not on my photo, but the photographer had written the title in german, and so the commenter commented in german. When the challenge was all said and done...the photographer was like "I don't speak German!". LOL Kind of a reverse on the topic, but funny none the less.
So...TK and UL HAGN. TTFN.

I really love this site but it´s sad not to be able to take part in all the forum discussions because you use a language that is unknown to the rest of the world. I´m from Sweden and all I have is my school-english to lean back on. And that isn´t good enough. But I hang on and learn a little bit more every day.
