My Nikon Coolpix 775 is sick. When I turn in on the display screen just says "system Error" Any one have an idea what might be the problem? Or do I just need to send it to Nikon for service. I have only taken about 11,000 pictures with it. Ha! Or does anyone know of a service center other that Nikon?

You may be able to download the firmware for it from Nikon and reload it. Not sure on that one (check the Nikon site or the book), but my Nikon 5700 I am able to check the firmware by holding down the Menu button and turning it on at the same time. This is how I upgraded the firmware also (after it was loaded onto the camera/CF card). Worth the shot

Sorry to hear about your camera ills... that's a bummer for sure.

I can't imagine what the problem might be, but you could always try (if you havn't already) removing the batteries and leaving the camera to sit for a few days. Then put in some freshly charged batteries and see what happens. The idea is get the camera fully discharged of power so that it is forced to reload its OS when it gets power back. The problem is that most digicams can hold "some" charge for a while, even without a battery present. Seems they have an internal battery that holds info in memory like the date and time, etc...

Given you current situation it might be worth a try.

Thanks Dacrazyrn, I held the menu button down, turned it on and it at least started working again, but it seems like it is having a difficult time opening the lens deal on the front. It worked for a few shots and then hung up again with the error message.

I had already tried taking the battery out for a day.

Any more thoughts. Tempted to put WD-40 on it. seems like that would help it open smother. HA!

Is there firmware you can reload? Or an update?
Firmware version 1.4. Updated on May 31, 2002. Probably not hurt to reload if you already have it.

Anything can be fixed with WD-40, a paperclip, and some chewing gum.

seriously, do you have a DC adapter for it? I had a 995 with a battery problem (similar error message) and it worked fine with the DC, which is how i figured out that the battery had built up a memory...new batteries for that cam are about $20 on eBay.

good luck.
