I am soooo excited about this one. I was not even considering entering as there are so many great macro photographers here that I no I cannot compete with them in. But, then I decided that I should at least try to get a decent shot as it'll be good practice. Well, I got what I feel is my best entry yet. Heck I may get past the 5's on this one! Yeah !!!!!

Hope I have not jinxed myself now.

That's pretty much the spirit I've entered the Macro challenge with too. I was surprised cause I think I managed to come up with a really nice shot...or at least a shot that I'm proud of. But, like you, I've seen the INCREDIBLE work that so many photogs have done on this site with macros. So I'm not hoping for a high score, but it was nice to take a picture that I'm so pleased with.

even if I don't get the scores i am hoping for, I will still be happy as this pic just makes me smile. I feel good just knowing I took the pic and I like it.

This site gets credit too as I have been learning so much since I joined 2 months ago. I have been seeing improvements in my images as a result of reading the tutorials and forums. Thanks to all here who share their knowledge!

Don't know if they will consider mine as a macro or a closeup, but I think it's a cool pic and that's what matters.

Titia - according to the challenge it can be a macro or a close-up. The SC realizes not everyone here has the capabaility of shooting true macro.
Good luck with your entry

Good luck Linda...
I'll try and rattle of an entry this weekend. I hope that the sun shows itself, cause I will probably go for the 'classic' (aka cliched) insect shot! LOL

The SC realizes that, but do the voters ;-)

Good luck everyone!

Well. . .y'all have inspired me. I didn't really even think of entering this challenge because I don't have a macro lens, and I have SEEN some of the macro talent here. But hmmmmmmmm. . . .if the voters really do keep in mind that the challenge states that it doesn't have to be a true macro, maybe we will have a chance to be competitive with a really good close-up.. . . .maybe.

what's the line between a "close-up" and a "macro"?

A macro is defined as 1:1 or more magnification....

I am torn.

I have a traditional macro shot which IMO is well executed, with good color, saturation and sharpness and a moderately interesting subject. Not exactly a bug couple with a bug baby at the flea circus but moderately interesting. Probably a six-ish shot.

And I have a non-traditional macro shot with great clarity, vibrant colors, great saturation but with a subject folks might not resonate with. Coupled with the title (whch does not contain the word Macro or or the Roman numeral V), it has a humorous element. Probably a four-ish shot but just possibly a seven-ish shot.

Which to enter? Still looking at other ideas but boy am I torn!

I say go with the 2nd. If not, you'll always wonder. You know what's safe, but sometimes out of the box can really create some raves. Good luck.

If you want to live up to my example, go with the shot you love and damn the voters.

That's what I'm doiing in this challenge, btw; I've already entered, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I'm doomed, but damn I love my shot and it deserves its moment in the sun.

Ok, thanks. I'm just curious, I'm rather fond of it myself and therefor I really don't care how the voters will vote it.

WHAT sun? This has been the coldest summer on Cape Cod in living memory. I don't think we're even gonna get any tomatoes. The damned shot was done in the KITCHEN....

Heh, I do shots in the kitchen cause it's so @$%^$~~! hot here, that I don't want to venture outside. Want some Texas temperatures? It was only 102 today. UGH

I'm excited about my macro too. It's not the inside of a gnat's behind with a drop of water, but I truly think it'll be my best ever. Maybe I'll inch up to a 6!!!!

Hey Judy! We finally cooled off to about 92 or so today LOL Know exactly what you mean about those 100+ temps. We get them too :(

I entered this and I like my pix. It's close, it's colorful, but no way I will get close to winning, not even a 6. Hey, I'll be lucky to get 5 - that's how it is here. One of those bug eye shots will get it.

I have stopped worrying about the scores. As long I still have fun doing this and keep improving, then this whole thing has achieved its goal :)

I was pumped for the challenge since I had a Sigma 105mm macro lens on the way, purchased two days before challenge announcement. But guess what? B&H took their g.d. time shipping it out and it didn't make it here. Today is a national holiday in Canada, so no mail delivery. So when am I gonna get the lens? Probably Monday...
07/01/2005 11:10:12 PM · #22
Well, we have humidity as high as the temps some days. It's like walking into a hot swamp.

But we don't freeze our rear ends off in winter either, so I shouldn't complain. When it's April and the NE is still suffering from snow, I' in my shorts@@@

Can't wait to see the macro challenge entries!!

I ended up shooting something I liked better. So I'll post my previous choice as an out take. What score would your have given it in Macro V? What comments would you have made?

I like it a lot because it's not your usual macro and I like creativity! It's a strong 7 or 8 for me.

07/02/2005 07:10:33 AM · #25
me too, thinking so many people are gonna enter the usual bug shots etc, i tried something different myself (well new for me, and somethings i've always wanted to start experimenting with).

A step up in quality for me too, my previous challenge entries were sub standard and I hadn't spent a lot of time on the actual images I submitted.

This one, although a spur of the moment shot, had a little more thought/design to it - I hope you all like it :-)
