Flowers. Bugs.

Can we have a macro Challenge without them?

I throw down the gauntlet and challenge DPC'rs to be original in their subject for this one.

We had a challenge minus flowers + bugs most recently. It's summer in the northern hemisphere, capitalise, I say!

You're whistling in the wind;)

We had a challenge called "Macros without Flowers and Bugs".

I understand if you don't want to see such images, but why do we so often try to limit in the forums of public opinion (which affects voting) what people can do within the bounds of a challenge.

Good luck. There will still be lots of flowers and bugs. And bugs on flowers. There will be some original shots though, and they will score higher - in general - but look for a fantastic bug shot to win!

the problem is ... a bug is going to win ... and the desire to win usually overrides the need to be original.

it's sad, but it's true

Some of us have the luxury of having no realistic chance of winning.

So I'll say now, I won't take a picture of a bug. Or a flower. :-)

You need to tell the voters that because most people cater to the whims of what will score well and an extreme close-up of a bug usually does very well indeed.

I know, I´ll just take an original macro shot of an apple and kick all of your asses!

Now you tell us! I just got back from an all night photo excursion and got a brilliant shot of a rare red-headed praying mantis on top of a blue orchid that only blooms once in every 75 years. I guess I should go find some nails or m&m's or something. Geesh! :-(

Also, a good macro subject has to have a lot of detail when you get close to it, otherwise it becomes an abstract or just boring. Bugs simply have a lot to look at when you get close to them - stuff you can't usually see - so of course they're going to score well.

Why can't a macro be an abstract?

It seems that you've already discounted abstracts before looking at any.

Anyway, I'd rather shoot for myself than trying to guess what the voters will approve of en masse.

I haven't discounted anything, I just know from experience how abstracts usually do. And yes, I think you should shoot for you, not for anyone else.

I didn't say I'd vote low on these, just that I'll choose another subject. I think photos like this are great captures.

I second that, I'm out looking for something different and unique as well.

How cruel! This challenge comes right after I buy my macro lens, but while my camera is still broken! :(

It'll be a joy to see the entries in this challenge, though - macro always fascinates me.

I probably won't enter this one. I don't have enough of a zoom to get the detail that people like. I'm curious to see how original people can be. I'm not totally tired of flowers, but I hope more people are imaginative with their entries.

Bugs are common ideas, but I would never vote them down. Shooting a bug macro is easy. Doing it really WELL is pretty tough. It's not often they sit perfectly still, in a well lit area and in an environment with no wind so you can use a smaller aperature. It's tough work to pull a great one off.

Darn.. this thread disappointed me.. I thought maybe the "We need original ideas this time" was about the challenge topics themselves..

as in..

STOP WITH THE TIRED OLD REHASHING ALREADY!!!

I'm tired of "Challenge Name I-IX"

however, to my chagrin, the thread is only about "blah blah blah no bugs and flowers" again :)

I am going to go out of the box...and do a macro from a bug or flower point of view +)
