I wanted a lighting system but could not afford the real thing so I made one...for $80.00 so what do you think? The first piece is acrylic light cover, the second is a piece of sheet metal....The first pic is with the acrilic the second is the metal.

BigR, I like the first one only because I can see all of her. I can tell there is something in the backround but only if I look real hard. The second one is too dark and hides most of her face, but then if you want that effect, then, your right on. But definately the 1st one for me.....

I have a homemade infinityboard where i take all my auction photos. I'll post images. Should take about 15min.. i'll edit em on this post

Basically what i have, is a 1€ white cardboard taped to my table. There's this ceiling-like thing above, that i have covered in glossy poster paper for reflection.

Quick snap of my film slr using the contraption

Budget: around 15e (1e for the cardboard, 2e for duct tape and 2x 6.50e for the 350W halogens

EDIT: I know, the photo of the SLR is kinda crappy, the focus is in the wrong place and there's a helluvalot of barrel distortion. Just took a fast example picture using the system.

I use pro lighting in my industry on a daily basis.

I always have been an advocate of the local hardware store (Home Depot) as the poor man lighting source.

There are threads available for you to check out about how to build softboxes at home.

Remember also, quartz lights are just one option. There is flouresents, and tungsten as well. Pay attention to the Kelvin as well, or you will get some color variations you did not count on.

Dimming your lights will give some flexability if are handy with wiring. The light will look warmer hence changing the Kelvin.

Diffusion is another thing to consider. Wire, net, and paper are the common diffusers. If using paper, make sure it is of highquality, not flamable, or meltable stuff. Newspaper works good with lower wattage lights (500 watts down), just make sure that the paper does not touch the globe or there may be fire.

Bouncing light like you did is good, I don't know exactly what it is you are using, but at your local art store they sell black/white foam core in 4x8 sheets that you can cut up, or use whole. B/W art card is good too, and any white foam insulation at the hardware store works good too.

Good luck.

Not the one that I was looking for but...

Homemade Softbox

ED: I will just keep adding them here.

Video for making a Softbox on this page.

This is more of a lightbox but I'm adding so I can come back to it.

I am all about photography on a budget and have used natural outdoor lighting for most of portrait work..these were all done on my patio with a simple backdrop (ie: old tablecloth)
