Multi-image composition:
highest: 7.621
6.5 would make it to 20th

Fauna:
highest: 7.557
6.5 would make it to 37th

Flora:
highest: 7.326
6.5 would make it to 14th

Weather:
highest: 7.568
6.5 would make it to 19th

Candy:
highest: 7.458 (only one above 7 though)
6.5 would make it to 7th

Practical Jokes:
highest: 7.061
6.5 would make it to 6th

Pi:
highest: 7.554
6.5 would make it to 8th

...so it's a fairly recent trend. Has anyone else noticed this?

Nice Summary. I think the quality of pics is getting better. Not that the previous winners' photos weren't top notch, but every week there are at least 20-30 that are truly awesome. It makes voting a lot more pleasant.

I don't think it's a trend. Usually the challenges that are easier to interpret (ie fauna) get higher scores overall and the ones that are harder (ie Pi) get lower.

maybe the pics are getting better... and they should be... after all, we keep practicing and learning... getter better is a natural progression :o)

I don't really see a trend in terms of scores. but I have noticed that the postcard shots are generally much better than previous submissions' photos. I hope that means we're getting better!

Actually, as we see DPC expand and have more images and more people voting, I would expect to see scores drop slightly as the voting base becomes wider and more divergent.

OR as we all improve, we begin to better perceive the good qualities of the images and so scores will get better.

OR....

Well I guess there would be break in this trend after we see the results of the postcard challenge. The average quality of most of the postcards is very good ( better than many challenges) but there are very few that are exceptionally good.

Well I may be wrong!!

What does everyone think of the photos in the transportation challenge? I found them to be a little more mediocre than some of the other challenges.
05/05/2003 10:27:23 AM · #8
I agree with that. It made me wonder, since I have a pretty good score so far I was wondering how a 6.5 (not my current score though!) can be everything from 5th to 35th place...

Maybe that's nothing new.

I know my scores are going up a little--for a couple of challenges now, I've actually scores solidly in the 5's. At first, I dreamed of 5's, then for a couple of weeks I saw images teeter in the 4.995-5.005 range, now I've got a couple that actually saw 5.2. That's a real solid 5 score. Next goal: a 5.5. That would be great. My current score in the postcard challenge is close, but not quite there. Gonna need a couple of high votes...

A 6.5 score would've gotten you 5th place in the "Time" challenge. That wasn't very long ago.

StevePax, don't worry too much about that score even though we're human and we all have barriers we would like to cross in the scores dept :)
When i did the transportation challenge, i had a number of different takes to pursue. The direction i couldn't help taking, moved me more away from transportation and more towards what had 'meaning' to me. Judging from the comments some people caught on to that. Then this morning i received this wonderful comment and it said exactly 100% of what i tried to do. That comment made my day (and that for the Monday blahs). It's the old question, do you make pictures for the voters or for yourself. Right now, i am up to my eyeballs in the learning curve and don't have the ability to put on a dpc hat for some pictures and my own hat for all others and am not sure i even want to acquire that ability. I just want to get better, not to please dpc voters but just for myself.

And sagestudio, you made my day as well! :)

I think people are afraid to give out low Votes, because they get hazed if they do.
05/05/2003 04:04:31 PM · #13
hazed? is how you voted posted or is that private? i havent read many of the forums but i havent seen any comments "hazing" people who voted low. as long as you can back up why you voted a certain way then you should vote however you want ...high or low.

This is from another thread. After explaining why I gave a low vote I got this reply...
--------------------------------------------------

...That is why I scored both your photos low.

You score alot low, Fiver. What is your average vote cast?

But they did put that smiley in there... The comments are not private. People ask for comments when we give them low votes. Why? I don't want to single out this person, since we have not butted heads since, but I don't usually comment on Photos I give low scores to anymore...

I'd second that. If you compare the standard of pics in very early challenges to those being produced now, I think the (general) standard has rocketed. And I say that in a very broad sense - I don't mean to belittle the achievements of anyone who placed high in an earlier challenge.

I'm not conscious of awarding higher or lower votes week to week, but I always give a photo what I think it deserves (honest!). If the average vote is going up, it's because the standard is...

My personal scale:
10: Blows me away, both as an image and in putting the challenge topic in the starring role.
9: Like it a lot, but doesn't quite make the top tier of 1-5 pictures in the challenge, to me.
8: Fits the theme well (to my mind), and there's something about the image that I like: composition, idea, general feel. It feels 'right,' an interesting image, not just an 'ad shot' or a 'snapshot' feel.
7: Fits the theme well enough (to my mind), no 'eew' flaws in the picture, but nothing that particularly catches my eye either.
5-6: Doesn't *quite* fit the theme, IMHO, and/or there's something annoyingly wrong with what would otherwise be a good image (blurry focus, too dark to make out, cropped so close one can't see what's going on, etc).
3-4: Doesn't fit the theme at all in my mind, or gives something else the starring role in the image, with the theme element just thrown in carelessly, but otherwise might get a 6-9 on 'quality of shot.'
1-2: Something badly wrong with the shot, visually. Very blurred, pixelated, incoherent compositionally, impossible to tell what it's meant to be.

That said, I do give out a lot of seven-and-ups. Mainly because, well, they deserve it. Nearly half the images of any given challenge I've graded so far get 8 or up from me. Because of this I'm careful with my 9s and downright stingy with the 10s. It has to blow me away, feel right, and just click somehow, for me to 10 it.
