2/3rds the way through a rugby match my drebel just stopped AF! I'd been using it all day at the junior rugby this morning, no probs....this happened at the afternoon match. I tried turning off and back on, no luck.

I've been careful not to get it wet but the case has gotten pretty wet at times. In case it's humidity I've got it sitting (without memorycard/battery) on the hot water cylinder.

It's trying to focus but just can't do it. Doesn't matter what mode/lens. I can MF but that didn't help much with the rugby. Any ideas??????

I'm trying not to panic but it's not working! Camera is 1 yr and 1 week old......but the shop says that Canon would honour the warranty ......probably!

Sue, get some Isopropal Alcohol and a cotton bud and clean the gold contacts on both the lens and body, that may help.Btw stupid question you haven't set it to manual focus ?

That was my first thought too Nick.....checked incase I'd accidently reset but I hadn't :(

Where do I get Isopropal Alcohol?

Have you tried some basic diagnostic stuff like removing batteries, cleaning contacts, trying a different focus point selection, etc? Have you installed the hacked firmware? It allows you to select an autofocus mode (one shot, ai, servo). Have you tried using some of the basic modes or a different creative mode? I hope Canon takes care of you because that's where it seems to be going. Good luck.

I've removed the battery, tried the different focus point selection, also tried the different modes. Not yet cleaned the contacts, I think that's what Nick was talking about. Haven't installed any of the hacked firmware......actually haven't installed any firmware at all.

Use 70%, but not the stronger stuff. I think there's 90% too.

Is there anything else I can use to clean the contacts? Don't have the Isopropal Alcohol.

No rubbing alcohol in the first aid kit? It's the same thing if you read the ingredients. Just make sure that's all it contains.

Any Pharmacy should have it,. The tech at Minolta said a large proportion of repairs are normally only dirty contacts .

Sue, not trying to rain on your parade butin the worse case scenario, which happened on my film Minolta is a rain drop (s) ran down the stem of a command dial onto the electronics. Because of the resulting vertigris (rusty stuff) the sevice cost about $150. Another cause also worst case is a small plastic wire computer connection has failed I had that as well.the part is about$25 plus labour.Andrew at Phototronic Services is a Great guy, they are Minolta service agents, but do sell canon digital, If repairs are needed give him a ring (06) 358 9085. they are on Broadway in Palmerston North .

camera's going back to Canon for repairs, wasn't the contacts.

Went out today to the sports grounds with the Sony717 to see how that's going to work. D'ya reckon they'll mind me being in the middle of the field so I can get close enuff? Gonna ask them to do the tackles a bit slower, and redo them if the shutter lag creates a problem. I'm sure they won't mind!

At least I have the Sony 717 to fall back on .....for that I'm counting my lucky stars........while I weep

Thanks Brad. Didn't realise how attached I could get to something non-living till I walked away from it in the shop today!

Could it be the lens? Have you tried another lens to determine this?
06/26/2005 12:55:39 AM · #17
Tried that yesturday John. Put the kit lens back on and didn't make a difference. We tried again in the shop today with a lens off one of the new cameras. None of the guys at the shop could figure out what is going on as everything in the camera looked fine, clean and in the right place. It just doesn't work!

Does rebel have a manual/auto switch on the body by chance? On d70, if the switch on the body is set to manual it's not going to af regardless of what the switch on the lens is set to... i had it accidentally switch to manual once, when the camera was in the backpack. Thought it could be something simple like that in your case too.

Did you recharge the batteries at any time during the day? AF will stop working when battery charge is low. You can still take pics in MF but there isn't enough charge to power the USM.

d, who has this happen when she forgets... :)

Thanks for the thought.....but that one was one of the first I checked incase I'd had a blond moment and reset it.

Camera's back :)))))) They dismantled the body and replaced the sub mirror stopper and worn shutter release switch. Working again!!! WooHoooooo!!

I'm a bit pleased you might have guessed!

Congrats. Curious (hopefully not too nosy) how much repairs like that cost.

I wondered also whether the constant "holding" of the shutter release half way contributes to the wear.

Glad you're back in action!

Not sure of the cost cos my to my delight they honoured the warranty even though it was a week over the expiry date.

Think you could be right about the shutter. Bit scarey to think I wore it out in 12 months!

Well, here's a Hooray!! for Canon!

The D-Rebel is only rated to about 50,000 shutter actuations. How many shots did you have?
