Hi all. I'm headed to Pikes Peak International Hill climb this weekend and I'm planning on taking some shots of the action. I haven't taken that many motorsport shots before and I was hoping some of you more experienced folks could provide me with some tips/tricks. I particularly like the shots I've seen of cars where the wheels are blurred but the car itself is in focus. I assume this is done by choosing a slower shutter speed and panning, but what sort of shutter speed is normally slow enough to produce this effect?

If anyone has any other little tricks they can think of, feel free to give them to me.

This thread was very helpful to me a few weeks ago.

Thanks, I'm in communication with the company that does all the official photography for that track and others...it seems they may be interested in my work.

I really hope this leads to some opportunities to shoot more races and sell some photos as well!

Well here are a couple of my efforts from my visit to Pikes Peak on the weekend. My first ever motorsport shots.

Learnt a bit. Next time I'll listen to the advice from the board and bump up my ISO. I kept it at 100 and ended up with a lot shots with only part of the car in focus due to having to use a larger aperture to maintain the 1/100th of second exposure I wanted.

I'll resurrect this thread to ask my questions. I just got the Sony A100 with the DT 18-70 3.5-5.6 and the 75-300 4.5-5.6 standard Sony lenses and I have 2 requests for help.

Firstly, in what I am sure is a noob question, but I want to ask anyway, the aperture range listed, those are just minimum values, right? In camera I can take the 18-70 up to maximums from F22-F36 depending on zoom.

Secondly, the V8 Supercars are coming to town and I would like to get some good photos there, I've shot at the track before so I know where the good spots are - if you can get through the crowd to get them - my question is, what sort of settings should I use and should I use manual mode only?

Thanks for your time.

Bump . . . anyone?

which track are the V8's on at?

ads :o)

edit: re the apertures... the smallest number is actually the maximum aperture setting, in other words (and in laymans terms), its the point where the opening is at its biggest, therefore is at its maximum.

i shoot in manual mode when i cover motorsport. i stop down using the aperture as much as possible, usually landing somewhere around F16 - F22 with a shutter speed that sits around 1/250 - 1/320. thats at phillip island usually though, where the light is pretty extreme (i would describe it as volatile actually!), and of course with motorsport probably the most critical detail is getting the livery nice and clear.

there is no room for over exposure imho. i would rather under expose and adjust the levels in photoshop. shooting in manual mode isa bit tricky if the light changes a lot (cloudy day for example), but its worth getting used to it because you have the maximum control over your exposure.

all the best! ads :o)

Barbagallo, late March.

Thanks for that, I'll do my best and post results if they are any good. Hell, even if they aren't people can give suggestions on how they could have been improved. I plan on shooting in RAW because with 2x2GB cards, space ought not to be much of an issue and my sony alpha can do continuous 10 shots in raw without pausing. Or I can just do fine jpg and shoot however many I want. Probably do the raw though.

Settle Gretel, I shoot hopping animals, not running ones.
