Here is my photo for the darkness challenge.

All of the 35 comments that I received were very glowing and positive. The average vote of commenters was 8.75! I truly appreciate every single one of those comments, and would like to thank everyone who took the time to leave a comment. Everybody loves receiving positive comments, and I'm no exception!

Unfortunately, it's the negative comments that help you to improve, and I didn't get a single negative comment.

I would like to hear from some of the 65 voters who did not comment and voted this photo 5 or less. I'm honestly not angry or upset with these voters, but I just want some insight into what it was that you didn't like about the image, or what made you feel that it was just average. With that insight, I can improve my ability to create images that speak to a broader audience, not just the audience that already seems to like my photos.

Thanks.

I missed voting on this one in the challenge. I'm guessing I would've given it a 7 or 8.

Regarding comments - I firmly believe comments from those who score an image between 4 and 6 are the most valuable.

Maybe you need a cat or a flower in there somewhere?

Honestly, I'd have given it a 6 or 7 and couldn't think of anything to improve it.

Maybe a little better detail in the face? Maybe a different crop? I like it as is though.

For the most part, it's been proven time and time again that people don't like to leave anything less than stellar comments. It's just too much of a hassle when someone gets bent out of shape because they don't agree - only to call you out in front of everyone for public debate in the forums. It's simply not worth it.

I wish it wasn't this way, but it is.

ps ... that photo rules!

personally, I liked it and gave it a 7.

i liked it & gave it a 6
though it 'may' have been higher if it was cropped in closer
filling the frame a bit more ...

If any of the "low voters" is uncomfortable posting a response to this thread, please consider PM'ing me. I really am not trying to create a "public debate." I just want some feedback.

sorry, cant' help with your plea :). I gave it a 7 (which is high for me, I tend to grade on a narrow scale), loved the photo.

Left a comment. I didn't vote darkness, but would have scored this 8 or higher. Drama factor is huge. Personally, it would have been more effective than it already is with a closer crop to the head area. The negative black space on the left side dissipates the ooomphness. Still, a nice idea that was well executed.

To presume a bit, people who voted this 5 or less probably didn't like how it's not a "pretty" or cute image. I'd chalk it up as a compliment, and forget about trying to please them. Some of the daft-er ones probably voted it down because it had light on it, and in their minds it probably didn't fit the challenge theme.

"Too Dark", or not enough water droplets, or "where's the duck?".

I gave it a 7. Probably deserved better but there wasn't a sunset in the picture.

;)

What do you expect...No Duck! No Dramatic Sky! No Big Fancy Wordy Title! And no Cheesecake! You're lucky you got what you got!

However, I gave it a <7>. But that's just me...what do I know!?!?!?

I thought it was the best photo of the lot and voted it a solid, no questions asked 10! Only two 10 in this challenge from me. I don't think I left you a comment, but will do so soon. Great shot!

The other 10 fell to 185th. Communal Insomnia by Amber is stunning as well.

Gave ya an 8... cant help ya there....

I don't see how it is the negative comments that help you to improve necessarily..certainly if there are technical problems..but I can't see them here..didn't vote on this challenge..would have given a 9...it is one of the best that i have seen in this challenge, no question. So I think you can leave it as a matter of taste...you have a concept some people don't see, or it doesn't appeal to them..so what you learn is you can please everyone even when you nail one like you did. Congrats on the great shot.

i liked the photo just on its own...but put it into the challenge darkness and it rocks...scored you way abouve a 5

Since I’m new to DP, I’m still calibrating my voting system. I gave your photo a 3. I am not confident that it is the right score for my taste, perhaps a 5 or 6 is a more accurate measure of my opinion. Which brings up an important question. Should one try to vote “objectively”, based on criteria, or should one vote according to his or her personal taste? If we are too objective, our photography will become craft rather than art. We’ll all be trying to conform are images to a protocol of aesthetics. Instead, I think art should be an intensely personal expression. (With parameters of course). Anyway, I didn’t get excited initially at your photo because it seems too intentional and dramatic…too conceived rather than natural. Here were some of my picks. I like photos that have a raw quality while still having good technique.

Anyway, congrats on your placement. You have a great style and shouldn't change it just because there are people that might have a different way of looking at things.

I voted in that category, so here are my thoughts.
I think there is one thing that made this picture not score big with me. It tries almost too hard to meet the challenge. You see a man in the dark looking into the light, but it looks very much a set-up, it doesn't look natural, there is no emotion (at least it doesn't move me). The picture is dominated by the blackness and since it is b&w there is little to look at.

Other than that it is a competent photo, so I did not give it a very
low score.

I know the above perhaps does not sound (or even is!) coherent (or spelled correctly for that matter!), but there you are.

OTOH you scored way, way above me, so according to the DPC jury you are much better photograper than me. Not that I hold that against you ;)

Håkon (who's entry in metal is really bombing, even though I thought it my best by far).

This is good stuff. Thanks to everybody who posted so far! Especially the "negative" ones! Keep 'em coming!

I did not get to vote on this challenge but if I would have I would of given it a 7. I think there are a few factors in this challenge that pulled your score and a few others down. It is my feeling that a lot of votes was cast with monitors that were not calibrated very good on the dark end of the spectrum. I believe that can be seen in by the blue ribbon only receiving a 6.8+. Also you saved your picture at only 41K causing some jaggies in the light window. Not a problem to me but some people do deduct for even the smallest thing. Just my 2 cents.

Hi. It's probably not what you might expect but if you look at the distribution of votes you can't escape the impression that it is essentially some kind of statistical function, normal or not. Whilst the mean or median score reflects on the 'quality' of the image for an average viewer, the extreme values might not bear much useful information. Each one of those who voted less than five may have had a different reason or may have actually disliked what the rest of the voters appreciated.
It is nice shot though, pity I missed that challenge!
Cheers!

you got an 8 from me...
06/22/2005 04:49:38 PM · #22
I scored it a 9 dude... Sorry. (That sounds kinda weird!) I thought it was exceptionally well executed & presented! If I had to be picky, I'd probably suggest cropping off more of the left. That's the only thing I can think of...

I think that the photo doesn't 'grab' me and draw attention, making me want to stay and look at it. The asthetic appeal is not there, and it is fairly plain and simple. These are the things that I think are wrong with the photo. Didn't vote, but would've gave it a 6.

I gave it a 7. I thought the photo was technically good, but it didn't really "grab" me. I don't really know what that means though -- I reserve 9's and 10's for those that really strike me.

A comment I made on another image might apply to this one as well.. The image is from the dark looking out at the light. If it were the other way around somehow, I think it would evoke more of a sense of darkness for me.

It's hard to articulate the feelings an image creates in me or more precisely -- *why* those feelings are provoked.

I gave it an 8. I found it used the light incredibly well and hit the spot for me.
