Simple, I've got $40 to spend on a book (I got a G/C) so simply recommend up to 3 books. Everyone can benefit with this thread! No chatter, though...just recommendations with title & author and a very short sell line. My post to follow...

2005 Photographer's Market - Donna Poehner
(640 pages of contacts for selling your photos from magazines to stock agencies to newspapers...a must have!)
Associated Press Guide to Photojournalism - Brian Horton
(a great book giving tips for photojournalists from photojournalists with example photos)
Albanians - Joachim Ladefoged
(I haven't seen the book, and it's not in english...but I've seen the photos and they're incredible - details Albanians' struggles in former Yugoslavia)

It is more of a design book. But, it covers color and light. File formats. Alot of photoshop adjustments.
This book is out of print. But I have found some on Amazon.

I don't know if it's the best book as I haven't really researched them that much, but I bought "How to Wow - Photoshop for Photography" awhile back and it's helped me quite a bit with finessing my photoshop skills a little. I've learned lots of neat little tricks.

I have this book as well and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn tips and tricks for photoshop.

I'd get "The Art of Seeing" but it looks like they're out of stock...

I thought it may be Borders or Barnes & Nobles because they usually have extra 10%-40% if you wait for the coupon. Oh well. |

They also sell cd's but I just bought the Four Tet cd I was waiting for from another store...
Maybe I'll try and decide on a few cd's.

Digital Photography Bible Desktop Edition - Dan Simon
This is definitely a great book for beginners, but I like to browse through it the night before going on a photographic day trip to refresh my memory on certain aspects.
Very good reference book for digital photography. Here's the link to the companion site that you can view certain things that he refers to in the book.

Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind (read it!)
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman (only book when I cried... fantastic read)
The New Manual of Photography by John Hedgecoe (bible-esque)
I Highly Highly recommend these books. I have read all but the last of Terry Goodkind's and it is phenomenal stuff... for a one-book read, Anne Fadiman writes beautifully.

Okay...regarding Rwanda, I've been told that both "We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families" by Philip Gourevitch and "Shake Hands With The Devil" by Romeo Dallaire are great books.
For those who have read them, which one do you recommend more/first?

I know this doesn't answer your latest question but I came across this book that looks like it would be hilarious.
How to Be a Canadian - Even If You Already Are One
I haven't read the other two books but would suggest the one by Romeo Dallaire. I have only heard good reviews about it.
