My Darkness entry, a mediocre effort which was rightly spanked in the voting, attracted several comments from people who apparently couldn't see the subject. I don't mean they didn't "get" it, I mean it was not visible to them. Which makes me suspect that my monitor, or theirs, may be a bit out of whack. I'd appreciate anyone interested taking a look & posting a reply to say if you can see it or not (and also any relevant advice about monitors). For the record, the subject was not the knife, it was the partial face including an eye with a small catchlight, in the background. Do you see the face, or just the knife? Thanks.

Wow, nice shot. I could see it fine. I can even see the face in the thumbnail. I was going to submit a similar shot, with the exact same title.

Edit: I'm using a Dell monitor at school. I'll check it out again when I get home. I'm very curious as to how different peoples monitors are. Before I submit anything I make sure it looks good on three or more monitors.

No face, just knife on both LCD and CRT.

All I can see is a knife.

I can see the face fine in the full-size shot, very nice. But can only see the knife in the thumbnail with just the slightest hint of face. I generally make things lighter than I want for challenges, as I figure most people's screens are too dark.

Just a knife and a mysterious white speck.
Monitor at work.
Would never vote using this monitor as the last 5 squares on the grey scale are all black.
Still, must be an awfully dark image here.

I had the same problem. I think I left a comment on yours during the challenge that I could see the face. I ended up with 36 ones from people who could not see the image on mine.

i almost missed the face( but i was looking for it )just a teensey bit more light on the face would have made this a whole lot more noticeable IMHO

I cannot see the face behind the blade. I can barely make out the face. But my (LCD) monitor is as bright as it will go...

I saw the face, but only because I was looking for it. It took me a few seconds to see it even so.

Well you certainly hit the bell curve with this one. Nicely done photo I might add.

As for the face, I see it without any trouble at all. It's a shame, but I think monitor calibration (or lack thereof) needs to be a considering factor when submitting for challenges here. If you think it's going to be a bit dark then it will be too dark for many. I'm learning this the hard way myself with one of the current challenges...

This thread is helpful: Monitor Calibration...Great Tools

I like this test the best.

I cannot make out a face. I regularly calibrate my CRT.

BTW - I can't see the face in your image either ubique when looking at the thumbnail. Once the image is opened to full size it's quite evident.

Well, this IS interesting. You will see that in my comment during voting on your image, I remarked that you had captured detail in all parts of the image. So my monitor saw your image just fine, & vice-versa. I guess we both learned a lesson about other people's monitors?

I see the face clearly in both the thumbnail and the larger version. I'm using Compaq Presario R3000 laptop.

I can see contents of the pic just fine and did when voting as well.
06/22/2005 09:45:07 AM · #24
I think the pic is just too dark - in PS to get ANYTHING related to the face i have to use levels and move the midpont to 1.34. That is a large adjustment.

When i use the Info to check the values I get mostly 11-19, lots of 0 readings and once i hit 20. That puts the face in the bottom 8% of the available spectrum.

I'm at home now and can't see the face very good at all.
