Well, my holiday for this summer is all booked up! We are going first to New York City for a week, and then up to Toronto for a week! Will be the first time I've been to America other than Florida.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to go (not the obvious ones tho!) then I'd love to hear them!
Also, I only have 2x 512 and 1x 256 memory cards for my camera. I don't think that will be enough! So if anyone knows any cheap ways of making backups of CF cards or storing loads of photos (under £100 preferably) that would be really useful!
I'm a bit worried about taking my camera around New York as I've heard there is a high crime rate? What do people think about this, and any past experiences? Also, is there anything I'm not allowed to photograph cos of all that terrorist worry and stuff? I don't want any trouble with the "Cops" :)

| When are you going to be in Toronto? I would be happy to hook up with you and show you some of the sites. I'm sure that some of the other 20+ DPC'ers would want to come along. |

I dont know where abouts. Its a family holiday so dad went out and booked it yesterday. I think we're going to the Paramount Wonderland theme park for a couple of days, Niagra falls, but I don't know where those are in relation to where we're staying. I don't expect I'll know till we get there, lol

Ok. CN Tower in Toronto is worth going to, so is downtown with bank towers for some architectural shots. Also BCE Place at Bay and Front streets. Yorkville area is nice, Chinatown is interesting too (at Dundas and Spadina). Niagara Falls is a must and while there you may also try the butterfly observatory and helicopter rides over the falls.
There is some nature to be enjoyed outside of Toronto, Algonquin Park is about 2-2.5 hours drive north of Toronto (if you do decide to drive there do not take the highway through Barrie, go 401 east and take highway 35 through Lindsay, much nicer drive) , you may also try Tobermury and Bruce Peninsula National Park (about 3-4 hrs drive from Toronto though).
I am sure other Torontonians/Ontarians will give you more tips/ideas.

When you come to Toronto let me know and I will gladly show you around town with p3wiz. Also If your cards are full then you can burn them onto cd or dvd here if you wish. As the time gets closer let me know and I will flip you my cell number for contact.

NY is very dangerous. I would take advantage of the offerings in the duty free store and purchase handgun (9 millimeter is my favorite). Don't forget it has to go in checked baggage on the plane.
As for the cops, just make sure you have bail money - so change alot of money when you get here becuase you can't make bail in foreign currency. You don't want to spend time in Rikers. |

There's a lot to see around the Toronto area, Ben...from the harbour.. to the CN tower... and a lot more :)

There's a gem in upper Manhattan, The Cloisters.
Here's a link to a Frommer's review: The Cloisters
It's owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art--admission to one works in the other on the same day. Neither should be missed in my opinion.
BTW, how are you getting from NYC to Toronto? |

New York isn't that dangerous at all. I carry my camera around all the time and there are busloads of tourists doing the same without a fear or any problems. I haven't heard any horror stories yet so I wouldn't worry about a thing.
If you're taking pictures of something the authorities aren't happy with they will only give you a warning. It's happened to me twice(each time with a tripod)and they were very polite both times.

And don't worry about taking photos in Toronto...I've never heard of any problems.
Check out the harbour in Toronto, there are sometimes really nice tallships there at the right times. If you like music, catch a concert in Toronto...
...go eat at a cute restaurant near Queen Street with shoppers buzzing all around you (I love that)...
...when you go to Niagara falls, don't just go to the falls - go to the gorge as well and take a walk around...
...if possible, I also suggest a drive north for a few hours towards Algonquin or perhaps Tobermory, that's where you get to see the postcardish Ontario areas...
...don't go to Canada's Wonderland on a saturday...I would just plan one day for the park.
...there's no reason to worry about crime in Toronto or in NYC. Just be smart.
...and have fun!

Here is a map showing a scenic route from NYC to Niagara - it's about 7 hours worth of driving. It could be cut shorter by only 30 minutes by sticking to Interstate Highways, but your family would lose some of the scenic value.
At the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border on this route, the Delaware Water Gap is pretty scenic and worth a stop if you're an outdoorsy lot, and will be a welcome change from downtown-metro stuff. At the route through western NY State, it shows you leaving the Interstate and taking State highways through the Finger Lakes region, which is a very pretty sight.
I'm most familiar with the Ithaca area, having lived there for 4 years. The gorges all around town and the Taughannock State Park on the west side of Cayuga Lake or the Watkins Glen area can be fun - not what you think of when you hear "New York". There are some wineries around there too, and they used to give tours, maybe still do.

Lol good one photodude. Don't worry about crime in NYC, I think the places you will be visiting are busy locations anyway, so as long as you don't leave your stuff unattended you have nothing to worry about.
I hope you have fun here; there's a photography exhibit called Ashes and Snow which I've heard is amazing. Check it out.

I posted some (hopefully useful) information about places to visit in Toronto in this thread: Gordon goes to Canada. Some of that was assuming there was no car (e.g. the Leslie Spit is very close by car).
If you let us know where you're staying, we can give you an idea about what's within driving and/or walking distance, depending on your needs. Honestly, theme parks are best done by our friends to the south, but Canada's Wonderland (well it used to be called that) is still loads of fun. Both Niagara and CW are a ways out of the city (1.5/1.0 hours respectively, approximately).
Oh, the Art Gallery of Ontario is also worth a visit if you like that sort of thing. Casa Loma is a semi-popular tourist spot, but coming to Toronto to see castles just don't seem right.
What would you want to see (e.g. the great outdoors, city walking tours, birding, museums, art, architecture, etc.)?

Try here, type in date you will be in the New York City and it will give you a list of things that are going on at that time.
Haven't had any trouble shooting in the City, been shooting at Times Square at 6 in morning and 12 at night....don't go to Central Park until after 9 in the morning, just walk around the City like you know where you are going. I have had more tourist hand me their cameras for family shots than I can count.
You didn't list what part of the City you were staying at or when. If you need any specific questions answered let me know.
You might be able to find a place to burn your photos to a cd. Large internet cafe on 42nd Street...but you cannot do that there. You can get internet access for 7 days...I believe from 7 am until 1 am for $20.00 (at least it was a month ago).

I went here 10 yrs ago but didn't know where it was (went with my father). Just found the above info via google.
These guys serve PANCAKES THE SIZE OF HUBCAPS!!!!
(And I don't kid you...one stack of three pancakes is enough to feed your ol' grandmother for over a month. Furthermore, their omellettes seem to be a dozen eggs strong.)
One order of pancakes will probably feed 6 people and cost $10-$15. Oh, did I mention they had like 100+ pancakes and like 75 types of waffles.
Now that I found the address I am printing it so I can take my g/f!

lol, parts of NYC are dangerous but most times its not bad at all. I've definetely ridden the subway in manhattan at 2am, sometimes alone, and nothing has happened. You just have to be aware of your surroundings.
Make sure you do all the free stuff like visit central park, times square, ride the staten island ferry which goes past the statue of liberty, go to the empire state building, walk around ground zero, etc. There are lots of wonderful photo oppurtunitites there and you wont stand out of the crowd with a dsrl.
As far as photo restricted sites the only place i know of is the subway and i've definetely taken lots and lots of subway shots bcos of the lighting and excellent candid opportunities.

Ben, for some reason people get the impression that NYC is unsafe. I think that has something to do with the news primarily reporting "bad news" rather than all of the good things that go on. Before I started visiting NYC fairly regularly, I thought so too. I was very nervous about taking my camera equipment with me. The truth is, it is very safe and people are generally helpful. I've never had a problem while visiting. Just use common sense as Nick says above. Be aware of your surroundings and don't walk in the "bad" sections alone or late at night. All of the typical tourist spots are safe...and after 9/11 there are cops everywhere.
You've probably heard of South Street Seaport. If you can be there just after the sun sets you will get some really beautiful shots of the three bridges (Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg). By rights you're suppose to have a tripod permit to shoot on the pier but I did it without one and was never questioned about photographing the bridges so I wouldn't worry about it.

If you get a chance walk the Brooklyn Bridge. I walked the Manhattan Bridge during my last visit and the view from the Brooklyn Bridge is ten times better.

You can take a ride on the Circle Line Tour. It's located on the West Side Highway (Rt. 9A, I believe?). There are several tours offered that vary in length. I took the full 3-hour tour. It circles around the entire island of Manhattan. It takes you past the Statue of Liberty and under all of the bridges. They narrate as you go along which is really nice because they point out all of the landmarks and give you a bit of history as well.
I took this from the Circle Line boat:
Go up the Empire State Building on a clear day. Get there early to cut down on your wait time. The view is spectacular and you should be able to see for about 20 miles!
If you can deal with the cigar smoke, there is a nice Italian restaurant with very reasonable prices called Florio's. Great food!
Also, if you have access to a car, go through the Lincoln Tunnel and take your first exit (Weehawken). Then follow the road around to the left and you will eventually be on top of the 'Weekhawken Bluffs'. There is a super view of the skyline of NYC there. It's become a regular stop on my visits.

Central Park is huge and I haven't even made a dent. You should definitely wander around there a bit. It's really pretty.
Btw, Toronto's a pretty cool city, too. If you drive north a bit (maybe a 1/2 hour?) there are some bluffs. I don't remember the name of them but they were pretty cool.
