This works.

Would that work? Just asking because that might help me find something. That tractor is out of commission, but people still USE tractors. I that counts then I could find something that people still use, but it needs to be trashed.
06/26/2005 10:22:31 AM · #31
That would work since a person is not the main subject of the picture... at least that is my take on it.

Take a picture of something that has outlived it's usefulness. It could be old technology, BROKEN, DISCARDED, OUTGROWN, FORGOTTEN, - ANYTHING. Exception: people (alive or dead) are not to be the main subject.

My picture isn't of something not used anymore. It is of something broken. According to the rules, the contents of your garbage can will work.

people still use tractors but not this one. A beta machine is obsolete but yet some people still use them. Just because a person uses something doesn't mean that it is not obsolete. Look at a hand drill vs. power drill.

If the main subject is the now-obsolete trade of a milkman (NOT my entry), would you vote it down because it's people (...even though no person was included in the photo)?

what about just a hand on an old milk bottle or a portion of a person with an object? I think we are starting to get to anal about this and the contest hasn't even started yet. : (

I wanted to submit this one of an old-style charm bracelet but figured I would get blasted out of dpc-land : )

I agree. The picture shows the bracelet being worn, which means that it is still getting used and thus not obsolete.

Yeah, the milkman, the iceman, the blacksmith, the switchboard operator, the etc. etc. obsolete profession. I think the SC is missing a good bet by excluding people in this challenge.

I wish I could have entered this one (maybe a slightly more natural edit):

Sadly this challenge came up at a time when it's not convenient to go back and reshoot.

Totally agree with this in theory, in fact I did shoot an old junked vehicle thinking of using it for this challenge. But I'd bet $ that, rules or no rules, there are a lot of voters that will penalize such a shot because the subject isn't strictly "obsolete".

The milkman, switchboard operator, blacksmith, vintage cars "still running", old tractors etc are far from obsolete.

In 2nd and 3rd world countries they are in fact the in thing, the latest fashion, believe me.

What seems to be obsolete from this forum is out of the box thinking, come on folks where is the good stuff.

Perhaps permitting the photographing of obsolete body parts will render masses of pictures of the brain...????? Mine first. (Then again where is it).

We're saving "the good stuff" for the challenge itself.

As to obsolete subjects, a bogen enlarger is basically obsolete with the onset of digital photography. Most newspapers don't even have darkrooms any longer. However, you can still use the enlarger. So to me, the technology of the bogen enlarger is obsolete, still makes a good subject, even if it still works and some people still have darkrooms (like me.)

To me its fairly clear.

(Take a picture of something that has outlived it's usefulness.)

That would be to the photographer in my opinion.

It could be old technology, broken, discarded, outgrown, forgotten - anything.

Clearly again to the individual, what is discarded for one may still be usefull to others elsewhere, even perhaps in good working order.

Exception: people (alive or dead) are not to be the main subject.

That is as clear as the difference between night and day to both living and dead.

If it works for you, is human (dead or alive) then its not good to submit.

AS PER online dictionaries ..
