I have had a comment on my Darkness entry that has got me absolutely seething! It is the only comment in 134 votes and I really need to know why the entry is scoring so low so voters yet again a plea to comment where you have put in a low score.

BUT this comment has infuriated me and I would love to answer it. Is it the right thing to do so while the challenge is continuing or do I have to seethe until next week? I don't want a score changed - in fact it is paramount this person doesn't but I can't let the comment go!

Advice?

Pauline

If you're responding to let them know you disagree with their comment, however politely you phrase it, I'd advise waiting till after the voting period is over. It's only a few more days...

It's not a RULE that you have to but... I think it might be better to wait until even the remote possibility of their changing their score is no longer relevant to the discussion.

Personally, I would suggest you don't reply to the comment since you seem very attached to your photo or what your photo represents on a personal level. Give it a few days, and then after you have calmed down a bit, read the comment again and try to understand where the commenter is coming from. Replying to them at this point won't do anyone any favours and will probably make matters worse.

Congrats on buying membership too, don't get too addicted! hehe :)

If you want to respond now then make it clear that you are are doing so for clarification purposes only, and do not wish to influence their scoring....

You need to let it slide, you will go insane. The voters are unpredictable and do leave some very unusual comments sometimes. I suggest if you want some very good constructive ideas about your work present to the forum once the voting is over. The comments left while voting is generally short and at the end of the day not very helpful. The other thing you need to learn is a low vote in the challenge is not saying you are a bad photographer.

Good luck and do not let the commenters and low scores get you down.

heyah, pauline!
i just wanted to chime in here. i can see from your profile that you have a nice eye, and are capable of producing decent images. your scores have been coming up, and that's good.

so? let it go. don't sweat it. does it really matter? you can't control the comment, only your reaction to it--do you really want to let someone else's remark ruin your day? the best revenge is to go and take better pictures...

;-)

Thanks guys. I admit Iam really angry and I agree I do need to leave it until after the challenge is over to calm down. Unfortunately reading the comment will not help as it it NOTHING to do with photography and is in direct opposition to the challenge brief!

It seems you have to play safe in challenges but not only in the taking of the pic but also in the content!

Thanks again:)

And yes I am addicted already - I ought to be getting on with work!

I'd just let it go if I were you.
In fact that is what I do!
I used to get really annoyed, and sometimes I still do.
But I've learnt that it doesn't really matter what I think about someone elses comment or even what some else comments about my thinks.
Or something like that :-)
Anyway, one "bad" person certainly shouldn't ruin your day.

Hey wait till voting is done. Then we get to see who belongs to which photo and you may get some more comments then too.

If it just so happens that the comment is mine a PM will be fine.

I joined a week or so ago and this is the first challenge I've entered and am voting on. I must say voting is tough. I'm trying to comment on most which makes getting to even the 20% mark a challenge.

I think the big thing to be able to do is stay neutral. A vote is a personal view of the voter. You have your own view on your own picture. You're going to get extremes. One will say 1 and rubbish it. Another might give you the 10 and prase it for the rest of his/her days. In the end it is how you feel about your own photo that really matters. If you win along the way take it as a bonus.

Pauline

I have 150 votes, average score of 3.5, one (1) comment that is completely off base. While it is nice to get feedback of value, and rewarding to watch your score get higher from challenge to challenge most of all of this is not important...I enjoy the fact that other are getting a chance to see my photographs, some will get it, others won't. No big deal.

Some people listen to rock, others listen to jazz, if you don't understand the jazz maybe tommorrow you will.

Hi - I would let it go instead of letting it become a distraction. Enjoy the site and when the challenge is over if you still would like a clarification on the comment then PM the commenter. I would not recommend doing so while angry or during the challenge.

no, pauline, you DON'T!!!

why on earth would you let ONE comment affect how you approach photography and dpc? unless the comment was from someone with a lifetime average of 8+ with a gazillion ribbons and they were directing you to toss your camera in the river, you really should pay it no mind...and even then, i'd probably choose to ignore that, as well.

??? You would PROBABLY choose to ignore it???
TO ME, there is no probably. I WOULD ignore it. I couldn't care less if they were the top photographer in the world. (Starts another argument. Who decides who is top of anything? Again subjective)
It is MY photo and what I think about is what is right. It is YOUR vote and therefore YOU are right.
Whether MY thoughts and YOUR thoughts are the same or not has nothing to do with it.
MY thoughts and YOUR thoughts are BOTH right.

If it will make you feel any better, look at my signature, ;-). If you want, I can add this person to a big chart I have on the wall with two columns in it, "Friends" & "Enemies".

:-D

i support the skiprow method as mentioned here
put the annoyment about the comment in making a bigger effort to 'show 'em '
as far as the influence goes i think in the end it does matter zero if one person rates it with a 1 or a 10
i suspect even some people leaving comments with the purpose to get u annoyed..soo dont let them have it that way
i even manage to mark every comment as helpfull no matter how stupid it seems to me
i mean some comments does not say anything about the image and a lot about that person

If it really has nothing to do with photograhy maybe it is something that should be reported to the SC. Yes some see this as tattleing on someone but if you feel that strongly about the comment this would probably be more effective than replying to them yourself.

We can't control how the people vote or comment, heck as hard as they try, the SC can't even get everyone to understand what the challenge description is about :) Shoot what you like and know that you can't please everyone.

I myself have been trying to comment on everyone I vote for. So, I hope it was not my comment that ruined your day. If by chance it was I would be happy to talk about it out of the forums. What is killing me is. I have 135 votes with no comments. I hear a lot of that going around since I signed up a week ago. If we go around blasting people in public for the few they do leave. Well I don't think that is going to help the situation much. Again, just my 2 cents

I'm with you on that, i'd definitely rather have an unhelpful "crap photo" comment that at least gives me some idea of what people are thinking when they look at it than no comment at all.

Thanks again folks! Some wonderful people on this site who really care and that makes it all worth while! No-one who has posted has anything to do with the person who commented so it just goes to show you that the peole who really care are the ones who may wory about what they are saying!

I really feel that the comment would not identify my pic but if anyone on site council thinks so please edit this message with my full approval.
The comment read " religion is to do with enlightenment not darkness"

So yes it refers to the challenge but the challenge was to say what darkness meant to ME. The photo is being judged on the voter's beliefs and as it is they are ignorant as to the meaning of the items in the picture.

Yes it is just one comment although I have a sneaking suspicion that this is not the only person who is marking down due to their beliefs. I won't let this spoil my enjoyment of DPC or taking photos and thank you for your kind comments.

I shall post my pic on the forum after voting has ended to get an true assessment(happy if it is good or bad just as long as I know why).

you need to relax!!!!!!!!!!!!! If ONE comment has you this riled up, you'll never make it on this site.

FACT: You will get 10's and 1's on the same image. You will get an "I love the border" and an "I hate the border" on the same image. Nothing makes sense because we all have different views of art/photography, etc.

THE KEY HERE is to shoot WHAT YOU LOVE..PERIOD. Don't let the minions get to you! : )

As a relative newbie here (and my first forum post), my two cents probably isn't worth much, but I have to say that I think you'll do much better if you don't let one or two commentators get you down.

I have an entry in now that is doing poorly (woe is me!), and one commentator left a message regarding challenge interpretation that I very much disagree with. Nonetheless, I'm extremely grateful that he left it, because it gives me my first clue as to why a picture I thought was great is tanking.

I agree completely with the others who mentioned that if we trash people who give a honest, albeit negative, opinion, we'll discourage anyone voting low from commenting. I only wish more low voters did comment!
06/16/2005 09:05:52 AM · #23
Why has this comment upset you so much? Take it as someone else's personal opinion on a very subjective issue and leave it well alone. It's more interesting to look inside and examine what it is that has pressed some buttons. This is more about you than about the person who left the message. Please don't discourage people from leaving comments, everyone has something valuable to say, even the people who don't put their message across too well. I find ALL feedback on my photos valuable.
Edit... after a little thought, maybe not ALL! LOL
But I try to be open and I try not to put people off leaving opinions.

You're right, that's a pretty nonsensical comment to make when the competition is all about your interpretation... then they're voting and trying to tell you how you're MEANT to have interpreted it? This is clearly someone who's never heard of the term subjective.

I really don't think it's anything to get worked up over, i imagine the majority of voters (i hope!) aren't THAT ignorant, and this is just a drop in the ocean.

Besides, no religion adopted in the western world has ever been about enlightenment - their purpose has always been to serve as the opiate of the lower classes (pardon the cliche), and to allow them to be oppressed while looking forward to an afterlife. The only major religion that is associated with "enlightenment" per se is buddhism, especially zen - and that is more concerned with living life for yourself than living in such a way as to obtain the afterlife you want.

I'm not sure I agree with you there, but I see where you're coming from.
But let's not go there! ;-)
