Ok folks ... I am going to call BS on a majority of the entries in the challenge...

the statement said "What does darkness mean to you? Show us with an image."

That is far different from what I am seeing in a lot of images (Although some are very very good)

So IMHO there will be "1" s delt out with the comment
"IMHO this image -- although very nice -- did not meet the challenge"

BTW for full disclosure... I did not enter this one as I could not come up with a idea that met this challenge.

If It was just a "dark image" I would have come up with some cool stuff.

Just my rant .

I agree with your interpretation of the challenge and the lack of meeting it by most entries.
I'm not so quick to hand out 1's if it really is a great image, but they definitely lose points from me.

I think the more just approach is simply not score the ones that did not meet the challenge...there are some really great images that just do not come up to speed for this challenge

Did it say 'What does darkness mean to the viewer who will vote on your submission?' You cant really judge if something does or does not mean darkness to the photographer. With challenge topics like this a lot of it is very subjective. Technically an image should portray some insight to the viewer but sometimes you can present something totally unobvious and yet personally know of a reason for it.

I do not know what darkness means to other people and I think you are a bit presumptious in asserting your vision of darkness to be the only valid one.

Glad I sat out of this one.. i'll vote based on photographic quality alone

Ah yes...another open challenge by the "you don't know what I'm thinking" clause. :)

Here they are again ... those that think their narrow-minded view is the only way. This is a case of deja Vu from "Tacks" when there are other dictionary meanings to the word. The photos that met the criteria, but not the typical meaning of the word were hammered.

There's a whole bunch of really nice sunsets in here... I'm willing to concede that for a whole bunch of people, sunset=darkness: I have no choice but to concede that. Ditto all the other recurring themes, no need to single out sunsets.

BUT...

I really want the winners to be images of quality that show a clear attempt to take us into the heart of darkness, as it were. And there are quite a few of those, non-stock images that are very well done and very moody. These are the ones that get my highest votes. The "pretty picture" people usually dominate, basically. If ever there was a challenge when "not-pretty" pictures should win, this one is it.

I don't agree that this is an open challenge. Certainly all the photos I have looked at so far (maybe half) have some connection to Darkness. The Challenge is not a narrow challenge but the entry has to have some conenction to Darkness. I see it in most of these. A true Open Cahllenge has no subject what-so-ever.

Edit - Bear - I agree that my higher votes will be the more emotive shots and I also hope that loose connections are not the top vote getters. But most of these are conencted in some way.

I liked this challenge and enjoyed the outcome of my image.. though I didnt make it to enter..

It seems as though this challenge was really meant to test our capacity for voting. There are great dark images that dont say darkness to me at all. And then there are very bad images that scream darkness through and through. I have to take a break from voting for a while, its given me a friggin headache. Very terrific shots overall, some of them just dont fit.

P.S. some of them are just plain creepy, ty everybody for the nightmares. LOL.

Amen Robert, thanks for mentioning it, I agree completely. Hopefully more people out there are thinking the same thing.

Again I just goofing around J.B. Actually I didn't get in this one as I couldn't capture by camera what darkness is to me, I do that in music.

First pass there was some really good shots in there. I was expecting (hoping for) more Goth pics than actually made it in the challenge.

One thing I did notice on my first pass pics that were average or lessor, there seemed to be more of oversight on technical (mechanics) aspects (beyond lighting) than usual. Either more new kids on the block or everyone is so afraid of disqualification that they don't correct certain problems with the shot.

New kids. You were probably looking at my entry!

I'm fully expecting low scores all around because my image is far from beautiful. Its composition is deliberate but I'm certain that my choices will not make it past the critics who want pristine eye-candy.

I was surprised when I first checked my score though, was at 5.66 with 9 votes, a click of update had me down closer to where I was expecting at 4.66 with 12 votes.

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out and its an excellent representation of something I consider to define an aspect of darkness so I'll simply ignore the voting, see if anyone takes the time to understand the image via their comments and enjoy something I created that is much different from my norm.

I'm crushed... this is one of few challenges that would've really been completely up my alley... and I forgot about it entirely and missed it. Too much work lately! Booooo! :(

I fully disagree with you, with a smile. To me, darkness need not mean moody, evil, gothic, or ugly. In a photograph, darkness is really only useful as a setting for the light in an image. Without light you have an all black image, and, so far, those haven't gone over too well here.

IMHO, whether the subject of a "Darkness" photo is "pretty" or not shouldn't make any difference. The best photo should win.

I already have a guess as to how my photo's going to go over with you. :) Please, if you get the time, let me know what you think after the challenge.

It's not that I'm blind to interpretations of "what darkness means to me" that are NOT "gothic" or "evil", as you put it; I have scored very high a few images so far that are NOT of that general "moody" genre. It's rather that these challenges, as a whole, give little opportunity for the "dark side" to shine, so I'm hoping our "goth" shooters will get another moment in the sun here, as they did in the "moods" challenge.

Okay, I think I understand better now what you were saying. Regardless, I still think the best photo should win. If the goths can cut it, then fine by me. But if they can't, then they don't. I guess what I'm saying is they shouldn't get a ribbon just because the category fits their look.

Oops, it's dark. Goodnight!
