I'm posting this as me, not as a moderator. It seems like every time there's an argument here lately it turns personal in some way. This is sad, because wherever you have creativity you will have debate, and people need to be able to explore the issues this site raises in an open way. It's not going to be possible though if people keep lashing out at each other and threads have to be locked or hidden to stop it getting too ugly, or to tidy up after it's already gone over the top.

Moderators can only react to the way the users are behaving. Users have to be prepared to recognise that there is a kind of site etiquette around here. There are a lot of new people signing up all the time, and it may take a while for them all to adjust, but there's a right way to debate here and a wrong way. MOST people know the right way, but this is kind of how I see it should work:

First of all, if you have something you want to discuss with a particular person, use the private message feature on their profile page, not the forums. It doesn't work in a very intuitive way, but you have to click on the link in their email field. Bringing up personal issues around everyone else just creates a lot of noise, and invites people who enjoy conflict to get involved, and people who are sensitive to conflict get upset as a result. That's how things get ugly!

If it's more than just a minor grievance, take it up with a moderator or administrator in private.

That leaves room on the forums for interesting, stimulating creative debate, which is fine and should be encouraged. However, trolling is becoming a much more frequent occurrance here than it was a few months ago, and it's not going to go away. If a post is really offensive, moderators can edit it and get it out of the way, but that always runs the risk of giving the troll something to react to of course. If a post is just a bit edgy and not horribly offensive, ignore it, maybe laugh at it, relax and move on. It makes everything easier.

There's a great sense of humour that does surface here on a regular basis, and I like it :). We should encourage more of that and drown out all the negativity. If you find you're taking things a little bit too personally, find a way to laugh instead of getting angry, it's a great release and it can stop a flamewar in its tracks.

I don't want to sound like I'm lecturing anyone. As I said, this is me talking, not as a moderator, just as myself. I like this place, I don't like the ugliness and it's not necessary.

Ditto!!! Everyone who posted in this thread.

I've noticed more hostility here lately and have become rather reluctant to post comments on pictures. I enjoy both giving and receiving comments and feedback, but, at the same time I don't want to ruffle any feathers or push any noses out of shape. I try to be constructive in my comments and would never intentionally post or comment to aggrivate. Even though it may be taken that way.

I've had several comments this week. Some say they like the color tones others recommend a color change. If I have an equal amount of hooray's or boo's regarding the same feature I consider it a wash and don't pay much more attention to it. However, if there are more positive than negative comments regarding a photos specific feature, I disregard the negative and visa-versa. Many aspects of photography are subjective anyway. I use the information I need and forget the rest or ask for more clarification.

Please, everyone, when viewing any comment I may make please don't get bent. I NEVER intend to irritate you.

Thx,
Shar

I don't usually post much in forums, but I do actively read them and yes I have noticed personal issues of late. Thanks Lisae you certainly have explained this extreamly well.
