Thanks for the comments so far on my construction photo, just so you can appreciate it's flaws, its actually a self-portrait taken using only 2 desk lamps while at home alone & bored, getting decent lights and reflectors etc next week :)

I do not think you're suppose to say which photo is yours while the voting is still on. Good it didn't work to add the photo, although, only by the name it was easy to find.....
Hold on 'till the end and then you can ask all you want on the photo.

Good thinking to remove the image name, 'case the link to the photo doesn't work....... I am not voting for this challange, so for me it doesn't make a difference knowing which one is yours....

Well I'm very happy to see so many good comments and also very useful! This is my first time to participate to a challenge and I'm very satisfied with the results! I wish luck to all of you who entered any challenge and I hope my photo will get some more comments and votes! :)

7 very positive comments,but still dropping. Well, it's again one of those photos, one either likes or dislikes and I'll end up in the middle I guess. I don't care, I care about those 7 comments, because those who voted low didn't even bother to tell me why, except one who thought it necessary to make a sarcastic remark, but can't tell you what, whithout giving a clue to the photo.

A little up. Voting is almost over and as I'm right in the middle, a lot of voters must have voted me low, but none of them took the effort to tell me in what way they disliked my photo and I asked for critiques. How am I supposed to learn from that.

Same here... I didn't expect much from my submission in the challenge but did it anyways as I liked the picture and colors etc.
It is doing Avg of 5 with only four comments appreciating the picture but no one from low scorers who has even bothered to write why.
I guess these are guys who just go 'Click 3, Click 4, Click 1, click 3, on most of the pictures without even taking time to really look through for it's creativity or relate the picture to the topic and just vote for the heck of it.
I personally have learnt to vote keeping in mind
-- that does the picture meet the challenge in the first place
-- has the photographer been creative enough
-- does the picture say a story
-- what's the quality of the picture... etc etc...
this helps me identify some of the top rankers maybe only a few that come in a 8 - 10 bracket 10 - 20% in 6 - 7 bracket. Most of them that have met the challenge but are not unusual get a 4 - 6 and few that do not meet a challenge get below that..... but mostly any of the last two definitely get a reason posted against it. I am sure my comments would have annoyed a some but atleast they get to see my view...

| The comments I have received have shown that the voters appreciate a well thought out, yet technically imperfect shot! I love that. My score is hovering around 5.8 right now, but that doesn't matter to me. The comments prove to me that folks do enjoy a shot and doesn't have to be perfect. Thanks to all who commented, it is appreciated! |

Titia, I have looked at many of your images on your web site and believe that you are well on the way of learning how to take a good photo, in fact I believe you have already developed your on style of imagery...so if I were you I wouldn't be to worried about not getting feed back here, but I do understand that it would be nice....
I am new to this web site and to digital photography but not new to photography or the arts....I am still trying to figure out the best way to judge the photos here...Frankly I believe it is near impossible to write something about every image.(or even the 1-3s in some challenges) Even good images deserve comments I believe.
I have critiqued many art shows as well as been in many competitions...I think every judge wishes that it were possible to comment to every participant who does not make the final cut into exhibitions but realize that it is not possible especially when you are looking at over two hundred images...
The best way to be fair is to develop a judging system that you as the judge can stand behind and treat people equally...
Finally I have notice inconsistencies in what some people say while the voting goes on...example, people will state that the hi-lites are too bright when another well compliment that the detail in the hi-lites are right on...Two comments that are direct opposite of each other. What does this tell me.... ??? it tells me that the lack of understanding by one of the commenters means that most likely that there is a novice making the judgement....How do you learn from comments that are at odds with each other..???? I say don't worry about the comments to much....The best way to learn is to look at photographs and lots of them....Find some photographers to learn by and continue to ask questions...you will get it I promise but it takes work. More work than entering weekly challenges and waiting for the comments to come in to help you....take the "bull by the horns" and study, as there are some here who know a great deal who vote and comment and there are many here who haven't been on the learning curve long enough to really make a meaningful comment but they also vote and comment.

Yea, consistancy is always a big issue. But it might be more of a problem with visual consistancy. Not everyone's monitor is set up the same, so even though it looks right on your monitor it might not look right on another. Taking this idea further, I noticed that many of the high scoring pictures on this site tend to be pictures that are viewable on a huge range of monitor settings, due mostly to high contrast, crisp focus, and bright colors, without going too far into either dark/light extreme.
Also, as for the comments themselves. I tend to take the comment in relation to the person's score. I will take the comment more seriously if the person outclasses me, and less seriously if they score lower. At this point in this challenge I was very happy to receive a very positive comment from someone with multiple 7+ entries under their belt...
The idea here, is that a person who has scored well will most likely know what they are talking about and see more of what is right/wrong in the picture... however this is just stereotyping. |

I know I have my own style and that I can make a photo that has a good composition, but the problem is technique, I don't know anything about technique, shutterspeed, aperture and all that stuff. But someday I will, if only those people up there, will give me a second life, LOL I retired last year, but I'm 24 hours short each day. But I'll get there eventually. Too many hobby's and not taking enough time off to study properly.
Just got hit hard, dropped down from 5.0825 to 5.0719 by one voter. Oh well, as they say at my place "appearently I'm not pissing in the voter's pot' (excusez le mot). But that doesn't stop me to continue to make my own kind of pics. I simply refuse to 'please' the voters by making photo's they like. I'm a subborn Dutchie.

Titia, I understand your desire to know it all and to beable to make perfect images...I think our digital generation has put undue burden on the art of photography. Technique isn't everything.....I would take a photograph that speaks to me on my level of understanding of what the world is over a photograph that is perfect in the technique but short on content...There are lots of well know photographers whose images are important for what they say rather than how they look to darkroom critics... (see Robert Frank and his book the "Americans" for example) Of course content suffers if you make a photograph that is so bad technically that you can't look at it and see the content, so the two do go hand and hand to an extent...
One thing that bothers me about some digital photography is that it looks digital and that the photograph seems so artifical because of the hyper activity of the surface. I like soft images that look more like traditional photos...Any way, like I have writen to you...I love your images and I know they will only get better once you are satified that you know enough about the technique that is needed for you to say what you need to say in them...(your poetry is pretty good too)

You're right Barry, actually that's how I feel too. There are a lot of super technical photos, looking smart, but telling nothing at all. Those photographers forgot to put their heart and soul in. Those photos are just beautiful created, but dead pictures. The only time I 'miss' techniques is when I want to make a real close up photo, they allways come out blurry and not real sharp, but as I said, that too I will know how to do one day.
Thanks for the compliment on my poetry, I'm blushing all over here. I still make a lot of grammar faults, but I have poet friends all over the world, who will point them out to me.
English is a beautiful language to write poetry in.
