Text messaging e-mail support.
When someone leaves me a comment, or my score changes at update, I want my cell phone to beep... IMMEDIATELY! :)

While voting, the ability to cast all my votes and then upload to the challenge rather than uploading/reloading after each picture. Even if it meant not updating the actual page until the following hourly update.
There are a few small others, but you asked for one, and this would be the most important to me.

| For every score given to me, the programming would automatically convert my scores of 1 - 3 to 8, 4 - 7 to 9, and 8 - 10 to 10. :-) |

Just kidding. ONE feature I would really like to have is that when I go to a person's profile page, the title or at least the challenge of the pictures shown. I always get confused when I see a ribbon, but I don't know which pic it is for. Maybe the ribbon could just be stuck beside the challenge or something.
Dang, I don't know. Did this make any sense what so ever.

I really had to think hard about how I would improve such a great site! The only thing I could think of was this...
I generally like to go through and vote for all of the pictures, and revisit them to make comments. It would be helpful to me if, after voting for all images, I could start at any thumbnail and then go through picture-by-picture again if I want to, rather than returning to the thumbnail page each time (which can take a moment to load all of the images back up again).
I like the "post-voting" thumbnail page a lot so I can see the order of how I voted, but it would be cool to have a "previous/next" option to go through images individually again to add comments. Am I making sense here?
Along sort of the same lines, it would be interesting to view challenge results with the same order I voted them (along with their finishing position), so I could easily compare how my votes measured up to the way the images finished in the challenge.

| Oh, and for the record... I'm also *against* the idea of allowing "photo details" to appear with entries during voting (something many folks have expressed a desire for). I think that one of the important aspects of photography that we should be learning is that the photos should be able to stand alone to elicit a response from the viewers. While I admit there are times I wish I could explain my intentions along with my shots, I think that diminishes the effectiveness of what the site is accomplishing. We should work hard to let our photos tell the story, not via a text description. The title should be all that's necessary to do that... |

I, too, am against the description or photographer's comments being shown during the voting. I personally feel descriptions should not be necessary. The photographers job is to explain their subject visually.
BTW: I know this is #3, but [ :) ] could we have a underline option in the reply box along with bold and italic in the forums posts?

I suppport a photographer comment and detail on the photo. I believe that if the image doesn't stand on its own without the comment/detail, the voter will handle it normally anyway... i would love to hear what people have to say about their images while i'm voting.

But will you propose we let the voter "sign" the comment, sacrificing his/her anonymity if he/she wishes?
In any case, I would vote against viewing the details while voting.

| I think another downfall of seeing text comments is that people could use that area to do an number of things that could "plead for sympathy" while voting. I think it's important that we're looking at all of the photos as though everything is on a level playing field. If I were to read a text description that says, "I'm only 6 years old," or "I can't afford a better camera," I could see myself having sympathy toward them and giving a higher vote than what the photo itself really deserves. The end result would be that the votes would be skewed for some shots, and the integrity of the site, IMO, would be compromised. |

The ability to do a single download for a voting session, so that I can do something like this:
1. Crank up my PC and dial in via my slowdem.
2. Download a group of images.
3. Go offline.
4. Do the voting.
5. Go online again.
6. Upload my votes and comments.
7. Download the next batch.
Some specific requirements:
- Set a max size for each download (E.g. I can set the download size to 1Mb per download.)
- Offline client to run under Linux if possible. (e.g use Java rather than VB)
- Minimise what is downloaded to what is necessary only. (E.g. dont do thumbnails, let the client generate them.)
- Email the votes/comments back?
- Allow voting/downloading at the same time. |

I would love to see a feature implemented for "batch" voting and commenting. Get most of the work done on my pc without the constant slow communication between the server & pc.
I'd even be willing to see it done in a second window where all I saw was:
title - vote - comment field
And I could see the tumbnails or full photo in the other window. |

One relatively simple way to do this would be for all of the photos in a particular challenge to be thrown into a zip file. Users who are interested in voting without have to wait for each individual photo to download can then download this one file and unzip them onto a pre-determined folder on their machine. In their user prefence options on DPChallenge, they set the directory on their machine where they unzipped the files to.
When the user goes to vote on the Challenge, they use the same pages as everyone else... but the server instead references the images on their system instead of the images on the DPChallange server:

instead of
<img src="//www.dpchallenge.com/challenges/14/myphoto.jpg">

You can do this manually now, using [ u ] and [ /u ] (no spaces) around the text you want underlined.

That's exactly why I am against adding details to the photos as well. Granted, in some cases it would have been helpful to see some details. However, I feel there might be a tendency or an opportunity to sneak in all sorts of comments that skew the objectivity of the voter, such as "I stood hours on a slippery slope in the pouring rain waiting for this photo op to occur and just when I was framing the picture this dinosaur showed up out of nowhere and it scared the bejeesus out of me and that's why this image is slightly out of focus and not framed as I wanted to".

My top pick would be for any aspect ratio images to be allowable - but I know this is coming so that's cool.
I also think it would be cool for the photographer to be able to choose the background colour of the page where their photo will be displayed (perhaps from a limited set of options - white, mid-grey, black).
The thing that would help me most when getting through the increasingly large number of images we have to vote on would be the ability to have maybe 5 or 10 pictures to vote on per page. I estimate that 50% of my voting time is waiting for the pages and images to download and I'm on DSL too. Having multiples on one page would mean that the ones further down the page would continue to load while Im voting on the first one. Plus it would reduce the load on your server.
The final thing that came up today is only half serious - how about a "squelch" or "ignore" feature that automatically blocked messages from people we don't like on the forums?

Could it work if we could see details about a photo only after we have voted on it? You would be able to change your votes all you want but when you go to view the photo info on a particular photo it would lock in your vote for that photo and then you could read the info on it. It could be an incentive to vote on all of the photos and to do it earlier so we could enjoy reading about the photos the rest of the week. What do you think? Is there merit to this?

| I'd really love to be able to see the distribution of my received votes during the week. I realize that that might break the anonymous model a little, but perhaps that could be mitigated by only updating the vote distribution chart daily (instead of with each update). |

Chris, I wanted to tell you that I love your "Long and Rinding Road" image. Really great! I've tried leaving a note in the comments section after your picture but it just isn't working right. Very creative thinking.
