Does anyone use a color scanner ? (obviously not for DPC)
I just bought the HP4570c so I could scan old family slides & negatives and the results are very disappointing so far. Colors are dull, weird/wrong sometimes, etc.
Is this related to the monitor vs. other colour sources difference?
Will I eventually be happy with it once I figure out the right settings to use for scanning?
[I scanned color wheels from a book on the flatbed and managed to adjust the colors in Photoshop so they look OK.]

Partly yes. Your scanner has a colourspace it works in, your monitor has a colour space it works in. They will not be exactly the same. Colour management allows you to convert between the two correctly.

Other scanner settings/ config can change the outcome too (colour depth, resolution etc)

I recently bought a MicroTek ScanMaker 5900. Its slide/film capabilities are very weak also. I don't have a color issue but the scanner does not scan the slides or film bright enough. These desktop scanners are designed for document/photo scanning and the slide/film is just an added feature of them. I haven't seen a desktop scanner yet that made great scans of slides and film.

The Nikon slide/film scanners do an EXCELLENT job but they are dedicated to that purpose and they are pricey...

I just happened to be looking at flatbed reviews yesterday evening. This link...

proivdes some informationon hte Epson products, and also a few links to other sources of reviews.
If one is willing to spend some bucks ($300 & up, way up) the flatbeds can approach the film scanners.
I personally have the Nikon LS-30 film scanner, an older madel and it works OK for 35mm. It's 2700 DPI, and has a SCSI interface. Scanning results are good for slides that have relatively low density, but watch out for underexposed Kodachrome!
I don't think the LS-30 is available new anymore, but I've seen 'em go regularly on e-bay for well under $200. The major dig on the LS-30 is lack of support for multiple scan passes (noise reduction) and this can be gotten around with Ed Hamrick's VueScan.

I have an Epson GT-8300UF. Scanned loads of negatives with it and the results have been great. Just a shame that our printer has got some seriously wierd colour cast problem!

I was also disappointed when we first used our Minolta Dimage ScanDual II.

We did find results improved immenseley when using Viewscan software (rather than the stuff that came with) and used the multiple pass facility (where it scans each negative several times).

We still need to neatimage the results, it is slow and the results aren't as top quality but then - unless we pay the price for the top quality scanners we can't really expect that.

Hope some of this helps.

I have the same scanner. I love it. I don't have any challenges with it or the colors it puts out. I scan from negatives all the time. All seems fine to me.

Perhaps it is the quality of the old slides & negatives, then. Or maybe I haven't discovered the best settings/method for them.

How do you do your scan of negatives? What settings do you choose once you see the preview in "hp scanning"?
