Borrowed a Canon 350 d Rebel for a few days have no instructions so having to learn by trial and error.

As I have only ever used a Canon digital Ixus, I am having a few teething problems,

I was expecting the Main LCD screen to show me a preview of the shot I wish to take.
My Ixus does this…

However the rebel is totally blank.
I see the image dispayed after I have taken the shot, and I can select the green arrow button to see all the images taken.

The only way I can see what I am currently trying to take is through the view finder.
So this poses a couple of questions..

1. Is it possible to see a preview through on the LCD?
2. If so what menu settings need to be invoked for this to happen, or is it a button?

It's a DSLR, the view thru the viewfinder is all you get.

The preview is one of the great things about P&S digital cameras, and something that I would really miss on a DSLR, especially on odd-angle shots (like set-up macro's...not too easy to get your eye to the viewfinder in all cases).

It looks like there is a new Canon that has something of a preview via a mirror lock-up, but not a full-time preview. When a good DSLR Finally features preview like a P&S, it will be a nice change.

DSLR is just like film SLR's no preview. On the bright side the
battery last an amazingly long time.

I.m in the same position as you Artan,. My husband bought me a Rebel 350d xt and we spent 1/2 hour trying to get the lcd viewfinder to work. Funny! Yeah and then we even called up the Canon service line. We were put on wait, but thankfully my daughter discovered the manual where it says that the lcd screen can't be used as a viewfinder. And fortunately we were still waiting for someone to come on the phone....we put it down quite sheepishly! There is so much to learn about the camera...think it will take weeks.

I have 3 days..... then it goes back.
So I am experimenting... no manual is a bit of a pain though..

If I get on with it a 350d is on the cards as my next purchase

Look on the Canon website, they should have a PDF.

While i don't have a manual on "How to Use the Internet to find things" to give you, I can get you that 350XT manual. It is PDF file.

I got the link to work in IE. It doesn't work in Netscape but that may have something to do with cookies.

I don't know why everyone is so hung up on an LCD screen when the viewfinder on any SLR is so much more powerful. It's after all wysiwyg when used in conjunction with the aperture preview button. It's also in most lighting situations better at focusing... A couple of days shooting with the viewfinder and you'll never wish for a LCD focusing system again...

I think there is alot of confusion... a D-slr cannot offer live preview, it's why it's called SLR (single lens reflex) the word reflex means that the Sensor (the thing that sees the image and that shows it to you on the LCD) does not see the image before you press on the shutter release.... so unless they come up with a DUAL sensor SLR...there is no such thing as Preview slrs.

as for the 20DA it is a special breed of camera with NO IR filtering, and designed for astro photo...and the Prism allows for LCD preview only for 2seconds at a time and requires MIRROR LOCK UP which pretty much makes any type of regular photos (exept tripod pre-composed exposures) impossible.
