I agree 100%. Some people, when asked to describe their voting style say they'll only deduct a point or two if they don't feel the photo meets the challenge. Comments in this thread seem to indicate otherwise. Don't be too sensitive. The General public is inconsistant at best and at worst incapable of determining the semantics between choice and decision.( the dictionary definitions of challenge titles make me laugh as if someone were using the definition of a word to decide what to vote) If you have to delve too deep into this when you vote, you should probably spend more time with the camera than the dictionary. Are the artists or the theme police going to choose the direction here? Oh my photo is sitting at 4.6. I wish it were sharper but I'm happy with the subject.

I must say that dpchallenge is a great site....but.....what is bothersome is that it doesn't seem to be using it's full potential...Reading peoples comments about current scores the one message I get is that there is always controversy about how the challenge is presented and interpruted (sp) and complants about the scoring. My comment may not be will received but I believe it is the photographers here that are letting the concept of this site down...If you look at how many comments your images get in relation to how many view they get you will see that very few of us try to help each other out by making comments...I would bet that the quality of images would improve if we paid more attention to helping each other out rather than worrying about our scores or if the challenges were well defined. Don't get me wrong,,,,I "ain't" perfect either and for being pretty new here I have complained and I have made some quick judgements, but I have also tried to be more responsible with my judgeing as well...nothing is perfect but bitching and complainning doesn't get us anywhere and it certianly doesn't help to bring out creativity. I think an atmosphere of trying to help each other out will bring the best of all of us out.

I agree Barry. Most of the comments I get don't offer suggestions just judgement. I joined to get better but sometimes frustration wins...

In my case, I waited 15 minutes with my camera trained on a subject, waiting for a decision to be made. I caught the precise instant when the decision is implemented. But I'm still being told my shot doesn't show a decision. C'est la vie...

It seems to me that in a challenge like this, there will be more judgment than suggestions in the cooments, simply because the challenge topic istelf is so nebulous. How do you help someone "improve" a shot of a "decision" if you can't even see what the decision is supposed to be?

Robt,

I am in almost the same sit. as you. I took a bunch of shots just to get the right moment a decision was being made. I haven't received any comments about it and I hope people do see with what I am trying to say.

SC: If this gives away too much then delete this post. I don't feel it does.

I know comment are not alowed to be shown during challenge, and a lot of people dont like when a title is used to put a pic into perspective. I do feel that if a persons reason for entering a pic into a certain challenge with his explination as to why, my allow us to see the pic in his view, then we could make a clear comment on the pic based on quality and meeting the challenge. Let us now what your thinking here and trying to do then we all can help each other. It is hard to defend a pic when all is said and done.

Robert you would be talking about Henri Caritier Bresson's "Decicive Moment"...In good photographs the momement over powers the work the photographer put into making the image...almost making it look easy...Sorry to say that the struggle doesn't matter to the viewer it is the image that counts. What we need to do when judgeing the groups image is to realize that all of us are in the mist of the "creative Struggle".

Well I just finished voting (instead of studying, mind).

3 10s
3 9s
4 8s
7 7s
50 6s

Lots of 3s, 4s and 5s

FIVE 1s...that's a lotta ones. I try to use the whole scale when I vote to create a decent bell curve.

My biggest complaint with this challenge is when the photograph itself doesn't SHOW decision. If people rely on the title to associate it with the challenge topic, than the picture itself is a failure for this challenge and deserves a low score.

I will not be picky with decision vs choice and all of the other small definitions of words. My main concern is that the image conveys a choice/decision without needing the title to make sense of it....if that makes any sense at all.

Agreed, Chris. I'm with you on that one.

EDIT: I think this is the type of challenge that makes you want to smash your head agaisnt the table screaming, "YA JUST DON'T GET IT, DO YA?!"

Particularly at some of the comments!

I think this challenge was, first of all, a hard challenge. How exactly do you photograph a "decision" -- it's not something solid. Secondly, the batch of photos for this challenge has not been the best that i've seen, even some of the photos that don't convey a decision, Anyways, I'm not voting too harshly on photos that rely on their on the titles unless of course it's a complete stretch. i'm doing okay score wise compare to most of the scores posted on this thread so i'm not gonna complain about how people are voting on mine =).

I finally got around to voting and find that now I HAVE to go back and justify to myself and the artist why/how I voted. This time I will do my best to not only say why/how I go there, but also what the final score was. Why? - Because to capture a decision is an abstract process, but the results as abstract or definitive as they may be must be clearly communicated and I often find myself misunderstanding. An abstract challenge will most surely be judged subjectively rather than objectively.

Any who recieve a comment from me during this time, please note, in most cases a PM will not change my vote at all, it will only reveal your wisdom in how it does meet the challenge. It will most likely not change the image's ability to visually communicate a decision (the act of making one or the decision itself) which in some cases others have done much better in this challenge, while some have come close (invoked the feeling or a weak link) while others did not do such a great job of making me think of a decision.

just finished voting....hmmmmmm...i think my decision here was tougher than most photographed...

I am very surprised at the number of entries depicting death or threats of death, near 5% of the entries. Certainly not an easy theme for any challenge, but I am further dismayed by the poor quality of many entries, and especially those with no obvious relationship to the challenge theme.
This challenge drags down my 'average vote cast' score!

I wish I had gone with my second instinct, which was to title my photo, "Untitled" or "---" so the image would stand alone. I have had two comments now to the effect that the title should not have to explain the decision, when in fact, the decision is clearly portrayed independent of the title. Is this a case of people looking for a title to judge?

i didnt look at any titles when i did my initial scoring...i wanted to see it for myself.... for example taking a picture of lets say a balloon and titling it "to pop or not to pop" is not taking a photo of a decision...its still just a photo of a balloon

I have been really trying. Some time ago I read graphicfunk's bio, the part where he discusses his scoring criteria. I liked it a great deal. It was inspirational, and I was determined to raise my voting scores. It's miserably low and it was bothering me. It just wasn't right.

This challenge has probably set it back BELOW where it was when I thought it was low.

I don't know. I just CAN'T (in good conscience) vote too many of the entries high.

I really want to, but I just can't.

There's the rub.

After looking at my own entry (which I thought was sooooo good after all the hours I spent on it)... I wouldn't even vote it high! It's so easy to get attached to a picture and put the blinders on.

That's funny because the same bio inspired me not to be such a low votin bum too. I hated the fact that I had " av. votes cast" of 4.83....something. So I adjusted my thinking and slid the scale up 2 points or so. I feel much better, less serious and more in the line of fun. I'll leave the back-bitting to others.

I figure the better the photographer you are, the more secure and generous you can afford to be.

So....the 10's are on me!!! Cheers!

When I became a member, I waited quite some time before I even entered a challenge, because I'm totally not competative (don't know if that's spelled right, I'm a Dutchie)and because I know there are flexible and non-flexible voters. That's how it is and always will be and that's what I saw and read when I finally entered the challenges.

I read comments here in this thread that makes me really sick because they show very little respect for fellow (amateur)photographers, while everybody know that each one of those who submitted a photo, did their best.

A challenge is supposed to be fun, is supposed to be educative, is about learning from each other and helping each other to improve their skills.

What voters mostly forget (in my humble opinion) is realizing that many (maybe most?) of us are just amateurs in the photographic fields. That not everybody has a smashing camera, nor a smashing photo editing program and all that stuff.
And I realize I made that same mistake in my earlier voting, but I'm gonna change that. I'm gonna do it this way in future:

When I know how many entries there are, I will divide that number by the voting days and I'll know how many votes I have to make each day to get them all. I'll comment if I think I can say something useful or pleasing. My votes will ranche between 4 and 9 and only when a photo really sucks in many fields, I might go down to 3 (and tell them why) and I will never vote a 10 because I believe there's no such thing as a '100% perfection'.

I believe in people sharing the same hobby and having fun with it, even in competative challenges and I had hoped this was such a place, but reading some of the comments here...well, I just don't know anymore if my hopes were set too high.

And then I found a comment on my photo: I got a 2, but I could see his/her point of view as he/she explained why. Well, a 2 is a 2, that's very low, but you won't hear me yelling, because he/she was right. And I thought, maybe there's still hope that this is a community of friends after all.

Titia

Good for a suicide maybe, maybe not? Keep voting, there's good ones out there (even if mines not really one of them) ;o)
