Ironically, I remember there being a similar dose of such pedantic tosh with the 'indecision' challenge.

...and we wonder why so many people find it hard to summon the enthusiasm to enter challenges.

Yeah, the Indecision challenge was very low-scoring for the same reason (not that I'm complaning).

I don't think a shot that shows a choice between two things fails to illustrate a decision. If you have a choice between two things, one naturally has to DECIDE which one to choose. If the photographer has juxtaposed dichotomous subjects and conveyed the notion of choice between the two, then I think they've succeeded. [admin edit] I was thinking of something like that while trying to decide on an entry but photographing such a thing tastefully and originally is nearly impossible.

Good luck to everyone, my shot is getting hammered but hopefully some sensible people will start voting soon ;)

Alex.

I must say this. Opinionated, uninformed people make the most damaging 'decisions'. They who lack selfconfidence or have a tendancy not to be flexible and is unable to attempt, at least, to see the artistic value of an entry in the broad perspective, should perhaps seek deep within themselves and try to 'decide' their true motives. It is actually sad to have people in our mids that are so tight assed when it suits their little world of experience. Yip, colda, you have a point.

In another thread, Because I felt this was going to be a wild and woolie challenge, the day this challenge was posted I wrote:

Okay, I realize there are ways to do this, but with all the wonderful ideas presented in the suggestions forum, where do we come up with such lame ideas as 'Decisions'? Photograph something that happens inside your head. This should be real fun. NOT! I'm sorry, but this challenge is hurtin'!

Which was answered by ClubJuggle:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry you don't like this one. There are quite a few members who like abstract or conceptual challenge topics. We try to run a wide variety of challenges, and the reality is everyone will dislike some of them -- this one is yours.

-Terry

Every challenge topic we run was suggested by someone -- mostly registered users and members, but in some cases by Drew, Langdon or a member of Site Council (we're also users too, remember?).

Remember that DPC is over three years old -- some suggestions were made quite some time ago. The Decisions challenge is in the database with a Date Requested of 03/07/2004, so it's one of them.

-Terry

And then I replied....

Thanks Terry for the info. Thank you for your investigative work, and feed back, however, there's really no need on my part for a defense of the challenge idea. As you mentioned earlier, everyone dislikes some of the challenges. This one is mine. It is good to know, however that in a year and a half from now, some of the good ideas being presented now, will be up for review, and considered as challenges.

I actually got an idea. Maybe I'll dress up like a scarecrow, and cross my arms, while pointing in different directions...ohhhh...that would be "indecision". Sorry. I just can't seem to decide on this one. Have fun with it everyone. That's what it is all about. Enjoy and Good Luck.

This one has really been filled with a lot of contraversy, from definition to voting. Can't wait to see the Voting Results....!

Exactly why I stopped entering open challenges but I had a shot I thought would do great and entered it anyway. Lesson learned. I am going away for a while.

OK, not my highest score, but I'm really happy beacuse I got a "favorite" for the first time :-). Even if it bombs further, I'm still happy with my photo, and it seems that at least one other person too :-D

well i dont lack self confidence..i dont even know what that has to do with voting, but i'm not going to rate a photo high that IMO doesnt meet the challenge, after voting i realized that 3/4 of the entries see it the way i do, therefore, if your photo doesnt than sorry bout your luck.

I like this challenge.. I think it's really interesting actually. Some of the pictures show the decision being made and some don't, but the ones that don't clearly show the outcome almost force the viewer to think about it and make their own decision as to what they would choose. It still has to do with decision whether it shows the decision being made or shows that a decision has to be made. Just my little opinion. Now mine shows a clear decision and it's still dropping. At a 5.09 right now.

4.1xx

I guess my decision (may be more of a choice but that kinda means the same thing to me) isn't as blatantly clear as I thought it was Considering my first vote was a 2. :-( Such is life, probably will lay off the open challenges from now on... I can't handle the low scores. :-)

This challenge makes the whole Middle East situation seem perfectly clear.

My first thought on seeing this Challenge announced was "there are going to be some boring entires". I wasn't smart enough to stay away and almost withdrew a few times, which I should have done. Now looking at mine, while spot on, to meet the challenge is a bit dry AND now I realize that the decision had to be COMPLETELY "made" and I may have missed the mark. I feel like I'm stuck in the mud.

"I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN'T GET UP!"

I'll give this one a miss. Done...gone...goodbye.

I'm sitting at 4.9 and quite disgusted. I really liked my idea, although must admit its not technically perfect.

I was looking forward to scoring this challenge because I thought it was a topic that would not have any ducks or flowers. I was wrong. People will get their ducks in no matter what. I must admit I am growing tired of birds of all feathers and flowers and bees. I am scoring them pretty low even if they are beautiful and technically perfect.

Come on if there is a picture of a rock and the title says Should I throw it? Is this a Decision. Come on it is a picture of a rock. Same goes if the title is Rock. Neither has anything to do with a the challenge and scores low. And we all know there are many pictures of "rocks" in this challenge.

This is a visual challenge and I should not have to figure out what the photographer was thinking. It should be apparent to me just by looking at the submission.

I'm glad I skipped this one.

I have been in your shoes pawdrix and others. I know how it feels.
Usually about now I'm wishing for someone to shoot me and put me out of my misery. lol
I've found it helps during the long week to
1)pick up the camera and go shoot for myself. Fill three CF cards.
2)do not push the update button
3)clean a closet, organize the junk drawer but don't push that update button.
4)start planning for the next challenge and revenge!!!!

It was good to see that we got our "Duck" Picture in this challenge. What would we do without at least one "Duck" Picture. A couple of geese making decisions as well as other various birds. We really need a "Bird Challenge" so hopefully people can get the ducks and geese out fo their systems...!

Hmmm, perhaps this is where I missed the boat. Mine is definetly not a "made" decision. Cest la vie..... onto the next challenge. :-)

It's only a little challenge, although I must admit I was pretty pissed at first when I saw that my entry which took me a couple of hours to shoot was chilling at mid 5s and that people were giving it 1s and 2s.

Wow...that was harsh! For someone who castigates others for being opinionated and inflexible that was quite opinionated and inflexible!!!
I take it you entered an image that fits the 'broad perspective' then? Your own ass sounds more than a little tight, if you don't mind me saying.

I actually think there are quite good pics in this challenge... I gave 7*10's, 6*9's, 3*8's and 8*7's. And I too have my likes and dislikes but I will never penelize anyone because I have an 'opinion'... sure, focus on the facts, but clinging to 'opinions', well that is a little too much. Agree, some are obviously not Okay, but you know, most are... Even if I have to read the title to follow another persons creative mind and can see the possibility of the link. Even if it is a decision in the process of being made...

Do I care about score? Not as much as I enjoy my hobby or having great pics in my portfolio. Do I respect the opinonated, NO, not as I respect the ones with the ability to think, to rethink and to broaden their own paradigms. But then, comming back to my earlier point, for some to move out of their 'opinion' world may be painful. So maybe I should respect them too.

I'm with you on that one, Gibun. I'm quite proud of my decisions shot even if it is getting molested in voting (Votes: 62 Avg Vote: 5.4516) so there's no problem :)

5.4516 is not a molestation...it's a Ribbon.

I must admit to being one of those whose mouse hovered over the left had side of the scoring bar for this one when scoring: lots of pictures that relied entirely on the title. Very few that had a decision as their main focus (whether recently made, to be made, or in the process of being made). Rather, the main focus tended to be a person, animal, or object, doing something that would be open to a lot of interpretation.

I feel justified in scoring largely v low scores because there were a few pictures in there that definitely did portray a decision, and some of those were good photos. The rest did not meet the standard that I require for a good score.

I would still contemplate putting a few of the low scorers down as favourites: really good photos, just shoe-horned into a challenge that they were not suited to. Don't take it too personally!
