Is it just me or is the comment ratio decreasing as there are more submissions? My score is extermely pleasing so far this week, but it seems the number of comments is "relatively" low - 10 comments for 133 votes.

Anyone else who sees the same pattern?

I have almost twice as many comments so far this week (13) than I had all of last week (7). That ratio doesn't apply to me.

It does to me, though. I have a quite good score, one that would generally equate to 12 or 13 comments from 127 votes. But I have 4 comments only!

Agree. 142 votes/13 comments.
I'm greatful for the 13 I have recieved. I love to hear what folks say. I don't agree 100% of the time, but love to hear their ideas and thoughts.

I took a look at the comment ratio for past challenges, and everything seems to be relatively consistent when you're at the top. Most of the top-rated photos in the past few challenges recieved about 1 comment for every five votes.

When you're above average but not in the top quartile (i.e. 2nd quartile), the photos in the past challenges have recieved about 1 comment for every ten votes-- and this also seems relatively constant.

At a glance, it seems only when the photos are around the median or below median that the number of entries seems to start having a larger effect on the comment ratio.

Sometimes I think that comment-to-vote ratio actually may be a better predictor of final placement than your average score during the voting.

Not that there aren't exceptions... I took a photo a few challenges that scored quite well but got 26 comments and finished 7th. A few weeks before that, I had a photo that had more than twice as many comments (55), but finished 12th. Oh well... who can tell?

133 votes & 5 comments ... but my pic is pretty 'boring' so i figure that people are starting to comment, but they fall asleep ...

I'm at 144 & 5. A whopping 3.4% :) Or 1 out of every 28.8 votes nets me a comment :) Can't argue though - it's definitely better than not receiving any comments!

hmm....I was just thinking about this...I have only 3 comments(135 votes). But it is true that my pict was a last minute thing, and is not quite as exciting as most of the others. Score is proving that as well.

I have 166 votes and 20 comments. I agree that the higher your score the more comments you recieve. I left 155 comments this week but I must admit that most of those were the photos I ranked higher.

i agree with Doug, there some photos what i dont have any to say
09/25/2002 11:12:36 AM · #12
Allright, based on all that feedback, I am predicting, for all it's worth, that I will have a relatively lower comment ratio this week, for whatever rank I get. Nothing like a little fun speculation...

169 votes ... and 5 comments .... but then again it is only wednesday ... so bring on the comments :) and votes ... i'm not complaining though - thisi smy highest scoring one yet - thanks everyone!

160 votes 14 comments....what's weird is that 12 came within the first 24 hours, since then I only got two, and haven't gotten one for the past 24 hours. Odd.

Can someone comment on my photo, please...it's the one with the things, that looks like a picture, and has other stuff in it. :)

Frankly, I think it's the number of submissions that are driving the rates down.

My comment ratio outbound is about 85%, and writing 85% comments on 240 or so submissions is just a real time sucker. Consequently, I comment much more briefly lately, and I may cut down the number of comments altogether. I don't like this, really, because it means that information I have might never get to folks who need it, and conversely (possibly more importantly) information OTHER folks have might not get to me :)

I think it all depends on how the voters take to your picture. Last week I received 49 comments from 322 votes, it was also my highest placing, this week I have 11 comments from 160ish votes and my score is down aswell (although it's doin ok). If people really like a shot they tend to say more often then if they think a shot is just ok. If they think it's just ok they just click 4 or 5 and go on to the next one. Also I have noticed if they really hate a picture they will comment more. Average pictures bring average amount of votes.

I have 24 comments, all telling me the same thing... :(

I have made my first submission this week and (without sounding ungrateful) would rather the people who mark me with a lower score leave a comment than those who leave me higher scores, its easier to learn from critism than it is to learn from praise...

I agree. Though, as a frequent commentor, I can say that it's awful hard to be constructively critical without putting the photographer on the defensive. If I can't find any way to add a comment like "I like the idea of this photo," or "good composition," or something else positive in addition to my criticism, I will often refuse to comment. I know how poorly *I* take criticism, and I guess I just don't want people to take things as hard as I do.

I've only got 3 comments, mainly telling me exactly what I already thought was wrong with my picture :-) But then, with my score where it is I wouldn't expect more (I'm still on target to get more with my first submission than my wife did on hers though!)

I'm actually very bad at commenting, partly because with 250 entries I simply don't have the time and partly because I have a very hard time putting into words what I think is 'wrong' with a picture in a nice way.

Personally, I'd much prefer comments telling me what I should have done better than short comments saying "Nice pic" (although I like the warm fuzzy feeling you get from those too!). But I guess the worry is offending somebody who is less eager for critisism.

The trouble is, as mjcecil says, it's hard to phrase negative comments in a positive way (err, if you know what I mean!).

What are you doing here? You should be working? ;)

I used to comment on every single entry. I just don't have time to do that at the moment, though last week was unusual in that I only left 2 comments, having had a busy week and having been away all weekend.

But as entries go up it's very hard to get the time to vote and comment on many entries.

:(

And my score has dropped half a point already since I first looked at it on Monday morning :(

I hope all you guys complaining about comments are also leaving them for others.... and not contributing to the very same problem you're whining about.
10/01/2002 07:40:30 AM · #24
wierd, my scoring keeps going up (very unusual)...started at around 4.1 and it's now at around 5.1 (120 votes) and ONLY 3 comments.

I don't know if you read what I wrote on another thread, but I'm giving $5 (Canadian) to whoever gives me the 20th comment (not nice to buy votes, but I think I can get away with buying comments :-)

Hint- my photo is the one with a reflection on it ;)
